Design and psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions of discrimination by nurse educators: a protocol for a mixed-method study.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived discrimination by nurse educators is a harmful phenomenon in nursing education that influences nursing students in both classroom and clinical settings. It is associated with psychological distress, reduced learning outcomes, feelings of hopelessness and higher rates of attrition. There is a need to identify the dimensions of discrimination for developing strategies to promote educational justice. This research aims to develop and test the psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate nursing students' perceptions and experiences of discrimination by nurse educat

Perceived Discrimination and Pandemic Attitudes on Cancer Screening Behaviors Among Asian American Women: A Sequential Explanatory Mixed-Methods Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess how pandemic-related health concerns and discrimination affected cancer screenings among Asian American women (AAW). METHODS: A two-phase explanatory mixed-methods study was conducted. In phase 1, a survey was distributed among AAW eligible for lung, breast, or colorectal cancer screening to assess delays during the pandemic, concerns about contracting coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), barriers to care, and experiences of discrimination. In phase 2, four qualitative focus group discussions, stratified by generational status and history of delaye

Effects of selective dopamine receptor agonists in rats trained to discriminate apomorphine from saline.

Rats (N = 12) were trained to discriminate apomorphine (0.25 mg/kg, IP) from saline in a two-lever, food-reinforced (FR 30) drug discrimination paradigm. When the discrimination was acquired, various doses of apomorphine as well as several other dopamine receptor agonists were injected before test sessions. Apomorphine (0.03-0.25 mg/kg, IP) produced a dose-related increase in the percent of responses that occurred on the drug lever during test sessions. The selective DA2 receptor agonist piribedil (0.25-8.0 mg/kg, IP) produced a dose-related increase in drug lever responding that was similar t

A Cross-Nationally Validated Nomogram for Cardiometabolic Multimorbidity in Overweight/Obese Older Adults: CHARLS and HRS Cohorts.

AIMS: Middle-aged and older adults with overweight or obesity are at increased risk of cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), yet validated prediction tools tailored to this population remain limited. This study aimed to develop and validate a multidimensional nomogram integrating metabolic, functional and psychological predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data (2011 and 2015), 3965 overweight/obese adults with a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 24.0 kg/m2 were randomly split into development (n = 2775) and validation (n = 1190) sets. The Ankle Ligament Reconstruction-Return to Sport after Injury (ALR-RSI) is a valid and reliable measure to assess psychological readiness before returning to sport following peroneal tendon pathology surgery.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to validate a scale that could help surgeons evaluate patients' psychological readiness to return to sport (RTS) after peroneal tendon pathology surgery. METHODS: The Ankle Ligament Reconstruction-Return to Sport after Injury (ALR-RSI) scale, which had previously been validated in ankle ligament reconstruction patients, was adapted to evaluate the psychological preparedness for RTS in athletic patients who underwent peroneal tendinopathy surgery. The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) and Foot Ankle Ability Measurement (FAAM) scores were employed as p

Increased colonic pain sensitivity in irritable bowel syndrome is the result of an increased tendency to report pain rather than increased neurosensory sensitivity.

OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine whether lower visceral pain thresholds in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) primarily reflect physiological or psychological factors. METHODS: Firstly, 121 IBS patients and 28 controls underwent balloon distensions in the descending colon using the ascending methods of limits (AML) to assess pain and urge thresholds. Secondly, sensory decision theory analysis was used to separate physiological from psychological components of perception: neurosensory sensitivity (p(A)) was measured by the ability to discriminate between 30 mm Hg vs 34 mm Hg distensions; psycho

Changes in depression awareness and attitudes in Australia: the impact of beyondblue: the national depression initiative.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in depression awareness and attitudes in Australia and the effect that beyondblue: the national depression initiative has had on these. METHOD: Data from national surveys of mental health literacy in 1995 and 2003-2004 were analysed to see if states and territories that funded beyondblue (the high-exposure states) had greater changes than those that did not (the low-exposure states). In both surveys, participants were shown a depression vignette and asked whether they themselves or family or friends had ever had a similar problem, whether they thought the person w

Sexual Minority Women's Satisfaction with Health Care Providers and State-level Structural Support: Investigating the Impact of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Nondiscrimination Legislation.

