Spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before and during the implementation of the Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan: a cross-sectional study from 2000 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) implemented the first strategic Multisectoral Cholera Elimination Plan (MCEP) in 2008-2012. Two subsequent MCEPs have since been implemented covering the periods 2013-2017 and 2018-2021. The current study aimed to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of cholera over the recent 22-year period to determine the impact of the MCEPs on cholera epidemics, establish lessons learned and provide an evidence-based foundation to improve the implementation of the next MCEP (2023-2027). METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, secondary weekly epidemiolo

GTransU-CAP: Automatic labeling for cyclic alternating patterns in sleep EEG using gated transformer-based U-Net framework.

Cyclic alternating pattern (CAP) sequences are composed of cycles of alternate activation phases (A-phases) and background phases. CAP A-phases can be further divided into three subtypes, which act as important bio-markers of sleep instability and are also associated with identifiable sleep pathologies. Thus, its accurate detection and identification is of great clinical interest and significance. To release the burden of sleep experts who manually perform this labeling task, several automatic detectors have been proposed, yet the characteristics of CAP have not been fully exploited to achieve

Social Disparities in Thoracic Surgery Database Research: Implications and Impact.

A complex relationship exists between health care disparities and large databases among the thoracic surgical patient population. Using the example of thoracic malignancies, the ability of investigations leveraging large databases and novel analytical approaches to highlight disparate access to care and discordant outcomes following treatment is illustrated. Large, widely used databases may not be representative of the thoracic surgical patient population as a whole, and caution must be used when interpreting and generalizing results gleaned from such database analyses. Ensuring appropriate re

Suicide versus homicide firearm injury patterns on trauma systems in a study of the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB).

Firearm related mortality in the USA surpassed all other developed countries. This study hypothesizes that injury patterns, weapon type, and mortality differ between suicide groups as opposed to homicide. The American College of Surgeons National Trauma Database was queried from January 2017 to December 2019. All firearm related injuries were included, and weapon type was abstracted. Differences between homicide and suicide groups by sex, age, race, and injury severity were compared using a Mann-Whitney test for numerical data and Fisher's exact test for categorical data. The association betwe

Critical Care Database Comprising Patients With Infection.

Patients treated in the intensive care unit (ICU) are closely monitored and receive intensive treatment. Such aggressive monitoring and treatment will generate high-granularity data from both electronic healthcare records and nursing charts. These data not only provide infrastructure for daily clinical practice but also can help to inform clinical studies. It is technically challenging to integrate and cleanse medical data from a variety of sources. Although there are several open-access critical care databases from western countries, there is a lack of this kind of database for Chinese adult

A Critical Overview of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses of Acupuncture for Female Stress Urinary Incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: As a urinary dysfunction disorder, stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is more common in women than in men. Acupuncture, a traditional minimally invasive technique, has potential efficacy in the treatment of SUI. The purpose of this overview is to critically assess the available evidence on acupuncture for the treatment of SUI in women. METHODS: Two researchers searched seven databases for systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on acupuncture for SUI. Two researchers assessed the included SRs/MAs using the Assessment of Multiple Systemati

Research strategies in treatment of hypertension: value of retrospective real-life data.

This review will discuss the limitations of data collected by RCTs in relation to their applicability to daily life clinical management. It will then argue that these limitations are only partially overcome by modifications of RCT design and conduction (e.g. 'pragmatic trials') while being substantially attenuated by real-life-derived research, which can fill many gaps left by trial-collected evidence and have thus an important complementary value. The focus will be on the real-life research approach based on the retrospective analysis of the now widely available healthcare utilization databas

High-Throughput Measurement and Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Collision Cross Sections for Drugs and Drug Metabolites.

Drug metabolite identification is a bottleneck of drug metabolism studies due to the need for time-consuming chromatographic separation and structural confirmation. Ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS), on the other hand, separates analytes on a rapid (millisecond) time scale and enables the measurement of collision cross section (CCS), a unique physical property related to an ion's gas-phase size and shape, which can be used as an additional parameter for identification of unknowns. A current limitation to the application of IM-MS to the identification of drug metabolites is the lack of ref
