Cystic or cyst-like malformations of the posterior fossa represent a spectrum of disorders, including the Dandy-Walker malformation, vermian-cerebellar hypoplasia, mega cisterna magna, and arachnoid cyst. Differentiation of these lesions may be difficult with routine cross-sectional imaging; however, an accurate diagnosis is essential for proper treatment planning and genetic counseling. Dandy-Walker malformation is easily diagnosed on the basis of the classic triad: complete or partial agenesis of the vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlarged posterior fossa. Vermian-cer

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an embryological remnant found in 27% of adults. It is a potential right-to-left intracardiac shunt. Shunting may be the result of reversal in the interatrial pressure gradient or abnormal streaming of blood in the right atrium. The pathologic consequences of right-to-left shunting include hypoxemia and paradoxical embolism. PFO may exacerbate preexisting hypoxemia or be its primary cause. Paradoxical embolism through a PFO is well documented. Its role in cryptogenic stroke remains controversial. A PFO may be detected by both invasive and noninvasive techniques.

This study explores the development of the enteric nervous system in avian embryos. Particular emphasis was given to colonization characteristics of neural crest cells present in primitive enteric ganglia. By coculturing neuronal and aneuronal gut of quail and chicken embryos, we investigated if and when neural crest cells in primitive enteric ganglia could detach from these ganglia, migrate, and colonize adjacent chicken gut. Quail neural crest cells were identified using the quail nucleolar marker and the HNK-1 antibody. Enteric neurons were identified using three monoclonal antibodies direc

A case of bilateral congenital conductive deafness with mild auricular deformity is presented, and the anomalous structure deformity of the ossicles was multi-focal in this case, and a previous report indicates that ossicular malformation in the ear with congenital conductive deafness is multi-focal when the external ear is only slightly deformed. Bilateral ossicular reconstruction with replacement of the stapes yielded satisfactory results.

Short Rib Polydactyly Syndrome (SRPS) is a group of rare congenital disorders characterized by polydactyly, short limbs, and short ribs. Infants with type I SRPS (Majewski syndrome) may exhibit dysgenesis of the larynx, which is manifested by epiglottic hypoplasia. Photographic documentation of laryngeal findings obtained at autopsy in an affected infant is provided. To our knowledge, such photographic documentation has not been previously published. Normal laryngeal development is reviewed, based on the Carnegie system of staging. The developmental errors leading to SRPS are thought to occur

The DiGeorge anomaly (DGA) represents a polytopic developmental field defect that can be caused by a number of different chromosomal, mendelian, toxic, or metabolic factors operating in early embryonic life. If the affected field is thought to be focused on either the fourth branchial arch or the third branchial pouch, with variable cephalad or caudad extension, 38 different combinations of malformations can include DiGeorge anomalies, 24 complete and 14 partial DGA, with the constraints that the field defect must be contiguous (involvement of more than one branchial arch or pouch requires inv

Description and discussion of the findings in a five month old infant and a six year old boy, in whom unilateral absence of the pulmonary artery contralateral to the aortic arch could be demonstrated by means of angiocardiography. The infant, having absence of the right pulmonary artery associated with patent ductus arteriosus and obstructive pulmonary vascular disease of the left lung died after recurrent pulmonary infections in acute heart failure. The boy with absence of the left pulmonary artery could be shown to have moderate-severe peripheral stenosis at the origin of the right pulmonary

STUDY QUESTION: What are the unrecognized risk factors for recurrent implantation failure (RIF) as defined in the ESHRE recommendation?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is the strongest predictor for RIF, followed by chronic endometritis (CE), intrauterine adhesions, and BMI.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Advanced age is a well-known risk factor for implantation failure, and the definition of RIF was stratified by age in the 2023 ESHRE recommendation. However, the literature identifies other risk factors, including CE, endometriosis, BMI, endometrial polyps, intrauterine adhesions, hydr

Cor triatriatum dexter (CTD) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly resulting from the persistence of the right valve of the sinus venosus, leading to partial or complete partitioning of the right atrium. It accounts for a minority of congenital heart defects and may present with various clinical features ranging from asymptomatic incidental findings to severe right-sided heart failure. We report the case of a 45-year-old female with longstanding exertional dyspnea, peripheral edema, hepatomegaly, and severe bilateral varicose veins. Abdominal imaging revealed features of hepatic congestion, whe

This study aimed to discuss the clinical implications associated with the absence of the stapedius muscle and concomitant otosclerosis. The causes of mixed hearing loss are presented based on its embryonic development, audiological tests, and high-resolution computed tomography (CT) imaging. This case describes a 35-year-old female patient diagnosed due to bilateral conductive hearing loss. The patient complained of a significant deterioration of hearing and speech understanding lasting for several months. Preoperative audiometric work-up revealed air-bone gap with the presence of Carhart's no

Congenital abnormalities of the kidneys and urinary tract (CAKUT) encompass a spectrum of pathology ranging in severity from incidental findings to marked deviations of anatomic form and function. The imaging appearance of CAKUT generally reflects a deviation from normal embryologic development. Common and uncommon congenital abnormalities of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra are reviewed with an emphasis on the imaging appearance and embryologic origin so that they may be promptly identified and treated when encountered in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to present the comparative analysis of midline congenital upper lip sinuses (MCULS) and nasal dermoids (NDs). The clinical similarity of congenital midline pathologies of the midface was interesting subject for further studies. Therefore, histopathological, and embryological background were also analyzed to verify a hypothesis that NDs and MCULSs are the different variants of the same entity.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 27 surgically treated pediatric cases with the congenital midline sinus of the nose (n = 25) or upper lip (n = 2). Seven children

OBJECTIVE. For this study, we reviewed 56 standard-of-care CT examinations over a timespan of 2 years from patients with superior thoracic inlet venous obstruction and identified eight thoracic collateral pathways for venous blood return to the right heart. We evaluated each pathway individually from an anatomic and a pathophysiologic perspective for a better understanding of how such pathways form and what patterns can be expected. MATERIALS AND METHODS. All 56 patients were scanned according to our standard CT protocol. Images of the thoracic region were acquired in the craniocaudal directio

BACKGROUND: As important as the vertebral ligaments are in maintaining the integrity of the spinal column and protecting the contents of the spinal canal, a single detailed review of their histology and embryology is missing in the literature.
METHODS: A literature search using online search engines was conducted.
RESULTS: Single comprehensive reviews of the histology and embryology of the spinal ligaments are not found in the extant medical literature.
CONCLUSIONS: This review will be useful to those who study or treat patients with pathology of the spine.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is, to a large extent, specific to the human species. Most symptoms are the consequence of the preferential degeneration of the dopamine-synthesizing cells of the mesostriatal-mesocortical neuronal pathway. Reasons for that can be traced back to the evolutionary mechanisms that shaped the dopamine neurons in humans. In vertebrates, dopamine-containing neurons and nuclei do not exhibit homogenous phenotypes. In this respect, mesencephalic dopamine neurons of the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental area are characterized by a molecular combination (tyrosine hydroxylas
