The strength of the association between diaper dermatitis and measurements of skin wetness and skin pH was evaluated by statistical analysis of four diaper trials involving 1601 infants. Although the strength of the association between skin wetness and diaper dermatitis was greater than that between skin pH and diaper dermatitis, increases in wetness and pH were both significantly associated with elevated mean grades for diaper dermatitis. The skin environment least likely to be associated with diaper dermatitis is one in which increases in both skin wetness and skin pH are minimized.

The urea test for diagnosis of Ménière's disease in 142 cases has been reported. The auditory alternations by dehydration tests with urea and glycerol were compared. Clinical observations demonstrate that the urea test gave the same positive rate as the glycerol test in patients with Ménière's disease. The adverse effects of urea are rather slight. It seems that the urea test be preferable to other methods of diagnostic dehydration. Guinea pigs were used to study the acute dehydration of the inner ear. The possible mechanism of dehydration was also discussed.

The calcium hydroxide ionization of four root canal sealers (Sealapex, CRCS, Sealer 26, and Apexit) was studied by measuring conductivity and pH and by conducting atomic absorption spectrophotometry. BACKGROUND: TGF-β is a pleiotropic cytokine that can have pro- or anti-inflammatory effects depending on the context. Elevated levels of bioactive TGF-β1 in tears and elevated TGF-β1mRNA transcripts in conjunctiva and minor salivary glands of human Sjögren's Syndrome patients has also been reported. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the response to desiccating stress (DS), an experimental model of dry eye, in dominant-negative TGF-β type II receptor (CD4-DNTGFβRII) mice. These mice have a truncated TGF-β receptor in CD4(+) T cells, rendering them unresponsive to TGF-β.

BACKGROUND: Dried blood spots (DBSs) have gained recent popularity as a sampling method for therapeutic drug monitoring. For patients, DBS sampling has several advantages over venous blood sampling. However, technical issues primarily influenced by hematocrit levels, interfere with the implementation of this method in daily clinical practice. The results of concentration measurements of drugs that are influenced by hematocrit should be corrected for hematocrit levels. In this article, we developed a fast, nondestructive, near-infrared (NIR)-based method for measuring the hematocrit in DBSs.
