An abattoir survey was performed in the French Melanesian archipelago of New Caledonia to determine the prevalence of paramphistomes in cattle and deer and to generate material for molecular typing at species and subspecies level. Tephra was considered chemically innoxious based on water leachates, surface water fluoride levels were determined to be safe, and livestock losses were attributable to inanition and excessive tooth wear. Copper (Cu) deficiency was diagnosed in a Norwegian red deer (Cervus elaphus) herd subsequent to deaths due to emaciation in late autumn 1999. The animals had free access to salt licks containing 3000 mg Cu/kg. Multiple bilateral fractures of the lumbar transverse processes were radiographically identified postmortem in a recently captured roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). These fractures were probably caused by an avulsion of the psoas major occurring during introduction into the transport box. The deer probably died from shock caused by the fractures, muscle damage, and subsequent hemorrhage. Although easily overlooked, fractured lumbar transverse processes may indicate inadequate postcapture management practices.

Pyriforms and ring forms of Babesia odocoilei were detected in thin blood smears obtained from a white-tailed deer killed by a hunter in Anderson County, Texas. Erythrocytes from the deer were cultured and the parasites maintained through 8 serial subcultures during 1 mo. The parasite was successfully established in culture using Medium 199 supplemented with either 20% deer serum or 40% normal adult bovine serum. The highest parasitemia observed was 30% and more than 4 parasites per erythrocyte were often observed. Cultured B. odocoilei remained infective for a susceptible white-tailed deer.
