Difficulties in emotion regulation: The role of repetitive negative thinking and metacognitive beliefs.

BACKGROUND: Using the Self-Regulatory Executive Function model as a basis, this study explored whether, in both general population and clinical samples, metacognitive beliefs and repetitive negative thinking (i.e., rumination and worry) are associated with higher levels of emotion dysregulation. METHODS: 395 participants from the general population and 388 outpatients seeking psychological treatment were recruited. Emotion dysregulation, metacognitive beliefs, rumination, worry, anxiety, depression, personality disorders were assessed. ANOVA and Welch's tests, correlation and path analyses we

Patterns of childhood maltreatment predict emotion processing and regulation in emerging adulthood.

Childhood maltreatment is a potent interpersonal trauma associated with dysregulation of emotional processes relevant to the development of psychopathology. The current study identified prospective links between patterns of maltreatment exposures and dimensions of emotion regulation in emerging adulthood. Participants included 427 individuals (48% Male; 75.9% Black, 10.8% White, 7.5% Hispanic, 6% Other) assessed at two waves. At Wave 1, children (10-12 years) from families eligible for public assistance with and without involvement with Child Protective Services took part in a research summer

The Relationship Between Emotion Regulation and Sexual Function and Satisfaction: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual problems are characterized by difficulties in the ability to respond sexually or to obtain sexual pleasure. Their etiology is assumed to be multifactorial, demanding a biopsychosocial treatment approach. Positive sexual experiences involve the dynamic interplay between cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors. Difficulties in emotion identification or impairment in emotion regulation may thus play a pivotal role in the development and maintenance of sexual problems. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a scoping review of the literature on the effects of emotion regulation on sex

Emotion regulation in substance use disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The ability to regulate emotions effectively has been associated with resilience to psychopathology. Individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) have been shown to have higher levels of negative emotionality, with some evidence suggesting impairment in emotion regulation compared with individuals without SUDs. However, no previous attempt has been made to systematically review the literature to assess the magnitude of this difference. We aimed to assess the association between SUD diagnosis and emotion regulation as measured by the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Sc

Altered frontal cortex functioning in emotion regulation and hopelessness in bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Emotion regulation difficulties precipitate and exacerbate acute mood symptoms in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), and contribute to suicidal behavior. However, few studies have examined regional brain responses in explicit emotion regulation during acute BD mood states, or hopelessness, a major suicide risk factor. We assessed brain responses during explicit emotion regulation, and their relationship with hopelessness, in acutely symptomatic and euthymic individuals with BD. METHODS: Functional MRI data were obtained from individuals with BD who were either in acute negati

Emotion Regulation in Couples Affected by Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder.

Female sexual interest/arousal disorder (FSIAD) is associated with psychological, relational, and sexual consequences for affected women, and their romantic partners also suffer repercussions. Prior research suggests that women with FSIAD report more difficulties with emotion regulation than controls. Yet, whether emotion regulation is associated with the psychological, relational, and sexual well-being of both members of affected couples is unknown. Eighty-seven women diagnosed with FSIAD via a clinical interview and their male partners completed standardized measures of difficulties in emoti

The role of emotion regulation in socially anxious children and adolescents: a systematic review.

While numerous studies suggest that emotion dysregulation is important in maintaining social anxiety among adults, the role of emotion regulation in children and adolescents with social anxiety is not yet well understood. In this systematic review, we use the process model of emotion regulation as a framework for understanding emotion regulation in children and adolescents with social anxiety. We performed a systematic literature search in the electronic data bases Medline and PsycINFO. Additional studies were identified by hand search. We identified 683 studies, screened their titles and abst

[Childhood Maltreatment and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury - the Impact of Emotion Regulation].

Childhood Maltreatment and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury - the Impact of Emotion Regulation Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common phenomenon in adolescence. Furthermore, it is often associated with maltreatment during childhood. One factor determining the relation between childhood maltreatment and NSSI is maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. The current study examines this relation in adolescent psychiatric inpatients (n = 97). Adolescents engaging in NSSI present maladaptive strategies in emotion regulation more frequently. In addition, they experienced maltreatment in childhood more

Cognitive Emotion Regulation Strategies in Anxiety and Depression Understood as Types of Personality.

The identification of distinctive and overlapping features of anxiety and depression remains an important scientific problem. Currently, the literature does not allow to determine stable similarities and differences in the use of cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) in anxiety and depression, especially concerning the adaptive strategies. Consequently, the aim of this study was to identify the overlapping and distinctive patterns of CERS use in the recently proposed types of anxiety and depression in a general population. In this dimensional approach, types of anxiety and depression

Maternal Incarceration, Children's Psychological Adjustment, and the Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation.

Children who live in the context of maternal incarceration (MI) are exposed to both general environmental risk and incarceration-specific risk increasing the probability of their developing externalizing and internalizing behaviors problems. Little research has examined the socio-emotional mechanisms that account for the psychological effects of MI. This research examined children's anger and sadness regulation as mediators between environmental and incarceration-specific risk and psychological functioning. Participants were 117 children (60% Black; 52% boys; M age = 9.85 years, SD = 1.65 year
