Modeling Approaches to the Economic Evaluation of Microelimination Strategies for Hepatitis C Virus in High-Risk Populations.

OBJECTIVES: Mathematical models inform hepatitis C virus (HCV) microelimination strategies in high-risk groups, but their reliability depends on underlying methodological choices. We systematically appraised the modeling methods used in economic evaluations of HCV microelimination published between 2015 and 2026. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines (International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews: CRD420251185978), we searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science for original studies using mathematical models to asses

Smartphone addiction as utility-reducing consumption: evidence from university students in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The rapid increase in smartphone usage among university students has raised concerns about problematic use and its implications for mental well-being. While most existing studies adopt psychological perspectives, limited research interprets excessive smartphone use through an economic lens. Drawing on theories of rational addiction and time allocation, excessive smartphone use can be conceptualized as a form of utility-reducing consumption, where time spent on smartphones displaces welfare-enhancing activities such as physical activity and social interaction. This study aims to exa

The dual impact of tobacco spending: crowding out essentials and crowding in addictive behaviors.

Tobacco use, a major preventable risk factor for premature death and morbidity, profoundly shapes individual and household decision-making. Tobacco spending in lower-income economies exacerbates economic strain of the households. To accommodate tobacco costs, many households are forced to reduce essential expenditures on health and education-a phenomenon known as the crowding out effect. This study uses data from Albania's national Household Budget Survey and applies a three-stage least squares method with instrumental variables to estimate Engel curves to shed light on how tobacco use influen

Cost-Effectiveness of Integrative Pain Management for Chronic Pain: A Systematic Review of Economic Evaluation.

Chronic pain significantly impacts quality of life and productivity, with Integrative Pain Management (IPM) offering a potential solution. However, its cost-effectiveness compared to usual care remains unclear. This systematic review assesses the economic evaluations of IPM interventions for chronic pain. Seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included, focusing on cost-effectiveness measures such as the Incremental Cost-Effectiveness Ratio (ICER) and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). The results showed a broad range of ICER values, from $2,808 to $74,868 per QALY, depending on the

Bridging the gap: how education transforms health outcomes and influences health inequality in rural China.

This study focuses on the impact of education on health and health inequalities in rural areas of China. Education significantly enhances economic status and health, driving economic growth and improving public health standards. Integral to the "Healthy China Strategy," it provides essential guidance for public policy and underscores the need for strategic human capital investments to achieve these goals. The study utilizes data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) spanning 2010-2020 and employs the average educational level within counties as an instrumental variable. The causal impact

Simulating Elastoplastic and Anisotropic Behavior in Thermoplastic Additively Manufactured Components: An Application-Oriented Modeling Approach.

This paper presents a comprehensive approach aimed at developing a coupled process-structure simulation that integrates anisotropic and elastoplastic material behavior for plastic components manufactured through Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing. The simulation incorporates material orientation considerations, linking the process simulation with structural simulation. Subsequently, stress and strain values from the simulations are compared with the test results. Moreover, the fracture behavior of components manufactured in this way is also taken into account in relation to material

Distorted Human Decision-Making as a Critical Aspect of Pandemic Planning and Preparedness.

The United States continues to experience lower than expected vaccination rates against COVID-19 due to a variety of barriers such as lack of trust, lack of planning, cultural perspectives and issues, suboptimal communication, and political/economic conflicts of interest. In this paper issues of human behavior and decision-making are highlighted as integral to understanding the generally poor US response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In particular, the US pandemic response was significantly distorted through a combination of cultural and human behavior issues related to conflicting leadership, c

Using the Multiple-Choice Procedure to Measure the Relative Reinforcing Efficacy of Gambling: Initial Validity Evidence Among College Students.

The multiple choice procedure (MCP) is used to assess the relative reinforcing value of concurrently available stimuli. The MCP was originally developed to assess the reinforcing value of drugs; the current within-subjects study employed the MCP to assess the reinforcing value of gambling behavior. Participants (N = 323) completed six versions of the MCP that presented hypothetical choices between money to be used while gambling ($10 or $25) versus escalating amounts of guaranteed money available immediately or after delays of either 1 week or 1 month. Results suggest that choices on the MCP a

Economic Abuse and Care-seeking Practices for HIV and Financial Support Services in Women Employed by Sex Work: A Cross-Sectional Baseline Assessment of a Clinical Trial Cohort in Uganda.

Economic hardship is a driver of entry into sex work, which is associated with high HIV risk. Yet, little is known about economic abuse in women employed by sex work (WESW) and its relationship to uptake of HIV prevention and financial support services. This study used cross-sectional baseline data from a multisite, longitudinal clinical trial that tests the efficacy of adding economic empowerment to traditional HIV risk reduction education on HIV incidence in 542 WESW. Mixed effects logistic and linear regressions were used to examine associations in reported economic abuse by demographic cha

Substitution and Complementarity in the Consumption of Alcohol, Cannabis, and Opium.

