BACKGROUND: Whereas most radial head fractures are stable injuries, they sometimes occur as part of complex injury patterns with associated elbow instability. Radial head arthroplasty has been favored in patients with unreconstructable radial head fractures and unstable elbow injuries. The purpose of this study was to review radiographic outcomes, functional outcomes, and complications after radial head arthroplasty for radial head fracture in unstable elbow injuries.
METHODS: This study was a retrospective review of radial head fractures treated with radial head arthroplasty by a single surg…

Adolescent baseball players, especially pitchers, are at increased risk for shoulder and elbow injuries as their level of competition increases. The intersection of the adolescent growth spurt with the high levels of elbow valgus and shoulder rotational torques placed upon the arm during overhand pitching predisposes the shoulder and elbow to physeal injuries. Little League shoulder and Little League elbow syndromes most commonly represent pathology at the physeal regions of the proximal and distal humerus and proximal ulna sustained from repetitive loads caused by overhead throwing. There is …

Over 25 million children participate in school-sponsored sports, and an additional 20 million participate in extracurricular organized sports. Over the past decade, increased intensity of training, more pressure for success, new opportunities for structured play, and more organized advanced leagues and traveling teams have led to a corresponding increase in overuse injuries in the skeletally immature athlete. Perhaps the classic sports model for overuse injuries of the upper extremity is baseball. Throwing sports contribute to an increased incidence of elbow and shoulder injuries that might be

Elbow injuries constitute a sizeable percentage of tennis injuries. A basic understanding of biomechanics of tennis and analysis of the forces, loads and motions of the elbow during tennis will improve the understanding of the pathophysiology of these injuries. All different strokes in tennis have a different repetitive biomechanical nature that can result in tennis-related injuries. In this article, a biomechanically-based evaluation of tennis strokes is presented. This overview includes all tennis-related pathologies of the elbow joint, whereby the possible relation of biomechanics to pathol…

In the pediatric population, lateral condyle fractures are relatively common elbow injuries, but not nearly as common are traumatic elbow dislocations, and these 2 types of injuries in combination are even less common. Our literature search showed only 2 reports on these concomitant injuries. In the study reported here, we evaluated a consecutive series of pediatric patients with lateral humeral condyle fractures with and without elbow dislocation and compared the groups' results.

Trauma can render the elbow unstable via a combination of bone and ligament injuries. Some of these injuries feature subluxation rather than dislocation of the elbow. Effective treatment centers on restoring enough of the bony and ligamentous structures to keep the elbow in joint so that recovery can proceed as for a simple elbow dislocation. Recognition of distinct patterns of injury can help determine the structures injured and the best methods for repairing them.

This paper briefly presents the anatomy of the elbow joint, its pathophysiology, the various types of dislocation of the elbow joint and concomitant injuries, the appropriate diagnostic procedures and the indications for surgery and the operative technique applied for correction of dislocation. The only urgent indications for operative treatment are elbow joint dislocation with concomitant bone injuries, persistent instability or luxation position, open injuries and vessel and/or nerve injuries. For purely ligamentous lesions combined with relative loss of stability an operative procedure does

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the inter- and intra-observer reliabilities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis, to examine whether degree of common extensor tendon (CET) injury is related to other elbow abnormalities on MRI, and to investigate the correlation between elbow abnormalities on MRI and patients' symptoms.
METHODS: Fifty-one patients (32 women and 19 men; mean age: 50 years (range, 22-63)) with a diagnosis of lateral epicondylitis were included in the study. The average duration of symptoms was 2.3 years. MRI scoring sys

OBJECTIVE: Aim of surgical treatment is the primary stabilization of the unstable elbow following a ligamentous elbow dislocation.
INDICATIONS: Ligamentous elbow dislocations are typically accompanied by injuries to the surrounding musculature and collateral ligaments of the elbow joint. Surgical treatment is indicated in case of failure of nonoperative therapy, i.e., when a dislocation can only be prevented in immobilization > 90° and pronation of the elbow or an active muscular centering of the elbow fails after 5-7 days.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Contraindications for a solely "internal bracing"

Elbow fracture dislocations are complicated injuries that are difficult to manage and fraught with complications. A complete series of radiographs is typically complemented with CT scan to evaluate the elbow and assist preoperative planning. Typically, operative intervention is necessary and a systematic approach to the elbow injuries should be chosen. This article addresses the coronoid and proceeds to the radial head, lateral soft tissues, and finally the medial ligaments if elbow instability persists. With a focused, systematic surgical approach, improved outcomes have been demonstrated and…

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the elbow allows for high-resolution evaluation of osseous and soft-tissue structures, including ligaments, tendons, nerves, and muscles. Multiple imaging techniques and pulse sequences exist. The purpose of this article is to update orthopaedic surgeons on current MRI techniques and illustrate the spectrum of elbow pathology detectable by MRI.
METHODS: We searched MEDLINE with use of the keywords "MRI" and "elbow" for studies less than five years old evaluating MRI techniques. These papers, our experience, and textbooks reviewing elbow MRI prov

RATIONALE: Ipsilateral simultaneous shoulder and elbow dislocations are rare and complex injuries. Only a few case reports have been published in the literature. Therefore, little is known about the mechanism of injury and its treatment.
PATIENT CONCERNS: An 83-year-old woman presented with severe pain in the right shoulder and elbow after a fall. Radiographs revealed an unusual ipsilateral dislocation of both the elbow and shoulder, without any fractures.
DIAGNOSES: Physical examination and radiographs confirmed an unusual ipsilateral dislocation of both the elbow and shoulder, without any