PURPOSE: Structural discrimination is associated with negative health outcomes among sexual minority populations. Recent changes to state-level and national legislation provide both the opportunity and the need to further explore the impact of legislation on the health indicators of sexual minorities. Using an ecosocial theory lens, the present research addresses the relationship between structural support or discrimination and satisfaction with one's health care provider among sexual minority women. METHODS: Data were drawn from an online survey of sexual minority women's health care experie

A multivariate study of patients with temporomandibular joint disorder, atypical facial pain, and dental pain.

The multifactorial nature of oral and facial pain was investigated by the collection of clinical and psychologic data from 312 patients with either dental pain, temporomandibular joint disorder, or atypical facial pain. Significant differences between the groups in gender and age distribution, muscle and joint pain, radiographic joint changes, number of remaining teeth, pain duration, and aspects of the patients' perception of pain were evident. In addition, discriminant function analysis clearly differentiated between the three groups on the basis of both clinical and psychologic variables, e

The processing of voice identity in developmental prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Developmental prosopagnosia is a disorder of face recognition that is believed to reflect impairments of visual mechanisms. However, voice recognition has rarely been evaluated in developmental prosopagnosia to clarify if it is modality-specific or part of a multi-modal person recognition syndrome. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to examine whether voice discrimination and/or recognition are impaired in subjects with developmental prosopagnosia. DESIGN/METHODS: 73 healthy controls and 12 subjects with developmental prosopagnosia performed a match-to-sample test of voice discrimination an

The time course of the inversion effect during individual face discrimination.

Human faces look more similar to each other when they are presented upside down, leading to an increase in error rate and response time during individual face discrimination tasks. This face inversion effect (FIE) is one of the most robust findings in the face processing literature. Recent neuroimaging studies using adaptation to face identity have shown that the "fusiform face area" was the primary neural source of the behavioral FIE. However, the time course of the FIE, that is, when inversion affects the coding of facial identity in the human brain, remains unclear. Here, we addressed this

Evaluation of animal welfare by the self-expression of an anxiety state.

Although mental well-being has long been accepted as an important aspect of animal welfare, the subjective feelings of farm or laboratory animals are regarded as lying beyond the scope of scientific enquiry. We now report that pharmacological conditioning of pigs with a drug, pentylenetetrazole, known to induce anxiety in man, permits investigation of the presence or absence of this psychological state during exposure to a variety of environmental stimuli encountered during normal husbandry. Such pharmacological conditioning therefore provides a valuable means to assess and improve elements of

A network psychometric evaluation of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - III and PsyFlex.

Psychological flexibility and inflexibility are core processes in the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and are consistently associated with well-being and emotional distress. However, the validity of widely used measures, particularly the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - II (AAQ-II), has been questioned due to potential overlap with indicators of distress and neuroticism. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire - III (AAQ-III) and the PsyFlex in a general population sample from Colombia (N = 785) using network psychometrics.

A psychological-scaling approach to unraveling the nature of Pigeons' categorization of natural visual objects.

Developing a deep understanding of animal cognition in tasks such as category learning demands that one first achieve an appreciation of an animal's sensory/perceptual/memory world. In this project, we report work that, for the first time, derives a nonhuman high-dimensional psychological-scaling representation for a set of visual objects and uses the representation to predict complex forms of category learning in a nonhuman species. Specifically, we pursue the question of whether pigeons can acquire multiple hard-to-discriminate rock-image categories as defined in the geologic sciences. We te

Needs and experiences of cancer care in patients' perspectives among the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community: a systematic review.

Individuals within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) community who are diagnosed with cancer experience inequitable treatment in healthcare systems worldwide, resulting in dissatisfaction, communication challenges with healthcare providers, and a deep sense of disappointment. Stigma, discrimination, and perceived homophobia further heighten the risk of psychological and attitudinal disorders, including depression and suicidal tendencies, among LGBTQ cancer patients. To comprehensively assess the discrimination faced by LGBTQ cancer patients and gain deeper insights into

Prevalence and minority-stress correlates of past 12-month prescription drug misuse in a national sample of transgender and gender nonbinary adults: Results from the U.S. Transgender Survey.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug (PD) misuse, particularly opioid misuse, is a major US public health concern. While transgender and gender nonbinary (TGNB) individuals experience numerous health disparities, including substance use disparities, little research has focused on PD misuse in this population. METHODS: Data for this secondary analysis come from the US Transgender Survey (N = 26,689). First, we examined bivariate differences in past 12-month PD misuse among binary transgender women, binary transgender men, nonbinary individuals assigned-female-at-birth (AFAB), and nonbinary individual
