Coexistence of FMRFAMIDE-like and LHRH-like immunoreactivity in the terminal nerve and forebrain of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The coexistence of molluscan cardioexcitatory neuropeptide (FMRFAMIDE) and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) was studied in the n … major source of both FMRFAMIDE- and LHRH-ir within the forebrain. A number of fibers run along the ependyma of the ventricular system and seem to terminate here; this is particularly evident in the median eminence and infundibular stalk. In the big brown bat, there seems to exist a continuum of FMRFAMIDE- and LHRH-ir throughout the tn and those structures …

EXPERIMENTAL HYDROCEPHALUS.

Internal hydrocephalus can be produced experimentally by injecting a foreign substance into the ventricles. In these experiments, aleuronat, a granular, insoluble material, has caused an acute inflammatory reaction, characterized in the first week by an exudate consisting largely of polynuclear leucocytes. Later the picture is one of a chronic process; polynuclear cells are replaced by lymphoid and large mononuclear cells and there is proliferation of the connective tissue in the choroid plexus. Proliferation of the ependyma occurs in the first week but becomes more advanced in the second and …

A multicenter retrospective study of heterogeneous tissue aggregates obstructing ventricular catheters explanted from patients with hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND: Implantation of ventricular catheters (VCs) to drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a standard approach to treat hydrocephalus. VC … 24%, prevalent lymphocytic inflammation in 29%, and foreign body giant cell reactions in 5% and no ependyma. CONCLUSION: Our data show that age of the first surgery and length of time a VC is implanted are factors that influence the degree of VC obstruction. The tissue aggregates obstructing VCs are composed predominantly of astrocytes and macrophages; m …

Embryonic development of the bovine pineal gland (Bos taurus) during prenatal life (30 to 135 days of gestation).

The ontogenesis of the pineal gland of 30 bovine embryos (Bos taurus) has been analysed from 30 until 135 days of gestation by means of optical microscopy and immunohistochemical techniques. For this study, the specimens were grouped into three stages in accordance with the most relevant histological characteristics: Stage 1 (30 to 64 days of prenatal development); Stage 2 (70 to 90 days) and Stage 3 (106 to 135 days). In the cow, it is from 30 days of gestation that the first glandular outline becomes differentiated from the diencephalic ependyma of the third ventricle. This differentiation i…

Meningeal melanocytoma of the brain and oculodermal melanocytosis (nevus of Ota): case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Meningeal melanocytomas are rare benign pigmented tumors of meningeal melanocytes. Nevus of Ota is a melanocytic pigmentation of the sclera and the skin adjacent to the eye. We report a rare case of parietal convexity meningeal melanocytoma associated with ipsilateral mucocutaneous melanosis and review the literature. METHODS: A 17-year-old man presented with headache and blindness. There was left scalp and facial mucocutaneous melanosis. During surgery, speckled hyperpigmentation was seen in all layers of the scalp, bone, dura, and even ependyma. Pathologic examination of the tum…

Alzheimer disease: curly fibers and tangles in organs other than brain.

The filamentous brain lesions that define Alzheimer disease (AD) consist of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Undulated pathologic … oid showing striking morphological similarity to curly fibers and/or tangles accumulate not only in ependymal layer and in epithelial cells of choroid plexus, but also in several other organs (e.g. liver, pancreas, ovary, testis, thyroid) in AD. The ependyma, choroid plexus, and various organs of 39 autopsy cases were analyzed. In search of curly fiber and …

Interaction of the transplanted olfactory placode with the optic stalk and the diencephalon in Xenopus laevis embryos.

The effect of olfactory placode transplantation on the differentiation of the optic vesicle and stalk has been studied in Xenopus laevis emb … ity, connected by a foramen to the third ventricle. The ventricle was lined by a mitotically active ependymal layer. In the second group the host embryos were deprived of two-thirds of the optic vesicle. In these animals we observed the development of a round mass of nervous tissue connected by a peduncle to the diencephalic wall. A ventricle lined by epen …

Augmenting AMPA receptor signaling after spinal cord injury increases ependymal-derived neural stem/progenitor cell migration and promotes functional recovery.

