We developed a dextran-magnetite conjugated cisplatin (DM-Cis) complex for use in thermal ablation and as a chemotherapeutic drug. To produce DM-Cis we reacted Cis with 1 mL DM (56 mg/mL iron). The temperature rise of DM-Cis was measured in vitro and in vivo under a portable induction-heating (IH) device. Platinum desorption from DM-Cis over 24 hours was measured in bovine serum. A composition of amphotericin B and dialdehyde dextran was used for the therapy of male C57Bl/6 mice with systemic candidiasis. The composition was more effective than free amphotericin B. BACKGROUND: In colitis, iron therapy may be given to treat anemia, but it may also be detrimental based on our previous studies using a rat model with colitis where iron supplementation increased disease activity and oxidative stress. This effect was partially reduced by an antioxidant.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to further evaluate, in rats with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, the effect of iron on neutrophilic infiltration, cytokines and nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kappaB)-associated inflammation and to determine whether the addition of vitamin E would be beneficial.

The hemodynamic effects of rapid intravenous (IV) administration of 10% dextran 40 in saline solution (D40) and 7.2% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) in calves were compared. Calves received isotonic saline solution (ISS), HSS or D40 (3 calves/group) and were monitored of blood pressure, and cardiac output (CO) for 180 min. HSS and D40 infusions induced a significant increase in relative plasma volume reaching 134.9+/-2.8 and 125.0+/-1.9%, respectively at the end of fluid infusion. AIMS: Intravascular inflammatory events during ischaemia/reperfusion injury following coronary angioplasty alter and denudate the endothelium of its natural anticoagulant heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) layer, contributing to myocardial tissue damage. Protein-losing enteropathy is an uncommon syndrome of excessive loss of protein via the gastrointestinal mucosa. Tc-99m dextran is a tracer ideally suited for diagnosis and localization. The authors report a case of melanoma mestastases to the small bowel that were causing protein-losing enteropathy. These were diagnosed and localized using Tc-99m dextran, leading to a curative resection.

PURPOSE: This feasibility study was undertaken to compare the sensitivity of Tc-99m dextran with that of Tc-99m human immunoglobulin G to diagnose ulcerative colitis, and to explore its possible role in disease follow-up.

In an experimental study we evaluate the anti-adherential effect of four different solutions: physiological serum, Chloramphenicol, Dextran 70 (32%) and the association of these last two solutions. Synergic effect is shown when using an antibiotic (Chloramphenicol) with a non-bactericid solution (Dextran). Comparing our results with current literature, we are confident on the efficacity of similar association concerning other solutions than Dextran 70 (32%).

Forty-one patients with cirrhosis and tense ascites were randomized to receive daily paracentesis of 5 liters associated with Dextran 70 as volume expander (6 g for each 1000 ml of ascites removed) (group I = 20 patients) or paracentesis with albumin (6 g for each 1000 ml of ascites) (group II = 21 patients). We have studied haemodilution and cardiovascular responses to i.v. hydration with either 3% dextran 70 (Dx70) or Ringer's acetate using a non-invasive cardiac output monitor (BoMed NCCOM3-R7) in 40 healthy parturients undergoing Caesarean section under extradural anaesthesia. Haemodilution was more pronounced, and central venous pressure, mean arterial pressure and cardiac index maintained at greater values, after treatment with Dx70. Colloid osmotic pressures (COP) decreased by 1.7 mm Hg after loading with 3% Dx70, and by 5.6 mm Hg in mothers treated with Ringer's acetate (P less than 0.001).

A beta-lactamase gene was cloned from Streptomyces cellulosae as a 2.3-kb DNA fragment using Streptomyces lividans 1326 and PIJ385 as a host-vector system.
