Co-morbid anxiety disorders predict early relapse after inpatient alcohol treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Alcohol dependence and anxiety disorders often co-occur. Yet, the effect of co-morbid anxiety disorders on the alcohol relapse-risk after treatment is under debate. This study investigated the effect of co-morbid anxiety disorders on relapse rates in alcohol dependence. We hypothesized that co-morbid anxiety disorders would be particularly predictive for early relapse, but not late relapse. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In a prospective design, male alcohol dependent patients (n=189) were recruited from an inpatient detoxification clinic. Psychiatric diagnoses and personality traits wer

The Relationship between the Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Gene Polymorphism (Val66Met) and Substance Use Disorder and Relapse.

Substance addiction is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by a recurring desire to continue using a substance despite harmful consequences. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is a protein that plays a role in the activity-dependent remodeling of neural function in adult nervous systems. This study analyzed the association of the rs6265 polymorphism of the BDNF gene in a group of patients addicted to psychoactive substances who were participating in addiction treatment for the first time, in a group of post-relapse psychoactive substance abusers and in a control group. The study al

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder in patients with chronic idiopathic facial pain.

34 patients with chronic idiopathic orofacial pain were assessed by a structured clinical interview for diagnosis of mental disorders according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R). Five (15%) had a history of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which coincided with the pain onset. The majority of these PTSD sufferers also had a personality disorder. The implications of these findings in the diagnosis and management of post-traumatic chronic TMJ pain syndromes is discussed.

Diversities of behavioral traits and neuropsychological function in different substance addiction.

OBJECTIVE: There are various temperaments and personality characters that modulate the development of substance addiction. The pharmacological properties of substances would alter the homeostasis of brain function and influence the neuropsychological performance through different neurotransmissions which then facilitate diverse emotional and behavioral responses. Our goal is to assess the interaction between personality characteristics, neuropsychological performances and Stroop interference in alcoholics, heroin and amphetamine dependent persons. METHODS: Subjects with alcohol (N=95), heroin

Self-medication among addicts with primary psychiatric disorders.

Thirty-two dually diagnosed inpatients described drug-induced changes in their psychiatric symptoms. All heroin addicts and most alcoholics reported drug-induced improvement of their primary psychiatric symptoms; all cocaine addicts reported symptom worsening. These findings suggest that chronic cocaine abuse may not necessarily be related to attempts at self-medication of psychiatric symptoms.

Electrophysiological responses to affective stimuli in Southwest California Indians: relationship to alcohol dependence.

OBJECTIVE: Native Americans have some of the highest rates of alcohol abuse and dependence, yet potential risk factors associated with the problem drinking seen in some tribes remain relatively unknown. The present investigation evaluated associations between the P350 and P450 components of the event-related potential (ERP) elicited by affective stimuli and potential vulnerability factors associated with risk of alcohol dependence in Southwest California (SWC) Indian adults. METHOD: Data from 517 Native American SWC Indian adults between the ages of 18 and 70 were used in the analyses. ERPs w

The association between gambling pathology and personality disorders.

Research supports increased risk of problem gambling (PG) and pathological gambling disorder (PGD) among individuals with substance abuse/dependence and psychiatric disorders, but studies considering personality disorder comorbidity have not adjusted for confounding relationships with other Axis I disorders. Using targeted advertising, we enrolled 153 gamblers (55% female; 32% minority; Mean age=47; SD=18.2) in a clinical validation study of the newly developed computerized gambling assessment module (C-GAM). For these analyses, we classified gamblers into three groups based on their endorseme

Mental Health and Personality Disorders: Personality Disorders.

Personality disorders describe enduring, pervasive, pathologic patterns of behavior and inner experiences that deviate from a patient's culture. Personality disorders are divided into three clusters depending on core features. Diagnosis of a personality disorder is generally made based on criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, although other diagnostic modalities exist. The most common disorders in primary care settings include obsessive-compulsive personality, narcissistic personality, and borderline personality disorders. Obsessive-compulsive personality dis

Nicotine dependence and psychiatric and substance use disorder comorbidities among American Indians/Alaska Natives: findings from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

BACKGROUND: American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) have high rates of tobacco use compared to the general population. AI/ANs also have elevated rates of psychiatric and substance use disorders associated with nicotine dependence. However, very few studies have examined the comorbidity between nicotine dependence and psychiatric and substance use disorders within this population. METHODS: This study analyzes the comorbidity of lifetime nicotine dependence with both current and lifetime psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders in a nationally representative sample of 701 AI/AN wo

Are personality traits familial risk factors for substance use disorders? Results of a controlled family study.

OBJECTIVE: The well-documented association between maladaptive personality traits and substance use disorders has given rise to diverse explanatory models. In this investigation the authors examined one such explanation, that certain personality traits are familial risk factors for the development of substance abuse or dependence. METHOD: Data were collected from a controlled family study using direct diagnostic interviews. The Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire was used to assess the personality traits of 325 probands, 205 of whom had diagnoses of substance abuse or dependence, and 2

[Drop-out from out-patient treatment for alcohol dependence: a two-year prospective study].

INTRODUCTION: Treatment compliance in alcohol-dependent patients seems closely related to abstinence rates, so it could be an outcome measure. The aim of our study was to identify which sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of alcohol-dependent patients are associated to high drop-out rates. METHOD: 165 alcohol-dependent out-patients were assessed by means of a structured questionnaire and followed for two years. RESULTS: It was shown a predictive value for personal history of suicidal intents or affective and anxiety disorders, comorbidity with affective and personality disorders, f

Narrow and broad definition of mixed-handedness in male psychiatric patients.

Differences in assessment and classification procedures of many mixed-handedness studies have made comparison of findings difficult. In the present study, "narrow" and "broad" definitions of mixed-handedness were investigated using the Annett Handedness Questionnaire in patients with schizophrenia (n=68), panic disorder (n=62), borderline personality disorder (n=35), heroin addiction (n=54), and mental retardation (n=33) in comparison with 944 controls. According to the "narrow" definition of mixed-handedness, an excess of mixed-handedness was observed in patients with borderline personality d

Dizziness and perceptual style.

This study tested the hypothesis that patients suffering from non-organic ('psychogenic') dizziness would score higher on Witkins' frame dependence test than a group of dizzy patients with peripheral organic damage. A computerized version of the portable rod and frame test was administered to a group of 10 chronic ENT patients with peripheral vestibular disease, 10 ENT patients with no detectable organic problems and 10 non-dizzy controls. Contrary to the hypothesis, the psychogenic group had less frame-dependent error than the peripheral group and less (though not significantly so) than the n

Physiological and psychological correlates of motion sickness.

Motion sickness (MS)has been inconclusively associated with personality and physical vestibular functioning in both males and females. The present work consisted of six tests: test of field dependency; pure balance test; motion sickness questionnaire; body steadiness test; primary suggestibility test; resistance to disturbance test. In addition the EPI was completed by a proportion of subjects. Male and female data for the 15 male and 15 female subjects in an age range 20 to 30 years, obtained from within Bedford College, University of London, were factor analysed separately. The results show

Developmental comorbidity in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

With the present review, we intend to highlight the importance of considering the age- and development-dependent occurrence of comorbidity in ADHD and to outline distinct trajectories of symptom progression with possible impact on course and outcome of ADHD. The review will focus on introducing the concepts of "developmental epidemiology" and "developmental comorbidity". Psychiatric and non-psychiatric age-dependent comorbidity can be seen in the majority of children, adolescents and adults with ADHD, resulting in a severe impairment of everyday life with considerable functional and psychosoci
