[Allergic contact dermatitis due to prednicarbate].

Two female patients developed an allergic contact dermatitis after using Dermatop cream and -ointment for several weeks. Patch tests were positive with the reagent prednicarbate itself. No cross reactions to other glucocorticosteroids were observed. Type-IV-sensitization to glucocorticosteroids should be considered if chronic dermatitis does not improve, or even becomes worse, in spite of adequate therapy. With regard to possible cross reactions or multiple sensitization, epicutaneous tests with other glucocorticosteroids are necessary.

Allergic contact dermatitis from glutaraldehyde exposure.

A hospital maintenance employee developed an airborne contact dermatitis when cleaning respiratory therapy equipment. Patch-testing determined that she is allergic to glutaraldehyde, an ingredient in a popular commercial germicidal product. The increasing concern over acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and other infectious diseases has resulted in more intensive cleaning, sterilizing, and disposal procedures in health care facilities. This, in turn, may lead to an increased risk of contact dermatitis among health care workers. Glutaraldehyde is commonly used as a sterilizing agent in me

Contact dermatitis in funeral service workers.

84 funeral service workers and 38 control workers were evaluated for the presence of skin disease by history, clinical examination and patch tests with formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. No relationship between either personal or family history of cutaneous or respiratory manifestations of atopy and clinical parameters of cutaneous disease or patch test results was found. Cutaneous disease was reported in apprentices, active embalmers and inactive embalmers in decreasing order of frequency. Positive patch test reactions to formaldehyde and glutaraldehyde were found in 4% and 7% of the exposed wo

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis in beauticians.

We patch tested 13 beauticians with hand dermatitis between 1982 and 1986. They were all young female novice beauticians or those in training. The onset of their allergic dermatitis was noticed within 1 month to 1 year of their starting this occupation. Definite positive reactions to products were seen from hair dyes (as is, open test) (6/12), cold permanent wave primary solutions (as is, open test) (7/13) and a shampoo (1% aq., closed test) (1/13). Positive reactions to allergens were seen with para-phenylenediamine (1% pet) (12/13), ammonium thioglycolate (5% aq., open test) (3/7), para-tolu

Allergic contact dermatitis from Stomadhesive paste.

A woman developed dermatitis from Stomadhesive paste used to secure her colostomy appliance. Patch testing revealed that she was allergic to Gantrez (N-butylmonoester of polymethyl vinyl ether maleic acid in an ethanol solution), a water soluble copolymer with stabilizing properties used in the production of Stomadhesive.

Contact dermatitis to yellow iron oxide.

After epicutaneous patch testing, a 43-year-old non-atopic white female with eyelid dermatitis was found to be allergic to yellow iron oxide used as a dye in her mascara. Yellow iron oxide, also known as limonite or yellow ochre, is a common cosmetic dye which has not previously been described as a source of contact dermatitis. Formulation of mascara as well as classification of naturally occurring iron oxides are discussed.

Allergic contact dermatitis to some medicaments.

Over the years, changes have had to be made in the list of topical drugs most frequently responsible for allergic contact dermatitis. The 4 most common sensitizers in Italy in the past have been penicillin, sulfonamide, promethazine and neomycin. Now the list is headed by neomycin, benzocaine and ethylenediamine. Antihistamines and parabens are less frequently observed as sensitizers. The increasing topical use of new drugs and additives, as well as older sensitizers, produces reactions to other substances, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, some antimycotic drugs, propylene glyco

[Allergic contact dermatitis caused by plants].

The proliferation of house and garden plants, some of them highly sensitizing, produced by the general improvement of the standard of living, is causing an increase in the number of cases of contact dermatitis from plants with both irritative and allergic mechanisms. During the past 12 years, we have studied 43 cases of allergic eczema caused by plant contact as primary sensitization which supposes 2.4% of the patients with allergic contact dermatitis attended in our Services. The majority of patients were women (65%) as opposed to 35% men while the ages varied from 12 to 70 years with an aver

Contact dermatitis caused by diphenhydramine hydrochloride.

Three cases of contact dermatitis caused by an ethanolamine antihistamine, diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl), are described. Patients who develop contact dermatitis from it should avoid its oral or parenteral administration because they may develop a localized or generalized flare of dermatitis. Dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), clemastine fumarate (Tavist), carbinoxamine maleate (Clistin-D), and doxylamine succinate (Decapryn) are also ethanolamine antihistamines. Since they may cross-react with diphenhydramine hydrochloride, they should be avoided in sensitive patients.

Irritant contact dermatitis to glyceryl monothioglycolate.

Glyceryl monothioglycolate has recently been implicated as an allergen. A case of a hairdresser who used this material is presented. He appeared to have an irritant contact dermatitis on his fingertips. Patch testing the patient and extensive patch testing in a group of fifty-four volunteers showed a very high incidence of irritant positive patch tests. No instance of allergy could be demonstrated in the reading of the patch tests or in biopsies of several individuals. Differentiation between allergens and irritants is difficult at times, but is necessary to avoid mislabeling of chemicals.

Contact dermatitis from cyanide plating solutions.

Two cases of contact dermatitis from electroplating solutions were attributed to irritation from cyanide salts. Both demonstrated similar clinical features. In neither could concomitant contact allergy to other constituents of the plating solutions be demonstrated. In one case, irritation could not be attributed to the alkalinity of the plating solution. Contact dermatitis from cyanide plating solutions may be associated with systemic symptoms, since cyanide is rapidly absorbed through the skin. Poor handling and hygiene techniques in the workplace should be corrected immediately.

Allergic contact dermatitis from oxygen cannulas.

A patient experienced allergic contact dermatitis on two occasions two months apart as a result of wearing the same brand of polyvinyl chloride oxygen cannula. In one instance the cannula was removed and not replaced, as continuing oxygen was unnecessary; on the other occasion the original cannula was replaced by a cannula of another brand. In both cases the dermatitis disappeared after removal of the original cannula. The reaction was probably to a resin remaining in the polyvinyl chloride after the curing process in the manufacture of the plastic from which the cannula was made. Allergic rea

Allergic contact dermatitis from topical fluorouracil.

An allergic contact dermatitis from fluorouracil developed in two patients 8 and 18 days respectively after institution of topical fluorouracil therapy. The character of the usual irritant dermatitis changed to that of an allergic dermatitis. Epicutaneous patch tests and intradermal tests with fluorourcil were reactive. Histologic specimens of positive test sites revealed the changes expected in allergic contact dermatitis. Twelve control subjects failed to react to intradermal fluorouracil tests.
