Occupational Contact Dermatitis in Employees of Large-Scale Narcotic Crop Farms of Ethiopia: Prevalence and Risk Factors. A Self-Reported Study Using the Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Occupational skin diseases are the second leading occupational disease, accounting for almost 25% of all missed workdays. Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) accounts for 70% to 90% of all skin disorders in the workplace. Only a few occupational epidemiology studies have looked into the prevalence and risk factors of occupation-induced dermatitis among narcotic crop farm workers around the world. Related studies in Ethiopia are even fewer. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in the Dirashe district of Southern Ethiopia from March 23 to April 12, 2021. Data was collec

Severely compromised supply of patch test allergens in Europe hampers adequate diagnosis of occupational and non-occupational contact allergy. A European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD), European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) task forces 'Contact Dermatitis' and 'Occupational Skin Disease' position paper.

Patch testing is the only clinically applicable diagnostic method for Type IV allergy. The availability of Type IV patch test (PT) allergens in Europe, however, is currently scarce. This severely compromises adequate diagnostics of contact allergy, leading to serious consequences for the affected patients. Against this background, the European Society of Contact Dermatitis (ESCD) has created a task force (TF) (i) to explore the current availability of PT substances in different member states, (ii) to highlight some of the unique characteristics of Type IV vs. other allergens and (iii) to sugge

Prevalence, pattern, contact sensitisers and impact on quality-of-life of occupational dermatitis among beekeepers in North India.

BACKGROUND: Beekeepers face specific occupational health risks due to exposure to bee products and chemicals. Propolis is a notable cause of contact hypersensitivity in beekeepers. Its chemical composition varies by region, complicating allergy investigations. While propolis allergies are documented in Western populations, no studies exist in India. AIM: To assess the prevalence and patterns of dermatitis among beekeepers, identify contact sensitisers and evaluate its impact on quality-of-life (QoL). METHODS: An 18-month community-based cross-sectional study was conducted involving 340 beeke

Work-related and personal risk factors for occupational contact dermatitis: A systematic review of the literature with meta-analysis.

The objective of this review is to identify work-related and personal risk factors for contact dermatitis (CD), and assess their association with this frequently occurring occupational disease. A systematic review of the literature from 1990 to June 2, 2020, was conducted using Medline and Embase. Prospective cohort and case-control studies were included, and meta-analyses were conducted when feasible. Quality of evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation. Twenty-nine studies were identified, comprising 26 study populations and with a to

Effect of trichloroacetaldehyde on the activation of CD4+T cells in occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis: An in vivo and in vitro study.

Occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis induced by trichloroethylene (OMLDT) is a hypersensitivity disease with autoimmune liver injury, which has increasingly become a serious occupational health problem in China. However, the pathogenesis of OMLDT remained undefined. In this study, 30 TCE-induced OMLDT patients, 58 exposure controls, and 40 non-exposure controls were recruited. We showed that the ratio of activated CD4+ T cells (downregulation of CD62 L) was dramatically increased in OMLDT patients compared to exposure and non-exposure control, suggesting that CD4+ T cells activation was

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis caused by photobonded sculptured nails and a review of (meth) acrylates in nail cosmetics.

BACKGROUND: Mono(meth)acrylates (monoacrylates and monomethacrylates) are moderate to strong sensitizers. They are used in the production of a great variety of polymers, including nail cosmetics. OBJECTIVE: A patient who became occupationally sensitized to photobonded sculptured nails is reported. Detailed patch testing and analyses of the patient's nail cosmetics containing mono(meth)acrylates clarified the cause of her hand and face dermatitis. The current knowledge on mono(meth)acrylates in nail cosmetics is also reviewed. METHODS: Patch testings with conventional methods, including patch

Occupational Dermatitis in Welding: Does Nickel Exposure Account for Higher Rates in Women? Analysis of a Canadian Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Women are reported to have higher rates of nickel sensitization than men, but there have been few studies of sex-related differences in dermatitis associated with occupational nickel exposure. This analysis examines dermatitis in a large cohort of women and men in welding and electrical occupations and considers how far differences in rates of dermatitis may be accounted for by nickel exposure. METHODS: Women and men were recruited to cohorts of workers who had entered welding and electrical apprenticeships (the WHAT-ME and WHAT-MEN studies). Participants completed questionnaires

Occupational hazards in agriculture - a severe case of lime sulphur-induced irritant contact dermatitis with characteristic skin manifestations.

A 58-year-old female patient presented with erythema, swelling, erosions, yellow-white crusts, and severe pain in both hands for one day. Distinct from typical cases of allergic contact dermatitis, the condition progressed rapidly, characterized by leather-like crusts resembling adhered lime and scattered erosions. After one month of treatment, the lesions resolved almost completely, leaving residual scars and mild functional impairment. This case report describes occupational exposure to lime sulphur, a strongly alkaline pesticide known to cause severe irritant contact dermatitis, and emphasi

Self-Reported Allergic Occupational Contact Dermatitis among Dental Healthcare Professionals in United Arab Emirates -A Cross Sectional Study.

In dentistry, occupational contact dermatitis may affect dental professionals along with technicians, nurses, and patients. Changes to dental practice in recent years have altered the reported frequencies of allergens causing contact dermatitis in both dental professionals and dental patients. In the current cross-sectional study, we used a structured questionnaire and clinical examinations to examine the prevalence of self-reported hand eczema among United Arab Emirates (UAE). The relationship between subjective skin discomfort and latex, composite/bonding, or other dental materials also was

Dynamic analysis of peripheral blood TCR β-chain CDR3 repertoire in occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis due to trichloroethylene.

Previously, we had cross-sectionally explored the characteristics of T cell receptor (TCR) repertoires from occupational medicamentosa-like dermatitis due to trichloroethylene (OMDT) patients, now we further analyzed the dynamic features of OMDT TCR repertoires. Peripheral blood TCR β-chain complementarity-determining region 3 (CDR3) genes were detected with the high throughput sequencing in 24 OMDT cases in their acute, chronic and recovery stages, respectively, and in 24 trichloroethylene-exposed healthy controls. The TCR repertoire diversity, TRBV/TRBD/TRBJ gene usage and combination, frequ

Occupational allergic contact dermatitis from 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate in a modified acrylic structural adhesive.

Acrylates have a broad area of application in various products including glues, sealants and adhesives. Whereas anaerobic acrylic sealants are well-known sensitizers, acrylate glues that cure in air have only seldom been reported as allergens. Here a patient sensitized to such a glue, and developing hand dermatitis that spread to the lower arms, chest, neck and face, is presented. Her glue was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and contained 24.6% 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) and 0.4% ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). These 2 acrylate compounds, as well as h
