A diving physician's experience of dental barotrauma during hyperbaric chamber exposure: case report.

Previous cases of dental barotrauma have been reported in pilots and divers. We report a case of dental barotrauma and barodontalgia in a diving physician accompanying patients during hyperbaric oxygen treatment, and due to pressure changes in the hyperbaric chamber. The physician developed sharp pain localised to the right maxillary molars but radiating to the face, ear and head during decompression from 243 kPa (2.4 atmospheres absolute). The pain intensified following completion of decompression and was consistent with irreversible pulpitis. Clinical examination and panoramic radiography su…

[Is Flying or Diving risky after cochlear implantation? Examination in a pressure chamber].

OBJECTIVE: Complications after cochlear implantation are relatively rare but patients are asked to follow certain behavioral rules. Until now there is no evidence if pressure changes that occur during flying and diving are safe for patients after cochlear implantation. For example, no recommendation exists for SCUBA- diving activities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a hypo-/hyperbaric pressure chamber patients after cochlear implantation were exposed to a standardized profile of decompression and compression simulating a flight in a common airplane and a dive. Pre and after the exposure in the pre…

Decompression Illness in Repetitive Breath-Hold Diving: Why Ischemic Lesions Involve the Brain?

Nitrogen (N2) accumulation in the blood and tissues can occur due to breath-hold (BH) diving. Post-dive venous gas emboli have been documented in commercial BH divers (Ama) after repetitive dives with short surface intervals. Hence, BH diving can theoretically cause decompression illness (DCI). "Taravana," the diving syndrome described in Polynesian pearl divers by Cross in the 1960s, is likely DCI. It manifests mainly with cerebral involvements, especially stroke-like brain attacks with the spinal cord spared. Neuroradiological studies on Ama divers showed symptomatic and asymptomatic ischemi…

Effects of dynamic apnea training on diving bradycardia and short distance swimming performance.

BACKGROUND: Apnea training enhances bradycardia and improves competitive apnea performance and has been proposed as a training method for ot … 2 weeks of DYN training enhanced DYN performance, which may be caused by the enhanced apnea-induced diving bradycardia. Further research is required to determine whether DYN training enhances short distance freestyle swimming performance.

Investigations on the buckling and dynamics of diving-inspired systems when entering water.

This work provides comparative modeling approaches to determine the velocities and natural frequencies of plunge-diving bird and bioinspired drone systems when entering water. These systems are chosen to further explain the survival of diving birds as they impact water and to provide insight into the design geometry and material choice of bioinspired diving drones. A nonlinear reduced-order model is developed and utilized to analyze the dive at impact considering both Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam theories. Using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are first derived. Then, stat…

Stroke effort and relative lung volume influence heart rate in diving sea lions.

The dive response, bradycardia (decreased heart rate) and peripheral vasoconstriction, is the key mechanism allowing breath-hold divers to perform long-duration dives while actively swimming and hunting prey. This response is variable and modulated by factors such as dive duration, depth, exercise and cognitive control. This study assessed the potential role of exercise and relative lung volume in the regulation of heart rate (fH) during dives of adult female California sea lions instrumented with electrocardiogram (ECG), depth and tri-axial acceleration data loggers. A positive relationship b

Postnatal development of diving physiology: implications of anthropogenic disturbance for immature marine mammals.

Marine mammals endure extended breath-holds while performing active behaviors, which has fascinated scientists for over a century. It is now known that these animals have large onboard oxygen stores and utilize oxygen-conserving mechanisms to prolong aerobically supported dives to great depths, while typically avoiding (or tolerating) hypoxia, hypercarbia, acidosis and decompression sickness (DCS). Over the last few decades, research has revealed that diving physiology is underdeveloped at birth. Here, I review the postnatal development of the body's oxygen stores, cardiorespiratory system and…

Pulmonary oedema in breath-hold diving: an unusual presentation and computed tomography findings.

Haemoptysis and pulmonary oedema following deep breath-hold diving have been described in recent years. We describe the case of a 33-year-old healthy military diver who presented symptoms suggestive of pulmonary oedema after two breathhold dives, the first lasting 0.5-1 min and the second 1-2 min, to 6 metres' depth in the sea. The diagnosis was promptly confirmed with chest computed tomography showing bilateral interstitial infiltrates in the upper regions of the lungs. To our knowledge, this is the first report to document pulmonary oedema in this setting of shallow breath-hold diving with a…

The prevalence of orofacial pain and tooth fracture (odontocrexis) associated with SCUBA diving.

