[Electroencephalograms (EEG) in 250 patients with epilepsy in a cysticercosis endemic area in Burundi].

OBJECTIVES: This work aimed at describing EEG abnormalities in epileptic patients living in areas endemic for cysticercosis, underlining the electroclinical correlations and discussing the interest of EEG examination in this context. METHODS: During a case-control study, 250 EEGs from patients with epilepsy were recorded with a portable system. Types of seizures were assessed clinically and from information obtained through a standardised questionnaire, and along with EEG were related to the results of cysticercosis serological tests. RESULTS: Among the 249 EEGs, 48% were normal, 5.2% had ep

18FDG-PET in epilepsies of infantile onset with pharmacoresistant generalised tonic-clonic seizures.

AIMS: To investigate the pathophysiology of pharmacoresistant epilepsies with cryptogenic generalised tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) from infa … ataxia. Temporomesial hypometabolism correlated to the occurrence of obtunded states and prominent delta rhythms in the EEG. Central and parietal changes were associated with the occurrence of myoclonic seizures and spike-wave discharges. CONCLUSIONS: 18FDG-PET in many of these children with cryptogenic generalised epilepsies showed multifocal hypometabolic …

Acute cortisol administration increases sleep depth and growth hormone release in patients with major depression.

Acute administration of cortisol increases non-rapid-eye movement (non-REM) sleep, suppresses rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep and stimulates growth hormone (GH) release in healthy subjects. This study investigates whether cortisol has similar endocrine and electrophysiological effects in patients with depression who typically show a pathological overactivity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system. Fifteen depressed inpatients underwent the combined dexamethasone/corticotropin-releasing hormone test followed by three consecutive sleep EEG recordings in which the patients received pla

Effects of afternoon "siesta" naps on sleep, alertness, performance, and circadian rhythms in the elderly.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of a 90-minute afternoon nap regimen on nocturnal sleep, circadian rhythms, and evening alertness and performance levels in the healthy elderly. DESIGN AND SETTING: Nine healthy elderly subjects (4m, 5f, age range 74y-87y) each experienced both nap and no-nap conditions in two studies each lasting 17 days (14 at home, 3 in the laboratory). In the nap condition a 90-minute nap was enforced between 13:30 and 15:00 every day, in the no-nap condition daytime napping was prohibited, and activity encouraged in the 13:30-15:00 interval. The order of the two

Ketamine-induced re-organisation of neural oscillations across health, MDD, and TRD: A systematic review of magnetoencephalography insights.

Sub-anesthetic ketamine (KT) has become a promising rapid-acting antidepressant candidate, yet its mechanisms have not been comprehensively defined. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) provides millisecond recordings of cortical rhythms, exposing the rapid glutamatergic dynamics underlying ketamine's action. We synthesized evidence on KT-induced oscillatory and connectivity changes in healthy volunteers (HVs), major depressive disorder (MDD) and treatment-resistant depression (TRD), relating neural signatures to symptomatic relief. Following PRISMA and a PROSPERO-registered protocol (CRD42024609670),

[Clinical aspects of thalassemia (or microcythemia)].

The thalassaemias are genetic syndromes brought about by a low or nil synthesis of one or more of the main globinic chains and by consequent imbalance of the normal ratio between alpha and non-alpha chains. Three basic pictures can be distinguished: (1) microcythemia or thalassaemia minima, the expression of heterozygosis for one microcythemic gene, which includes beta, delta beta and alpha microcythemias. Subjects are healthy but very often pale and asthenic, (2) intermediate thalassaemia, very similar to thalassaemia major, though a less severe disease. It is the expression of the presence o

Slow-wave-modulated high-frequency oscillations reveal early network abnormalities in pre-pathological 5XFAD mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive disruption of large-scale neural networks, leading to abnormal brain oscillatory activity, yet sensitive electrophysiological markers of the earliest disease stages remain limited. Here, we investigated intracranial EEG (iEEG) biomarkers of early network dysfunction in the 5XFAD mouse model of AD, with a particular focus on the pre-plaque stage. iEEG recordings were obtained from 5XFAD and wild-type mice at 1 month (young), 3-4 months (adult), and 10-12 months (old). Spectral power distribution, epileptiform activity, and phase-amplitude

The effects of neurofeedback training on behavior and brain functional networks in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with an unclear pathogenesis to date. Neurofeedback (NFB) had shown therapeutic effects in patients with ASD. In this study,we analyzed the brain functional networks of children with ASD and investigated the impact of NFB targeting the beta rhythm training on these networks. The Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Social Response Scale (SRS) were employed to evaluate the effects of NFB training on the behavioral abilities of children with ASD. We compared the differences in static and dynamic brain functional networks between ASD

Counterpointing the functional role of the forebrain and of the brainstem in the control of the sleep-waking system.

This paper reviews the lifetime contributions of the author to the field of sleep-wakefulness (S-W), reinterprets results of the early studies, and suggests new conclusions and perspectives. Long-term cats with mesencephalic transection show behavioral/polygraphic rapid eye movement sleep (REMS), including the typical oculo-pupillary behavior, even when the section is performed in kittens prior to S-W maturation. REMS can be induced as a reflex. Typical non-rapid eye movement S (NREMS) is absent and full W/arousal is present only after a precollicular section. The isolated forebrain (IF) rostr

Do ECG abnormalities, degree of sternal displacement or troponin level influence outcomes following sternal fracture?

BACKGROUND: Sternal fractures are critical indicators of significant blunt chest trauma, with reported mortality rates ranging from 4.3% to 32%. While associations between sternal fractures and mortality have been noted, the specific factors influencing outcomes remain incompletely understood. OBJECTIVE: To analyze potential factors influencing clinical outcomes in patients with sternal fractures, specifically examining the relationship between mortality risk and degree of sternal displacement, troponin levels, and ECG changes. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed data obtained

Opioid-induced depression in the lamprey respiratory network.