Ependymal cells in the adult spinal cord become activated after spinal cord injury (SCI), gaining stem/progenitor cell properties. Although growing evidence has implicated these cells as potential players in the endogenous repair process after injury, their activation to a stem-cell-like state is transient and insufficient for adequate regeneration. Moreover, the drivers of their activation state remain largely unknown. Previous work suggested that AMPA receptors (AMPARs) regulate cultured ependymal-derived neural stem/progenitor cells (epNSPCs). In this study, we identified an AMPAR-dependent…

TRIP6 functions in brain ciliogenesis.

TRIP6, a member of the ZYXIN-family of LIM domain proteins, is a focal adhesion component. Trip6 deletion in the mouse, reported here, reveals a function in the brain: ependymal and choroid plexus epithelial cells are carrying, unexpectedly, fewer and shorter cilia, are poorly differentiated, and the mice develop hydrocephalus. TRIP6 carries numerous protein interaction domains and its functions require homodimerization. Indeed, TRIP6 disruption in vitro (in a choroid plexus epithelial cell line), via RNAi or inhibition of its homodimerization, confirms its function in ciliogenesis. Using supe…

MT1-MMP deficiency leads to defective ependymal cell maturation, impaired ciliogenesis, and hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus is characterized by abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricular cavity. The circulation of CSF in brain ventricles is controlled by the coordinated beating of motile cilia at the surface of ependymal cells (ECs). Here, we show that MT1-MMP is highly expressed in olfactory bulb, rostral migratory stream, and the ventricular system. Mice deficient for membrane-type 1-MMP (MT1-MMP) developed typical phenotypes observed in hydrocephalus, such as dome-shaped skulls, dilated ventricles, corpus callosum agenesis, and astrocyte hypertrophy, during the first 2 we…

Neuroendoscopic Approach to Intracranial Ependymal Cysts.

BACKGROUND: Intraparenchymal cysts without communication to the ventricles or the subarachnoid space are named ependymal or epithelial cysts. The estimated ratio of their incidence compared with arachnoid cysts is 1:10. Neurologic deficit can occur when the cyst exerts mass effect on its surroundings. We evaluated the success rate of endoscopic fenestration of intracranial ependymal cysts. METHODS: Our prospectively maintained endoscopy database was screened for all cases of ependymal cysts. The charts were retrospectively reviewed for symptoms, surgery, postoperative course, and complication…

Clinical analyses and short-term prognoses of neonates with subependymal cysts.

Twenty-one neonates with subependymal cysts detected by neurosonography soon after birth were prospectively examined. The clinical and cranial sonographic findings were evaluated with respect to short-term prognosis. The prognosis was poor in 6 patients with congenital viral infection (4 with cytomegalovirus infection and 2 with rubella infection). Five patients also had neurodevelopmental abnormalities (2 with neonatal epileptic seizures, 2 with chromosomal abnormalities, and 1 with lissencephaly). The remaining 10 patients had normal psychomotor development. The incidence of congenital viral…

Magnetic resonance imaging characteristics of ependymal tuberculosis in patients with intracranial tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of ependymal tuberculosis in patients with intracranial tuberculosis. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 21 patients diagnosed with ependymal tuberculosis, defined as direct ventricular involvement caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, between July 2019 and May 2024. Craniocerebral MRI findings were reviewed, and the imaging characteristics and their temporal progression were systematically evaluated. RESULTS: Two distinct MRI patterns of ependymal tuberculosis were identified:…

Endoscopic diagnosis of an MRI-occult, low-grade glioma with ependymal dissemination.

A 21-year-old man presented with triventricular hydrocephalus due to a tectal mass. He underwent an endoscopic third ventriculostomy, and multiple nodules were identified at the floor of the third ventricle intraoperatively. Surgical pathology of one of these lesions demonstrated that the tissue represented a low-grade astrocytoma. The case highlights the existing potential of neuroendoscopy to reveal neuroimaging-occult lesions, in spite of the significant advances of MRI. Furthermore, the combination of the age of the patient, the nonenhancing MRI appearance, and the multifocality of the les

Two types of brain lesions in Wernicke's encephalopathy.

Analysis of 46 cases of Wernicke's encephalopathy showed that the pathological processes in the thalamus and inferior olives were clearly different from those in the mammillary bodies and the subependymal structures along the third and fourth ventricles and the aqueduct. The latter regions showed a progressive destruction of the neuropil with severe endothelial swelling and a definite sparing of the neurones. In the thalamus and inferior olives, by contrast, the reverse picture was found with neuronal disintegration, sparing of the neuropil, and a mild endothelial swelling. The disintegrating …
