Novel Non-Steroidal Facial Cream Demonstrates Antifungal and Anti-Inflammatory Properties in Ex Vivo Model for Seborrheic Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SEBD) is a chronic, recurrent skin disorder that typically occurs as an inflammatory response to fungi of the genus Malassezia. The development of an ex vivo model that mimics the fungal proliferation and skin inflammation of SEBD would play an important role in screening formulations for their efficacy in treating SEBD. METHODS: An ex vivo model for SEBD using human skin explants that had been mechanically manipulated to facilitate colonization of Malassezia furfur was developed. This model was used to evaluate the efficacy of a novel non-steroidal facial

Malassezia arunalokei sp. nov., a Novel Yeast Species Isolated from Seborrheic Dermatitis Patients and Healthy Individuals from India.

The majority of species within the genus Malassezia are lipophilic yeasts that colonize the skin of warm-blooded animals. Two species, Malassezia globosa and Malassezia restricta, are implicated in the causation of seborrheic dermatitis/dandruff (SD/D). During our survey of SD/D cases, we isolated several species of Malassezia and noticed vast variations within a few lipid-dependent species. Variations observed in the phenotypic characteristics (colony morphology, absence of catalase activity, growth at 37°C, and precipitation surrounding wells containing Tween 20 or Cremophor EL) suggested th

Patient and Healthcare Provider Perspectives on Disease Burden of Seborrheic Dermatitis in the United States: Results from a National Survey.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease, but the physical and emotional burden of patients with SD experience has not been well characterized. METHODS: The Harris Poll conducted online surveys of US patients and healthcare providers (HCPs) from December 2021 to January 2022. RESULTS: Almost half of patients reported that SD negatively impacts their emotional and physical well-being "a lot/a great deal"; HCPs underestimate the level of impact on patients. Most patients with SD reported a significant mental health impact, including anxiety, depre

The global, regional, and national burden of seborrheic dermatitis: results and insights from the Global Burden of Disease 2019 Study.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is a chronic skin disease affecting infants, adolescents, and adults. The cause of SD is not known. Previous studies suggested genetic and environmental roles in the etiology of the disease. However, epidemiological data on SD have been scarce. The study aimed to analyze the burden of SD. We analyzed national and macro-regional SD data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019) resources. Regression analysis was performed to compute the annual percent change (APC) and identify significant changes in the temporal prevalence trends of SD from 1990 to 2019

Smartphone-based multispectral imaging and machine-learning based analysis for discrimination between seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis on the scalp.

For appropriate treatment, accurate discrimination between seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis in a timely manner is crucial to avoid complications. However, when they occur on the scalp, differential diagnosis can be challenging using conventional dermascopes. Thus, we employed smartphone-based multispectral imaging and analysis to discriminate between them with high accuracy. A smartphone-based multispectral imaging system, suited for scalp disease diagnosis, was redesigned. We compared the outcomes obtained using machine learning-based and conventional spectral classification methods to ach

Comparison of scalp interleukin-17 levels in hijab-wearing women with and without seborrheic dermatitis and the correlation with disease severity.

Seborrheic dermatitis (SD) is linked with Malassezia colonization, which increases in hijab-wearing women. The growing number of hijab wearers in Indonesia makes this issue relevant. Interleukin (IL)-17 plays a role in inflammation and antifungal immunity, including against Malassezia. However, studies on the role of IL-17 in SD, particularly in hijab-wearing women, are currently lacking. Our study purpose was to evaluate differences in IL-17 levels between hijab-wearing women with SD and without SD, and their correlation with SD severity. This cross-sectional study included 66 hijab-wearing p

Malassezia globosa and restricta: breakthrough understanding of the etiology and treatment of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis through whole-genome analysis.

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (D/SD) share an etiology dependent upon three factors: sebum, microbial metabolism (specifically, Malassezia yeasts), and individual susceptibility. Advances in microbiological and analytical techniques permit a more detailed understanding of these etiologic factors, especially the role of Malassezia. Malassezia are lipid-dependent and demonstrate adaptation allowing them to exploit a narrow niche on sebum-rich skin. Work in our and our collaborators' laboratories has focused on understanding these adaptations by detailed analysis of biochemistry and gene exp

A new yeast, Malassezia yamatoensis, isolated from a patient with seborrheic dermatitis, and its distribution in patients and healthy subjects.

Over the last few years, new Malassezia species have been found regularly in Japanese subjects. We isolated another new Malassezia species from a Japanese patient with seborrheic dermatitis (SD), and named it M. yamatoensis. In its physiological characteristics and the utilization of Tween by M. yamatoensis is similar to that of M. furfur and M. dermatis. It is distinguished by its growth temperature. To examine the distribution of the microorganism in the skin of patients with SD and atopic dermatitis (AD), and healthy subjects, we applied transparent dressings to the skin, and detected M. ya
