Musculoskeletal plasticity after acute spinal cord injury: effects of long-term neuromuscular electrical stimulation training.

Maintaining the physiologic integrity of paralyzed limbs may be critical for those with spinal cord injury (SCI) to be viable candidates for a future cure. No long-term intervention has been tested to attempt to prevent the severe musculoskeletal deterioration that occurs after SCI. The purposes of this study were to determine whether a long-term neuromuscular electrical stimulation training program can preserve the physiological properties of the plantar flexor muscles (peak torque, fatigue index, torque-time integral, and contractile speed) as well as influence distal tibia trabecular bone m

Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve enhances cognitive and motor recovery following moderate fluid percussion injury in the rat.

Intermittent, chronically delivered electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve (VNS) is an FDA-approved procedure for the treatment of refractory complex/partial epilepsy in humans. Stimulation of the vagus has also been shown to enhance memory storage processes in laboratory rats and human subjects. Recent evidence suggests that some of these effects of VNS may be due to the activation of neurons in the nucleus locus coeruleus resulting in the release of norepinephrine (NE) throughout the neuraxis. Because antagonism of NE systems has been shown to delay recovery of function following brain da

Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy (Ohtahara syndrome) after maternal electric injury during pregnancy: etiological considerations.

Early infantile epileptic encephalopathy (EIEE) is a polyetiologic age-dependent neurological disorder. We present two patients with EIEE whose mothers experienced electric injury during pregnancy. After the accident one mother noticed decreased fetal movements. Neither other prenatal factors nor intrapartal damage or postnatally examined structural, metabolic or infectious causes which might have been responsible for the EIEE in these children could be found. The question of electric accident during pregnancy should be considered when documenting the history of children with Ohtahara syndrome

DSFNet: Dual-source and spatiotemporal-feature fusion network for bedside diagnosis of lung injuries with electrical impedance tomography.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a promising tool for non-invasive and real-time lung monitoring, but the data heterogeneity and low spatial resolution limit its ability to diagnose lung injuries. To address these challenges, we propose DSFNet, a dual-source and spatiotemporal-feature fusion network that integrates EIT spatiotemporal boundary voltages and ventilation images to classify four lung conditions, including healthy (HE), pneumothorax (PN), pleural effusion (PE), and pneumonia (PM). The temporal dynamics modeling (TDM) module and multi-head self-attention (MHSA) module are des

Wireless Electromagnetic Generation of miRNA Sponges and Nerve Stimulation by an Adaptable Electrical Scaffold for Repair of Traumatic Brain Injury.

Bioelectronic transduction and microRNA (miRNA) regulation play crucial roles in shaping neuronal cell fate and supporting brain repair. However, clinical progress remains limited due to the lack of tools to perform spatiotemporal regulation of neuronal electrical activity and nonviral gene regulation in vivo. In this study, an adaptable electronic scaffold (AES) that functions both as an antenna and gene transfection agent was developed for neuron miRNA modulation in traumatic brain injury (TBI). The intrinsic properties of AES alleviate inflammation and glial scarring after TBI by suppressin

Energy-dependent cortical injury thresholds in high-frequency transcortical electrical stimulation: a biophysical study in a rat model.

The biophysical determinants of cortical tissue injury during brief, high-frequency transcortical electrical stimulation remain incompletely understood. Traditional safety criteria derived from chronic, low-frequency paradigms emphasize total charge, but whether charge or stimulation energy is the primary predictor of injury under high-frequency conditions-such as those used for intraoperative motor evoked potential (MEP) monitoring-is unclear. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats (8 groups of 4) received monophasic anodal transcortical pulse trains with varying current, pulse duration, repetition n

Physiotherapy care for the long-term sequelae of electrical thermal injury with 12-month follow-up: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Contact electrical injury occurs when current conducted by nerve tissues meets resistance in myofascial tissues, causing widespread thermal burns and eventually radiating neuropathies and movement dysfunctions. While immediate rehabilitation outcomes for injuries occurring with electrical injury have been reported, physiotherapy for the long-term sequelae of electrical injury, including chronic radiculopathy, diminished balance and mobility, and drop attacks, as in this case with 12-month follow-up, has not previously been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old white American

Three Pediatric Cases of Accidental Lip Entrapment, Laceration, and Tongue Injury From Motorized Electric Nail Trimmers.

