Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder, occurring predominantly in women. We studied by flow cytofluorimetry the T cell subsets in men and women with ITP and compared them with healthy sex-matched volunteers. In healthy controls, women were found to have higher proportions of T helper/inducer (Th/i) and lower T suppressor/cytotoxic (Ts/c) lymphocytes and consequently higher Th/i:Ts/c ratios than men. A 38-year-old man was admitted to our hospital because of exertional dyspnea in February, 1990. The patient had already been diagnosed as having autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) in February, 1982 and treated with prednisolone (PSL) until January, 1988. Dapsone is one of the second line treatments of immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Dapsone is cheap and has response rates comparable to other second line treatment options like azathioprine, danazol, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine, and vincristine. Hydroxyurea (HU) is frequently given as treatment for myelofibrosis (MF), but data on its efficacy and tolerability are scarce.
