The primary dental care clinician is in a prime position to identify deviations from normal dental development. Disturbances can affect any new erupting tooth. The objective of this narrative review is to describe several situations in which eruption disturbances can arise during the mixed dentition. It will provide an overview of the orthodontic considerations of these disturbances in addition to key summary points on interceptive management, based on the best available evidence.

Supernumerary teeth are commonly reported in patients with cleft lip and palate. The presence of a complete duplicate quadrant of teeth, however, is very rare. A patient with orofacial-digital syndrome type IV (Mohr-Majewski) presented with a duplication of the mandibular primary dentition in the right quadrant. Presence of decay and poor oral hygiene dictated intervention and removal of the supernumery teeth. A case report is presented.

The pleiotropic effects of mutations resulting in abnormal dentition were analyzed in Kerry Blue Terrier. A decrease in litter size was demonstrated for dogs with dentition anomalies. The mean litter size was 5.72 puppies when both parents had normal dentition and 3.64 puppies when the parents had hypodontia. Analysis showed that the decrease in litter size cannot be fully explained by the effect of inbreeding and is most probably associated with the pleiotropic effect of the genes controlling teeth development on the embryonic viability.

Dental enamel hypoplasias are used to examine metabolic disruption experienced during early childhood by ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) inhabitants of southwestern Colorado.