AIM: To assess the prevalence of orofacial complications associated with SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) diving. Main outcome measures were prevalence of orofacial pain and odontocrexis. METHOD: Two hundred divers at four dive centres on the north-east coast of Australia were asked to complete a questionnaire that requested information regarding diving experience and facial pain and dental symptoms experienced during diving. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-five completed questionnaires were returned (63% response rate). The prevalence of reported orofacial pain was 44%.…

Physical training of combat diving candidates: implications for the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries.

Physical training (PT) is a significant component in the operational preparation for Canadian Forces (CF) combat divers. However, in developing the various components of a PT program, consideration must be given to the potential for increasing the risk of injury. Indeed, all PT programs should incorporate components that minimize risks of injury, thereby attempting to prevent injury. This report identifies high-risk activities associated with PT during a CF Combat Diving Course and contains recommendations for PT modifications. Major high-risk activities identified were: inappropriate exercise…

Desbaric air embolism during diving: an unusual complication of Osler-Weber-Rendu disease.

Cerebral manifestations of Osler-Weber-Rendu disease (OWRD, hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia) including telangiectases, venous malformations, and arteriovenous malformations, are usually under-recognised. The highest complication rate is observed in high flow cerebral arteriovenous malformations, which may present with headache, epilepsy, ischaemia, or haemorrhage. Cerebral air embolism during self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba) diving as the first manifestation of pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM) in OWRD patients has never been reported before. Here we repor…

Control of heart rate by carotid body chemoreceptors during diving in tufted ducks.

Previous work has shown that during forcible submersion of domestic ducks there is a gradual reduction in heart rate to 10-20% of its predive value after 45-60 s. Bilateral denervation of the carotid body chemoreceptors abolishes most of this bradycardia. By use of implanted radio transmitters it has been shown that in free-swimming tufted ducks, Aythya fuligula, there is an immediate reduction in heart rate, on spontaneous diving, from an elevated predive level. It then increases for a few seconds before it stabilizes at a level similar to that recorded when the duck is swimming fairly vigoro…

Effects of carbon dioxide accumulation on post-dive physiological recovery in odontocetes.

Diving performance by marine mammals is associated with marked changes in tissue oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Yet, the primary metric for diving recovery in most studies has focused exclusively on restoring tissue O2, despite the importance of CO2 offloading as a major determinant for diving homeostasis. To assess the combined role of respiratory and blood gases, we compared post-exercise O2 and CO2 recovery rates in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, n=2) and beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas, n=4). System-wide recovery mechanisms were also examined, including blood p…

Arterial blood gas changes in progressively deeper breath-hold dives.

Studies involving breath-hold dives as deep as 60 m have identified a spike in arterial Po2 ([Formula: see text]) and Pco2 ([Formula: see text]) apparently associated with lung compression by water pressure as depth increases. Competitive breath-hold dives may exceed 100 m, raising the possibility that a spike in [Formula: see text] might contribute to narcosis-like symptoms sometimes experienced. To predict the magnitude of this spike, three elite breath-hold divers were instrumented with radial artery catheters and had arterial blood specimens taken at the bottom on separate dives to 20, 40,

The Takotsubo Syndrome: Where the Sympathetic Stress Reflex and the Dive Reflex Conflict.

Understanding of the pathophysiology of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) remains incomplete. This is a hypothesis-driven editorial, proposing a new autonomic mechanism that may explain several important and puzzling features of TTS. Rather than involving a single reflex pathway, we suggest that TTS may result from the interaction and conflict of two evolutionarily conserved autonomic reflex responses. The first is the sympathetic stress response (SSR), a cardiovascular predominantly sympathomimetic reaction characterised by heightened adrenergic activity, tachycardia and cardiovascular stress. The sec

A Deep Dive Into Oncogenic Viruses Understanding Their Role in Cancer and Approaches for Prevention.

Oncogenic viruses, including Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Human Papillomavirus (HPV), Kaposi's Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (KSHV), Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Merkel Cell Polyomavirus (MCPyV), Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV-1), and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), are significant contributors to cancer development, each through distinct mechanisms. EBV is recognised for its association with cancers such as Burkitt lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinoma. High-risk types of HPV are primarily connected to cervical cancer. KSHV plays a crucial role in the development of Kaposi's sarcoma, especially amo