Understanding the behavior of populations of drug consumers has been and remains a topic of keen interest. Using a unique dataset on 25 districts from Bengal, India, from 1911 to 1925, we analyze whether populations of consumers treat alcohol, cannabis, and opium as economic substitutes or complements in a legal regime. Additionally, we examine responsiveness to prices and income. Our analysis has three main findings. First, we find evidence of substitution between alcohol and cannabis bud. Second, cannabis leaf is a complement for alcohol but a substitute for cannabis bud. Third, we find nega

Cost of unintended pregnancy in Sweden - a possibility to lower costs by increasing LARC usage.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine the cost of unintended pregnancy (UP) in Sweden and savings generated by a switch of 5% of women from short-acting reversible contraception (SARC) and other methods to long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs). STUDY DESIGN: We constructed an economic model to estimate the number and costs of UPs and contraceptive use over a 1-year period. The population consisted of all women aged 15-44years requiring reversible contraception and at risk of UP. UPs could result in birth, spontaneous abortion, induced abortion, and ectopic pregnancy

Social factors and trachoma: a review of the literature.

Although great advances have been made in the clinical understanding of trachoma, the disease remains endemic in many parts of the world. Economic, environmental, cultural and behavioral factors continue to play an important role in trachoma transmission and progression. The trachoma literature however, contains relatively few studies which rigorously assess the importance of social factors. A critical review of the trachoma literature implicates individual and community hygiene as important risk factors for disease. Specific risk behaviors remain to be identified and validated as independent

Psychological Factors That Suppress Help-Seeking among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Living Alone.

Help-seeking among destitute adults has not been adequately investigated. Therefore, this study clarifies the mechanisms that suppress help-seeking in middle-aged and older adults living alone. Data were collected from 1274 individuals (aged 50-79 years) who were living alone, using a survey that measured future time perspective, barriers to help-seeking, help-seeking intentions, and current and childhood economic statuses. Men living alone experienced lower help-seeking intention than women, were more likely to try to solve problems by themselves, and experienced greater distrust in others. N

The Willingness to Change Risky Health Behaviors among Chinese Rural Residents: What We Learned from a Population-Based Esophageal Cancer Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of health interventions can be impaired by low socio-economic status and poor living conditions of the target population. However, the specifics of this problem in rural China are still unclear, and appropriate strategies should be explored. METHODS: In 2013, we conducted a questionnaire-based investigation among 410 participants from a population-based esophageal cancer cohort study in rural Anyang, China. Information regarding their demographic characteristics, levels of exposure to four health-risk behaviors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, risky dieta

Covid-19 crisis and hostility against foreigners.

Harmful behavior against out-group members often rises during periods of economic hardship and health pandemics. Here, we test the widespread concern that the Covid-19 crisis may fuel hostility against people from other nations. Using a controlled money-burning task, we elicited hostile behavior among a nationally representative sample (n = 2,186) in the Czech Republic during the first wave of the pandemic. We provide evidence that exogenously elevating the salience of the Covid-19 crisis increases hostility against foreigners from the EU, USA and Asia. This behavioral response is similar acro

A preliminary investigation of the effects of restrictions on Medicaid funding for abortions on female STD rates.

There is evidence in the economics literature that restrictions on Medicaid funding for abortion reduces the demand for abortion. The unresolved question is whether such restrictions also increase safe sex (that is, pregnancy avoidance) behavior among women. This study explores that issue using state-level gonorrhea rates among women for 1975-1995. The rationale is that sexual behavior that leads to greater risk of accidental pregnancies is likely to be highly correlated with sexual behavior leading to greater risk of STD infection. Since gonorrhea has an incubation period of about a week, and

[Compulsive shopping--current considerations on classification and therapy].

Compulsive shopping is classified by ICD-10 (F63.8) as an "impulse control disorder, not otherwise classified". Several authors consider compulsive shopping rather as a variety of dependence disorder. It is characterized by the impulsive or compulsive buying of unneeded things, personal distress, impaired social and vocational functioning, and/or financial problems. In this case, we discuss a two-way therapy consisting of addiction-specific psychological education and high dose selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). We further point to compliance problems caused by SSRI side effects.

Girl-trafficking, HIV / AIDS, and the position of women in Nepal.

This article focuses on trafficking of young Nepalese girls and women. Trafficking is an integral part of the social and economic fabric of Nepal, as in other parts of the world. The practice causes intolerable degradation and suffering for the girls and young women involved, who are treated as a commodity. It presents a risk to their physical and mental health, and in particular to their sexual health. The article examines the connections between coercive sex work and HIV infection, and community and government responses to HIV infection among trafficked sex workers. In particular, it conside
