Empowering South Los Angeles Tenants To Advance Climate Policies That Protect Their Rights.

This article tells the story of vulnerable tenants in South Los Angeles, California, and their work with a community-based organization to advance policies that address climate change while also protecting tenant rights. Climate change is having a disproportionately negative impact on low-income renters in South Los Angeles, where housing is often crowded, unaffordable, and poorly maintained, and extreme heat events can make indoor living unbearable. Cooling mandates and improvements such as building decarbonization can help. Because landlords have used remodeling and renovations as an excuse

Implementation of a patient-focused psychosocial intervention guideline for people with severe mental illness: Cluster-randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial interventions are vital in treating severe mental illness, yet their use remains limited, and patients often lack adequate information about them. Patient-focused versions of clinical guidelines are designed to enhance mental health literacy and inform patients about available treatments, but these resources are underutilized. This study evaluated the impact of implementing a patient-focused psychosocial intervention guideline on empowerment, knowledge, and use of psychosocial interventions among individuals with severe mental illness. METHODS: Multicentre, cluster-ra…

Empowering physicians with health information technology: An empirical investigation in Chinese hospitals.

OBJECTIVE: Few studies examine physicians' use of different features of health information technology (HIT) in relation to their psychological empowerment and stress, especially in China, where many hospitals are being pushed to share digitized medical information. Further, there are mixed findings about the impact of HIT on stress, with some studies suggesting that HIT increases stress and others suggesting no effect. Hence, there is a need for a nuanced view of HITs to incorporate different features, regions, and outcomes. This work seeks to extend the existing body of knowledge on HIT by as…

"We Are a Powerful Movement": Evaluation of an Endometrial Cancer Education Program for Black Women.

BACKGROUND: U.S. Black women with endometrial cancer (EC) have a 90% higher mortality rate than White women, driven in part by advanced stage at diagnosis. Black women have expressed reasons for care-seeking delay: misattribution of postmenopausal bleeding, symptom endurance, and community silence regarding vaginal bleeding. OBJECTIVES: In this community-based participatory research study, we adapted, implemented, and evaluated an education program addressing these factors. METHODS: We adapted an evidenced-based education curriculum-Community Empowerment Partners (CEPs©)-using Public Health …

Reproductive Health and Bodily Integrity in Tanzania.

Several policy initiatives support the empowerment of women to improve their reproductive health. Little is known, however, about the inverse effect that reproductive health might have on women's empowerment. Women are pressured to conform to their reproductive role, and an inability to do so might affect their empowerment, including control over their own body. Using a panel dataset of 504 married women in Northern Tanzania, we find that women who experienced a pregnancy loss show more tolerant views of partner violence and that child mortality lowers their perceived control over the sexual r…

The efficacy of genetic counselling for familial colorectal cancer. A randomised clinical trial.

Genetic counselling (GC) for familial colorectal cancer (fCRC) has been previously shown to improve outcomes such as emotional distress and screening adherence. This is the first randomised clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of GC for fCRC. We included individuals affected or at-risk for fCRC (Lynch syndrome, APC-associated polyposis, other risk-associated pathogenic variants and clinically defined fCRC). Participants were randomised to (1) standard care or (2) standard care and genetic counselling. Measures include empowerment, anxiety, depression, knowledge, emotional distress, perceive…

Who are the "vanguard" women? Strategies for identifying women going against economic participation norms across 49 low- and middle-income countries.

Women's empowerment and poverty alleviation are two key factors for successful and equitable international development. Norms surrounding women's economic participation and economic agency change over time, with some individuals achieving economic empowerment earlier than others. These "vanguard" women represent the leading edge of change. The objective of this study is to discuss and compare methodological strategies for creating a measure that captures the extent to which a woman's actions exceed community norms regarding economic participation and agency. We refer to this measure as the "Va…

Cognitive and affective outcomes of genetic counselling in the Netherlands at group and individual level: a personalized approach seems necessary.

We performed a large outcome study at group and individual level in which the goals of genetic counselling were operationalized into cognitive and affective outcomes: empowerment, perceived personal control and anxiety. We then examined which socio-demographic and clinical variables were associated with changes in these outcomes. Data came from 1479 counselees who completed questionnaires (GCOS-18, PPC and STAI) at three time points: before the start of genetic counselling, after the first consultation and after the results of genetic counselling were disclosed. Results showed that at group le…

Empowering Patients With Spinal Cord Injury: A Guide to Online Resources for Nurses.

A person who experiences a spinal cord injury (SCI) is often faced with significant alterations to nearly every aspect of their day-to-day life. Providing patients with SCI and their families all the key education during an inpatient rehabilitation stay is challenging for nurses due to short inpatient stays. Rehabilitation nurses and other clinicians must prioritize teaching the information and skills most essential for a safe discharge. After transitioning back into the community, people with SCI will have significant ongoing needs for trustworthy health information that will help them restor

Agency in Family Planning: A Scoping Review of the Measurement of Agency in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

Improving women's agency in family planning is an integral component of empowerment, requiring culturally relevant, reliable, and valid measures. Measuring agency-action towards the achievement of self-determined goals-is key to tracking progress as highlighted by its inclusion in the Sustainable Development Goals. Yet, agency measurement within low- and middle-income contexts has all too often involved applying measures developed and tested in high-income contexts, and conceptual confusion has also led to both overlapping measures and those that omit key facets of agency. To examine the const…

HIV Awareness and Stigma Reduction Through Immersive Theatrical Drag Storytelling: A Mixed-Methods Pilot Study of Community Members in Western United States.

HIV stigma remains a barrier to testing, prevention, and health care access among LGBTQ+ communities. Theatrical drag storytelling is a promising, culturally relevant approach to HIV awareness, stigma reduction, and prevention. A convergent mixed-methods pre-post survey design was used. Of 70 adults attending a community theatrical performance, 51 completed matched preperformance and postperformance surveys assessing HIV knowledge, stigma, testing, and empowerment. An open-ended question explored participant experiences. Among 51 matched participants, 94.1% perceived HIV stigma and 41.2% had n…

"I never realized how hard recovery is." A quasi-experimental evaluation of a youth participatory action research project for opioid prevention.

Youth participatory action research (YPAR) has been effectively used for substance use prevention. Yet, YPAR has not been evaluated for opioids, which negatively impact individuals and communities across the United States. The current study evaluated an opioid-focused YPAR project. YPAR participants (n = 28) completed a pre- and post-survey capturing psychological empowerment and opioid knowledge and behavior. A non-YPAR comparison group (n = 18) provided post-survey data. Mean comparisons were conducted to identify changes among participants and between intervention and comparison groups. YPA…
