The anthelmintic activity of the extracts obtained from Luxemburgia octandra was evaluated naturally infected mice with Aspiculuris tetraptera and Vampirolepis nana. The leaves extracts were obtained through maceration and given to the animals by gavage in doses 8 and 20 mg/kg during three days. The ethanolic and ethyl acetate extracts presented significant increase of the V. nana elimination, but did not present the nematicide effect against A. tetraptera.

A case of pelvic inflammatory disease in a sexually non-active 13 year old girl is described, with evidence of pinworms as the cause. Albendazole treatment cleared the infestation but the patient suffered subsequent bouts of lower abdominal pain. The literature is reviewed regarding abdominal pathology associated with ectopic migration of pinworms.

Longitudinal pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) infection rates were estimated at a mass screening for first-grade children during 1991-1996; children were provided medication at the screening. This campaign was able to decrease the infection rates for the 1991 cohort from 16.3% to 0.6%. A case-control study was further conducted for the investigation of risk factors among fourth-graders. Since 1955, when sanitary conditions were poor, the incidence of intestinal parasitism has steadily decreased. Similarly, the number of requests for fecal examinations by physicians has also decreased. However, in our hospital, the incidence of parasites detected in fecal material has been increasing since 1994, regardless of the decreasing number of stool exams performed. An unusual over-gravid female of Enterobius vermicularis was recovered from a 15-month old child by cello-tape anal swab. The patient resided in Inchon and complained of severe anal itching. The worm measured 7.8 mm in length and 0.5 mm in width, and retained typical morphologic features of E. vermicularis such as cephalic alae and a sharply pointed posterior end. Bartholin gland abscesses are typically caused by bacterial agents. Abscesses induced by Enterobius vermicularis are exceptional. We report, here, the case of a 27-year-old woman, whose histopathological examination of the Bartholin gland cyst confirmed the presence of E. vermicularis eggs in the lumen of the cyst.

OBJECTIVE: Parasites and plant seeds may both be found in appendectomy specimens. Each plant seed has a different appearance and can thus exhibit wide variations under the microscope. Fragmented seeds may histologically mimic parasites. The differential diagnosis between seeds and parasites can be challenging in such cases. BACKGROUND: Human infection with Enterobius vermicularis occurs worldwide. The most common clinical manifestation of a pinworm infection is an itchy anal region. We conducted a two-year (2019-2020) longitudinal study in Jiangsu Province, China to analyze risk factors of pinworm infection and evaluate the effect of behavior change communication-based (BCC-based) interventions in preschool children. The positive rate of pinworm infection was higher in private preschool (2%) than in public preschool (0.24%). Poor sanitation behaviors were risk factors among private preschool children. Appendicitis is the most common cause of acute abdomen leading to invasive surgery. While the mainstay treatment of appendicitis is appendicectomy, there are a few conditions where conservative medical treatment cures the patient. One such condition is intestinal parasitosis, where only pharmacotherapy causes remission. Although Enterobius vermicularis is the commonest parasite in this regard, others such as Schistosoma, Taenia, Ascaris and Trichuris can also be found.
