Occupational health problems in modern dentistry: a review.

Despite numerous technical advances in recent years, many occupational health problems still persist in modern dentistry. These include percutaneous exposure incidents (PEI); exposure to infectious diseases (including bioaerosols), radiation, dental materials, and noise; musculoskeletal disorders; dermatitis and respiratory disorders; eye injuries; and psychological problems. PEI remain a particular concern, as there is an almost constant risk of exposure to serious infectious agents. Strategies to minimise PEI and their consequences should continue to be employed, including sound infection co

Algorithm for asthma diagnosis and management at Chitungwiza Central Hospital, Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: asthma is a chronic inflammatory and a heterogeneous condition of respiratory system whose pathogenesis is linked with variable structural changes. The clinical manifestation of asthma includes attacks of breathlessness, cough, chest tightness and wheezing. Provision of basic equipment and test for asthma diagnosis and access to essential medicines by asthmatic patients reduces morbidity and mortality rates. Significant progress has been made in the diagnosis and management of asthma in other countries but not in the health care delivery system in Zimbabwe. Therefore, the aim of

Ultrasound detection of the sliding lung sign by prehospital critical care providers.

BACKGROUND: The presence of the sonographic sliding lung sign (SLS) is a sensitive indicator for the absence of a pneumothorax. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine if prehospital critical care providers (PHCPs) can acquire and maintain the necessary skills to determine the presence or absence of the SLS following a brief tutorial. METHODS: This was a blinded randomized observational trial using a cadaveric model. The model was randomized to esophageal intubation (negative SLS) or tracheal intubation (positive SLS), and a SonoSite 180 plus (Bothel, WA) machine was used for the e

E-learning within the European cystic fibrosis society - A multidisciplinary cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Continuing professional development (CPD) is a component of practice that spans all disciplines within cystic fibrosis (CF). E-learning resources theoretically represent flexible, low cost and time efficient methods of CPD. We aimed to explore European Cystic Fibrosis Society (ECFS) members' and CF health professional communities' current views, experiences and perceptions of e-learning and the ECFS education platform (ECFS-EP). METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was developed by the ECFS Education Committee and circulated via the ECFS conference, emails and within the soci

Examining uptake of online education on obstructive sleep apnoea in general practitioners: a randomised trial.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) affects up to 28 % of the adult population in Western countries. The detection and management of OSA by general practitioners (GPs) can be poor. The study aimed to examine what influence enhanced invitations had on uptake of on-line learning modules for OSA by GPs, and whether recent referrals of patients to sleep specialists influenced uptake. METHODS: Practicing GPs in regional Australia were identified and randomised to receive either an enhanced or standard invitation letter to a new on-line education module for OSA. The enhanced letter included

Diabetic foot-related problems: improving outcomes in the dialysis population using a foot assessment screening tri-algorithm (FAST).

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to determine the effect of diabetic foot checks on patient awareness, satisfaction, and outcomes. An algorithm was developed based on evidence-based practice, best practice guidelines, and current literature that can be used by nurses and medical staff in the management of foot-related problems in patients with diabetes on dialysis. An educational resource guide was also developed for use when education is required for foot-related problems.

A model program for teaching nurses breast assessment and cancer screening.

The increasing incidence of breast cancer in the United States is well documented in the literature. Associated with this rise is a need for additional health care providers who are well versed in the detection of early breast cancer and who are dedicated public advocates of self-examination skills. To meet this challenge, approximately 300 nurses throughout the U.S. and Europe have attended a course designed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center during the past decade. This article provides an overview of the program, including demographic data describing nurses who completed the course during 1989.

Problems, solutions and actions: addressing barriers in acute hospital care for indigenous Australians and New Zealanders.

The burden of cardiovascular disease for Indigenous people in Australia and New Zealand is high and reflects the failings of our health care system to meet their needs. Improving the hospital care for Indigenous people is critical in improving health outcomes. This paper provides the results from a facilitated discussion on the disparities in acute hospital care and workforce issues. The workshop was held in Alice Springs, Australia at the second Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSANZ) Indigenous Cardiovascular Health Conference. Critical issues to be addressed include: addressing

A status report of veterinary education in Ethiopia: perceived needs, past history, recent changes, and current and future concerns.

Ethiopia, which owns the most important livestock resources in Africa, opened its first faculty of veterinary medicine in 1979. In 2003, in response to a government mandate to increase the number of veterinarians, four new veterinary faculties were founded, but these facilities still have very limited resources. Currently, quality standards and controls for veterinary studies are not established in Ethiopia, and the country does not have any type of veterinary council or oversight body to establish such standards or the essential evaluation and credentialing procedures. The veterinary degree,

Simulation in pediatric anesthesiology.

Simulation-based training, research and quality initiatives are expanding in pediatric anesthesiology just as in other medical specialties. Various modalities are available, from task trainers to standardized patients, and from computer-based simulations to mannequins. Computer-controlled mannequins can simulate pediatric vital signs with reasonable reliability; however the fidelity of skin temperature and color change, airway reflexes and breath and heart sounds remains rudimentary. Current pediatric mannequins are utilized in simulation centers, throughout hospitals in-situ, at national meet

Diagnosis and management of cutaneous infections in immunocompromised hosts. Part I: Cellular immunodeficiency.

For individuals with cell-mediated immunodeficiency (CMI), infections with opportunistic organisms such as mycobacteria, filamentous bacteria, fungi, and protozoa can lead to poor outcomes. The first part of this continuing medical education series reviews the diagnosis and management of cutaneous infections in hosts with impaired CMI. The second part addresses infections in patients with neutropenia and humoral immunodeficiency.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is the United States' most common preventable cause of birth defects and intellectual and developmental disabilities collectively referred to as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to identify gaps in pediatric providers' knowledge and practices regarding FASD patient identification, diagnosis, management and referral, and to inform needs-based FASD resource development. METHODS: Pediatric providers (pediatricians, trainees, nurse practitioners) were exposed to survey links embedded in newsletters electronic