BACKGROUND Oral and perioral soft tissue injuries are common in early childhood, when oral exploration and imitation of adult grooming coincide with immature motor control. Motorized electric nail trimmers-battery-powered devices with a rotating element behind a small aperture-are commonly available; some reports have described entrapment of the tongue, facial skin, and eyelid in children. This report presents 3 pediatric cases of lip entrapment, laceration, and tongue injury caused by such devices. CASE REPORT Case 1: A 4-year-old girl presented with lower lip entrapment after activating a de

Mechanism of ferroptosis in progressive injury of skeletal muscle caused by high-voltage electrical burns and the intervention effect of uAMC3203.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism underlying progressive skeletal muscle injury following high-voltage electrical burns (HVEB) remains unclear. Therefore, clarifying this mechanism is essential for developing targeted treatment. METHODS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the healthy rats and those with severe muscle contusion were identified using the GSE162565 dataset. Differentially expressed ferroptosis-related genes (DE-FRGs) were extracted, and core genes were screened through bioinformatics analyses. A rat model of HVEB-induced skeletal muscle injury was established, including solve

The effects of mirror therapy with neuromuscular electrical stimulation on motor and sensory functions in patients with common peroneal nerve injury.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the common peroneal nerve often result in significant sensory and motor function loss, severely affecting patients' quality of life. Although existing treatments, including medication and surgery, provide some degree of efficacy, their effectiveness is limited by factors such as tolerance and adverse side effects. METHODS: This study aims to evaluate the effects of a 4-week regimen of mirror therapy combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation on lower limb function, muscle strength, and sensation in patients with common peroneal nerve injuries. The objective is

High-frequency epidural electrical stimulation reduces spasticity and facilitates walking recovery in patients with spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes severe motor and sensory deficits, and there are currently no approved treatments for recovery. Nearly 70% of patients with SCI experience pathological muscle cocontraction and spasticity, accompanied by clinical signs such as patellar hyperreflexia and ankle clonus. The integration of epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of the spinal cord with rehabilitation has substantial potential to improve recovery of motor functions; however, abnormal muscle cocontraction and spasticity may limit the benefit of these interventions and hinder the effectiveness of EES in

Functional electrical stimulation as a tool to restore motor control after spinal cord injury: translation to clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a therapeutic tool that may augment motor recovery after spinal cord injury/disease (SCI). It involves applying an electrical current to muscles and/or peripheral nerves to facilitate functional movements, such as walking and reaching. Despite the potential therapeutic benefits of FES, and the considerable investment into its research and development, FES is not widely used in clinical practice. AREAS COVERED: In this narrative review, we examine this research-to-practice gap. PubMed and Google Scholar were searched using keywords relat

Conductive hydrogel combined with electrical stimulation remodels the microenvironment for nerve regeneration to promote spinal cord injury repair.

The secondary inflammatory response and disruption of electrical signaling following spinal cord injury (SCI) present significant challenges to neurological recovery. Modulating the inflammatory microenvironment and reconstructing the spinal cord's electrophysiological network are essential for effective SCI repair. To address these challenges, we designed a biomimetic 3D soft scaffold composed of phenylboronic acid-modified sodium alginate(Alg-PBA), dopamine-modified methacrylated gelatin(GelMA-DA), and Zn@EGCG modified MXene. This scaffold demonstrated excellent injectability, with an elasti

Retrospective Study to Compare Injury Patterns and Associations in 170 Patients Following Electric Scooter and Bicycle Accidents in Turkey.

BACKGROUND Bicycle use has long been encouraged in urban areas in Turkey as a safe and sustainable mode of transport, supported by dedicated bicycle paths and traffic regulations. However, the recent rise in the popularity of electric scooters (e-scooters) has introduced new safety concerns, leading to injuries among riders, pedestrians, and other road users. This retrospective study compared injury patterns and associated factors in 170 patients involved in e-scooter and bicycle accidents in Eskişehir, Turkey. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 170 patients (54 e-scooter users and 116 b

Daily electric field treatment improves functional outcomes after thoracic contusion spinal cord injury in rats.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can cause permanent loss of sensory, motor, and autonomic functions, with limited therapeutic options available. Low-frequency electric fields with changing polarity have shown promise in promoting axon regeneration and improving outcomes. However, the metal electrodes used previously were prone to corrosion, and their epidural placement limited the penetration of the electric field into the spinal cord. Here, we demonstrate that a thin-film implant with supercapacitive electrodes placed under the dura mater can safely and effectively deliver electric field treatment i

Intermittent Electrical Stimulation-Induced Contractions Accelerate Pro-Regenerative Processes in Muscles With Deep Tissue Injury in Rats.

The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of an intermittent electrical stimulation (IES) paradigm on the healing of deep tissue pressure injury (DTPI). Electrical stimulation has been extensively studied for the treatment of open wounds, often with amplitudes lower than motor threshold. The effect of electrical stimulation in producing palpable muscle contractions on the treatment of DTPI has not been explored. IES was tested in rats with complete spinal cord injury in which a DTPI was subsequently induced. The goals of the study were to investigate: (i) the natural progression of

Comprehensive clinical effect evaluation of low-frequency electrical stimulation combined with proprioception training in sports injury rehabilitation.

Lateral ankle sprains in martial arts athletes frequently leave persistent proprioceptive and neuromuscular deficits. This prospective cohort study evaluated whether adding low-frequency electrical stimulation (LFES) to proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) augments recovery. Five hundred sixty athletes with grade I-II sprains (mean age 22.6 ± 2.7 years) were stratified to LFES + PNF (n=280) or proprioception-only (n=280) for 12 weeks, with assessments at baseline and Weeks 2, 6, and 12. Outcomes included pain (VAS), pressure pain threshold (PPT), ankle range of motion (ROM), joint p
