There is evidence that sympathetic innervation induces decreases in accommodation or accommodation amplitude. If so, emotional stress that produces sympathetic activation should induce similar changes in accommodation. In two experiments, dark focus accommodation was assessed following deep relaxation and after subjects looked at gruesome slides. Results showed that stress exposure led to lower dark focus values than did relaxation. Further, the degree to which dark focus was affected depended on subjects' levels of perceived arousal, and on the degree of stressfulness represented by the slide

Eight 22-week-old broiler breeder replacements were presented from a flock experiencing a mild mortality problem. Approximately 2-3% of the birds were not getting onto the slats to eat or drink. The birds had been reared in dark-out houses under an experimental lighting schedule. Upon examination, several birds appeared blind or partially blind; others exhibited a photophobic response. The psychophysical threshold and the appearance of the visually evoked potential (VEP) were compared in the dark adapted state. Nineteen normal subjects and 11 persons with defective dark adaptation were studied. The VEP threshold was an average of 0.2 log units (standard deviation 0.2) above the subjective threshold in the normal group, and 0.4 log units above it in the night-blind subjects. PURPOSE: A settings-based approach to health promotion emphasizes everyday environments in shaping health. Prisons are, therefore, potentially important arenas for health promotion. However, the inherent restriction of prisoner agency presents a fundamental challenge in this regard. There is a gap in qualitative research on prisoners' perspectives on health-related topics and a need for greater understanding of health promotion within prisons. This study aims to explore male prisoners' experiences of a Norwegian low-security prison as a setting for health promotion.

This study examined the combined effect of thermocycles with either variable or constant photic conditions on melatonin production by pineal organs in vitro in the gecko, Christinus marmoratus. Diurnal profiles of the content of immunoreactive somatostatin (IRS) in the male and female rat pineal, Harderian gland and retina have been studied. Supplementary experiments have been performed to elucidate a possible effect of infradian cycles, namely estrous and seasonal cycles, and continuous dark on IRS concentration.
