Piezo Channels in Dentistry: Decoding the Functional Effects of Forces.

The oral system is a highly complex mechanosensory structure that continuously adapts to changes in mechanical stimuli, exerting mechanical forces on cells and tissues. Understanding how these forces are converted into biochemical signals and how they mediate gene expression and cellular activities has been a significant focus in dentistry. Piezo channels, including Piezo1 and Piezo2, are mechanically activated cation channels characterized by an extracellular "cap" domain and 3 peripheral mechanosensitive blades. Recent research has demonstrated that mechanical forces applied to tissues can i…

Post-procedural Pain in Dentistry, as related to Dental Specialties.

Postprocedural pain (PPP) is a common yet complex sequalae of dental procedures, often presenting challenges in diagnosis and management. While many dental procedures inherently involve some degree of discomfort such as local anesthesia administration or scaling and root planing-the primary goal remains to relieve pain and prevent disease progression. Effective PPP management requires a multifactorial approach, taking into account the patient's chief complaint, age, gender, medical and psychosocial background, and drug compatibility. The use of preemptive and multimodal analgesia is of utmost

Applications of artificial intelligence in restorative dentistry: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI) applications in restorative dentistry have remarkably increased in the past 5 years. This review outlines the applications, promises, and limitations of AI in the most performed procedures in restorative dentistry. METHOD AND MATERIALS: An electronic search was performed in four databases: MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus. The search included articles published in English language without date restriction. Two independent reviewers assessed the eligibility of the studies and performed data extraction. Any discrepancy was resolved by th…

Occlusion and Temporomandibular Disorders: A Long-Standing Controversy in Dentistry.

The relationship between temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and occlusion remains controversial. Some authors believe that occlusion is the primary factor in the onset of TMD symptoms, whereas others feel that occlusion has no role in this at all. The majority of reasoning behind causation is based upon anecdotal rather than scientific evidence. Existing evidence in the literature supports the absence of a disease-specific association. This article describes this controversy and provides the reader with findings from contemporary literature.

[Sterilization in dentistry. Limitations of elastic materials: a case presentation].

In everyday dental practice, sterility is essential. Sterilizing different materials can require different methods. In the case of heat sensitive and elastic materials, most common techniques are not suitable because they need to be treated on lower temperature, not to lose their physical properties. For instance, if rubber dam is divested of elasticity, it is useless in restorative dentistry thereafter. Sterilizing rubber dam sheets is not a frequent process, but in certain cases it can be necessary. In such a situation, dentists have to choose between rare and hard-to-reach options. In our r…

Ultrasound in Dentistry: Toward a Future of Radiation-Free Imaging.

Ultrasonography (US) is a noninvasive, nonionizing, inexpensive, and painless imaging tool proven to be a valuable diagnostic tool in soft tissue assessment that also shows promise for hard tissue evaluation in dentistry. US has been investigated for its capability to identify carious lesions, tooth fractures or cracks, periodontal bony defects, maxillofacial fractures, and more. It has been used as a diagnostic aid in temporomandibular disorders, implant dentistry, and to measure muscle and soft tissue thickness. Unfortunately, the use of US in dentistry is still in its infancy; however, rele…

The course and distribution of the buccal nerve: clinical relevance in dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The buccal branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve is commonly anaesthetized for dental procedures and may be damaged during surgery. Descriptions of the distribution of the buccal nerve (BN) in anatomical texts are generally lacking in detail and do not provide information about the extent of its variation between individuals. There are also commonly-held clinical beliefs about the BN that lack support from anatomical dissections. METHODS: Detailed dissections of the course and distribution of the BN were performed in a sample of 12 hemi-heads from 11 edentulous

Feasibility Study for a Satellite Program of an Established School of Dentistry.

UNLABELLED: Creative thinking is required to solve the many challenges the oral health care delivery system faces in meeting the needs of the U.S. POPULATION: Access to oral health care services varies widely across the country based on a host of factors including individual patient characteristics, demographic variables, and distribution of professionals by locale. There is also significant variability of need, so that many new solutions have been proposed to meet the needs of specific areas. In late 2012, the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry embarked on a feasibility s…

Current status of the influence of osteoporosis on periodontology and implant dentistry.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes recent evidence on the impact of osteoporosis on periodontonlogy and implant dentistry, prevalence of diseases, pathophysiology and treatment outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients with osteoporosis should be advised about the importance of returning for periodical periodontal maintenance as inadequate oral care may lead to a faster development of periodontitis. There is no definitive information on the development of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with dental implant therapy. Patients presenting severe periodontitis, undergoi…

The University of Saskatchewan's Aboriginal Equity Access Program in dentistry.

Persons of Aboriginal ancestry are underrepresented in the dental profession in North America. In Canada, the University of Saskatchewan College of Dentistry began a proactive program to recruit, retain, and graduate more Aboriginal students in 1996. This program, entitled the Aboriginal Equity Access Program, has seen the inclusion of twenty-two Aboriginal students in the predoctoral program. This article describes the program and reports on the success of the students enrolled via this route. The primary conclusion is that selection of Aboriginal dental students with lower entry scores--who …
