OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of long-term desmopressin therapy in enuretic patients on the levels of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) during and after the end of therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study comprised 25 outpatients (18 boys and seven girls) aged 8-12 years at the start of therapy and 12-16 years at the end. The morning (08.00 hours) plasma ADH level was determined before treatment (T0) with desmopressin and 2 years after (T1) ending the therapy. Seven of the 25 patients evaluated had monosymptomatic (simple enuresis, SE) and 18 had other symptoms (complex enuresis, CE). RESULTS:…

[Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and urination].

The role played by antidiuretic hormone in enuresis remains controversial. As a symptomatic treatment, desmopressin (DDAVP) has already proved to be a useful addition to the measures applied against this condition.

Selected sleep disturbances in school children reported by parents: prevalence, interrelationships, behavioral correlates and parental attributions.

Epidemiological, behavioral and etiological variables related to sleep disturbances were investigated in a survey of 1695 children in Grades 1 to 12 from 11 randomly selected schools. Sleep-walking, nightmares and sleep-talking were strongly associated with each other as well as to a family history of sleep-walking. Enuresis, however, was not related to the other sleep variables. Socioeconomic status of father was weakly related to enuresis and sleep-talking but not to sleep-walking or nightmares. Gender was not related to any of the sleep disturbances. The behavioral variables, physical activ…

Clinical experience with desmopressin: efficacy and safety in central diabetes insipidus and other conditions.

Because of its selective antidiuretic activity, desmopressin is recognized as the drug of choice for central diabetes insipidus. Compared with previously available treatments, it has a greatly enhanced therapeutic profile, allowing more specific antidiuresis without adverse reactions. Its selective antidiuretic activity is used with advantage in the treatment of nocturnal enuresis and as a diagnostic test of tubular function. Desmopressin is available for intranasal and parenteral administration; antidiuretic doses range from 10 to 40 micrograms intranasally and from 2 to 4 micrograms intraven…
