Loss of natural dentition: multi-level effects among a geriatric population.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the impact of edentulousness on residual ridge volume, denture stomatitis (DS), as well as oral health behaviours among geriatric denture-wearers. BACKGROUND: Residual ridge resorption (RRR) is the primary intraoral complication of complete edentulism, but individual variation among geriatric patients has been observed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data collection relied upon a 10-year retrospective chart review of all complete denture-wearing geriatric patients presenting at the Removable Prosthodontics Clinic, Dental School of Athens, between 1993 and 2002. Analyses relied

A prospective clinical study on titanium implants in the zygomatic arch for prosthetic rehabilitation of the atrophic edentulous maxilla with a follow-up of 6 months to 5 years.

BACKGROUND: Prosthetic rehabilitation with implant-supported prostheses in the atrophic edentulous maxilla often requires a bone augmentation procedure to enable implant placement and integration. However, a rigid anchorage can also be achieved by using so-called zygomatic implants placed in the zygomatic arch in combination with regular implants placed in residual bone. PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to report on the clinical outcome of using zygomatic and regular implants for prosthetic rehabilitation of the severely atrophic edentulous maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-nine

Team approach in treatment of extensive maxillofacial defects - five case report serie.

Long-lasting functional and esthetic rehabilitation and good health-related quality of life of patients with maxillofacial defects is based on effective interdisciplinary cooperation especially of surgeons, dentists and technicians. Extensive defects occur after the first phase of the oncologic surgery and immediately after injuries. Subsequent plastic surgery is the initial step of functional reconstruction and creates a base for future fabrication of post-operative dentures and implant-born epitheses. Five clinical reports demonstrate complex rehabilitation of typical maxillofacial defects s

Retrospective revelations: twenty orthodontically treated individuals with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

AIM: Twenty patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, orthodontically treated from the full primary or early transitional dentition stages until retention and dismissal, were recalled later in adult life to evaluate the status of their occlusion and facial appearance. METHODS: Cephalometric radiographs, photographs, and casts were attained as final records. In several instances, final records were obtained by orthodontic colleagues at the patient's current residence. Evaluation of the longitudinal records provided retrospective insight pertinent to the growth and positional relationships

A comparison of labial and crestal incisions for the 1-stage placement of IMZ implants: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the crestal incision with the labial flap design when inserting a 2-stage implant system in a nonsubmerged manner. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten consecutive edentulous patients with a severely resorbed mandible (Cawood Class V to VI) that resulted in reduced stability and insufficient retention of the lower denture were included. In all patients, 2 IMZ implants were inserted in a 1-stage procedure in the mandibular canine regions as part of an implant overdenture treatment. In 5 patients, the labial flap approach was used, and a crestal incision appro

Cleidocranial dysplasia with complex oral manifestations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare inherited skeletal disorder characterized by distinctive skeletal and dental abnormalities, often leading to delayed or missed diagnosis. Dental findings are frequently the most prominent clinical features and may play a key role in identifying the condition. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl presented with missing permanent teeth, impaired mastication and esthetic concerns. The patient had previously been diagnosed with growth delay despite normal endocrine evaluation, including growth hormone stimulation testing. The diagnosis of CCD w

Reconstruction of an Extensive Midfacial Defect Using Additive Manufacturing Techniques.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors are extremely rare tumors arising in peripheral nerves. Only 17 cases involving the trigeminal nerve have ever been reported. These tumors have a very poor prognosis and very high rates of recurrence and metastases. Their recommended treatment involves complete tumor resection followed by radiation. This can be problematic in the head and neck region. We present a clinical case involving a 33-year-old female patient presenting with a slow-growing, exophytic mass of the anterior maxilla. Incisional biopsy and subsequent histological examination revealed

Failure of osseointegrated dental implants after diphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis: a case report.

Late loss of initially integrated endosseous implants has generally been attributed to implant overload often the result of inappropriate prosthesis design. Implant placement is rarely contraindicated by preexisting systemic diseases, and no instances of medication-induced implant failure have been reported in the literature. This paper reports a case in which a patient lost five endosseous implants that had successfully osseointegrated and had been restored with a lower hybrid prosthesis approximately 6 months after diphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis was started.

Fixed rehabilitation of severely atrophic jaws using immediately loaded basal disk implants after in situ bone activation.

Rehabilitation of severely atrophic jaws is facilitated when basal disk implants are used after activation of the future bony implant bed with a purpose-designed instrument (Osteotensor) 45 to 90 days before implant surgery. Fabrication of a highly rigid, screw-secured fixed prosthesis that acts as an external orthopedic fixator permits immediate functional loading. This protocol also represents a second chance for patients who have experienced complete implant loss and/or bone graft failure.

Quality of life, patient preferences, and implant survival and success of tapered implant-retained mandibular overdentures as a function of the attachment system.

PURPOSE: A novel attachment system for implant-retained overdentures (IRODs) with novel material combinations for improved mechanical resilience and prosthodontic success (Novaloc) has been recently introduced as an alternative to an existing system (Locator). This study investigated whether differences between the Novaloc and Locator attachment systems translate into differences in implant survival, implant success, and patient-centered outcomes when applied in a real-world in-practice comparative setting in patients restored with mandibular IRODs supported by 2 interforaminal implants (2-IRO