The role of opioid receptors in modulating respiratory activity was investigated in in vitro brainstem preparations of adult lampreys by bath application of agonists and antagonists. The vagal motor output was used to monitor respiratory activity. Neuronal recordings were also performed to characterize the rostrolateral trigeminal region that has been suggested to be critical for respiratory rhythmogenesis. Microinjections of the micro-opioid receptor agonist [d-Ala(2), N-Me-Phe(4), Gly(5)-ol]-enkephalin (DAMGO) were also made into this region and at different locations within the brainstem. B

[A concise history of the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome].

In a paper entitled Bundle-branch block with short P-R interval in healthy young people prone to paroxysmal tachycardia (Am Heart J 1930; 5: 685-704), Dr. Louis Wolff (1898-1972), Sir John Parkinson (1885-1976) and Paul Dudley White (1886-1973) described an intricate syndrome. Prior case reports had already pointed out the essentials of this entity, which has borne the eponym (WPW syndrome) since the publication by Levine and Beeson (Am Heart J 1941; 22: 401-409). It was long thought that the first patient with a short PR interval, delta-wave-induced widening of the QRS complex and paroxysmal

Diagnostic Reliability of Headset-Type Continuous Video EEG Monitoring for Detection of ICU Patterns and NCSE in Patients with Altered Mental Status with Unknown Etiology.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Simplified continuous electroencephalogram (cEEG) monitoring has shown improvement in detecting seizures; however, it is insufficient in detecting abnormal EEG patterns, such as periodic discharges (PDs), rhythmic delta activity (RDA), spikes and waves (SW), and continuous slow wave (CS), as well as nonconvulsive status epilepticus (NCSE). Headset-type continuous video EEG monitoring (HS-cv EEG monitoring; AE-120A EEG Headset™, Nihon Kohden, Tokyo, Japan) is a recently developed easy-to-use technology with eight channels. However, its ability to detect abnormal EEG patter

EEG extreme delta brush: An ictal pattern in patients with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

INTRODUCTION: The anti-NMDA receptor (NMDAr) encephalitis-associated syndrome includes neuropsychiatric symptoms, impaired consciousness, seizures, autonomic instability, and hypoventilation. The electroencephalographic (EEG) activity throughout the course of the disease has still not been well documented. We reviewed electroclinical data of patients with NMDAr encephalitis to characterize their EEG and its clinical correlation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively identified 16 patients with NMDAr encephalitis from 8 Spanish medical centers, 15 of whom underwent video-EEG in the acute ph

The role of brain perfusion SPECT in Moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a cerebrovascular disorder involving stenosis of brain vessels. Brain perfusion SPECT in MMD demonstrates impaired perfusion in ischemic areas. We present a 6-year-old boy with MMD. The patient had numbness on the right arm and simultaneous electroencephalography changes while studying arms up on the table. To differentiate seizure and ischemic symptoms, brain perfusion SPECT studies were obtained when the patient was asymptomatic (SPECT-A) and during the symptoms-EEG changes (SPECT-B). SPECT-A showed perfusion defect on the right frontal cortex, hypoperfusion on the

Regional MeCP2 expression levels in the female MeCP2-deficient mouse brain correlate with specific behavioral impairments.

Using female MeCP2-deficient mice as a model, we tested whether MeCP2 expression levels would parallel one another in different regions of the brain and spinal cord, and/or whether the levels of MeCP2 protein in these specific neural regions would correlate with the degree of behavioral impairment seen in individual subjects. Our results show that MeCP2 protein levels are not uniform across different regions of the mosaic brain, and that the relative MeCP2 levels in one region did not necessarily predict its expression levels in other regions of the same mouse. Correlational analysis between r

NREM sleep EEG activity and procedural memory: A comparison between young neurotypical and autistic adults without sleep complaints.

UNLABELLED: Delta EEG activity (0.75-3.75 Hz) during non-Rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep reflects the thalamo-cortical system contribution to memory consolidation. The functional integrity of this system is thought to be compromised in the Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This lead us to investigate the topography of NREM sleep Delta EEG activity in young adults with ASD and typically-developed individuals (TYP). The relationship between Delta EEG activity and sensory-motor procedural information was also examined using a rotary pursuit task. Two dependent variables were computed: a learning in

Effects of estrogen and progesterone on the expression of connexin-36 mRNA in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of female rats.

To determine the effects of ovarian steroid hormones on gap junction communication in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), we examined the effects of estrogen and/or progesterone on the expression of connexin-36 mRNA in the SCN and cerebral cortex (CX) of female rats. Ovariectomized adult rats were injected with 20 microg 17beta-Estradiol or sesame oil 48 h before sacrifice and further injected with 1.5 mg progesterone or sesame oil 24 h before sacrifice. Northern blot revealed that estrogen significantly increased the expression of connexin-36 mRNA in the SCN and this increase was inhibited by

Modulation of EEG Background Rhythms in Sturge-Weber Syndrome: Impact of Surgical Timing on the Unaffected Hemisphere.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy surgery improves seizure outcomes in Sturge-Weber syndrome (SWS), yet the electrophysiological patterns of postoperative recovery remain poorly characterized. Previous studies suggest that early intervention may yield distinct clinical trajectories, but the associated changes in EEG background activity have not been systematically investigated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether age of surgery influences the postoperative modulation of EEG background rhythms in children with unilateral SWS, and to evaluate the utility of preoperative EEG asymmetry for lateralizing the epil
