[Abnormal changes in erythrocyte membrane proteins in hereditary spherocytosis and their relation to clinical and biological aspects of the disease].

BACKGROUND: In the present paper we report a study of 20 patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) performed with the aim of provide further information on the electrophoretic abnormalities of red blood cell (RBC) membrane proteins and their putative relationship with the clinical, biological and genetic aspects of the disease. METHODS: General hematological parameters, reticulocyte count, osmotic fragility test and erythrocyte morphology analysis, were performed by routine procedures. Membrane proteins of erythrocyte were analyzed by SDS-polyacrylamide gradient gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAG

The Relationship Between Pan Immune-Inflammation Value and Disease Activity in Ankylosing Spondylitis.

OBJECTIVES: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the axial skeleton and peripheral joints, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced function. Monitoring disease activity is crucial, but no specific laboratory markers reflect disease activity in AS. This study evaluated the relationship between pan immune-inflammation value (PIIV) and disease activity in AS. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included patients with AS fulfilling the modified New York classification criteria. Disease activity was assessed using the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index

Comparison of blood parameters between periodontitis patients and healthy participants: A cross-sectional hematological study.

BACKGROUND: Bacteria and their products involved in periodontitis evoke an immunoinflammatory response in the host tissue. Inflammatory diseases, such as periodontitis, are often not just a local event, but may have systemic ramifications, including elevations in the numbers of circulating leukocytes, acute-phase proteins and oxidative stress markers. It is now emerging that also erythrocytes are affected by chronic inflammatory diseases. This phenomenon, named "anemia of inflammation," is not caused by marrow deficiencies or other diseases. The present study aimed to assess whether there was

The significance of spleen size in children with sickle cell anemia.

It is well established that splenic dysfunction occurs in early childhood in sickle cell anemia (SCA), although the determinants and consequences of splenic injury are not fully understood. In this study, we examined spleen size and splenic function in 100 children with SCA aged 0-16 years at King's College Hospital in London. Spleen size was assessed by abdominal ultrasound (US) and splenic function by pitted red blood cells (PIT counts). In our cohort, 5.6% of children aged 6-10 years and 19.4% of children aged 11-16 years had no visible spleen on US (autosplenectomy). Splenomegaly was commo

The Presence of Nucleated Red Blood Cells as an Indicator for Increased Mortality and Morbidity in Burn Patients.

Nucleated red blood cells (NRBCs) have been studied in critically ill and injured patients as a predictor of increased in-hospital mortality and poor clinical outcomes. While prior studies have demonstrated the prognostic power of NRBCs in the critical patient, there has been a paucity of literature available describing their value as a prognostic indicator in the severely burned patient. This retrospective observational study was conducted from 2012 to 2017. Inclusion criteria for this study included all burn patients with total body surface area > 10% who were aged ≥ 15 years. Demographic an

Increased calcium uptake in the red cells of unsplenectomized patients with hereditary spherocytosis: significant contribution of reticulocytosis.

The presence of abnormal calcium (Ca) metabolism in the red cells of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) patients has long been in dispute. Thus, to clarify the discrepancies of experimental results published previously, Ca metabolism in the red cells was investigated in 12 unsplenectomized and 6 splenectomized HS patients. A marked increase of Ca uptake was observed in the ATP-depleted red cells of the unsplenectomized HS patients. The increased red cell Ca uptake was normalized after splenectomy in the same HS patients. The extent of increased Ca uptake was well correlated to the degree of reticul

[Relationships between hemopoiesis and peripheral blood counts in untreated and 32P-treated patients with polycythaemia vera (author's transl)].

The composition of the hemopoiesis was determined in iliac crest biopsies of 51 patients with polycythaemia vera. There was a good correlation between thrombopoiesis and thrombocytes and, to a minor degree also between erythropoiesis and erythrocytes in untreated patients as well as between granulopoiesis and granulocytes in 32P-treated patients. In patients with normal blood counts there existed no correlation between the bone marrow and the blood counts within smaller limits of the cell count. Histomorphometric analysis shows no difference either between untreated and 32P-treated patients or

Research progress on glycolytic reprogramming in ophthalmic diseases.

OBJECTIVES: More than 20% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients have comorbid fibromyalgia (FM+), which may elevate DAS28-ESR (disease activity score 28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate) and other indices, resulting in challenges to assess inflammatory disease activity. Although several reports indicate that elevated patient global assessment (PATGL) may elevate DAS28 in the absence of inflammatory activity, less information is available concerning the other three components, tender joint count (TJC), swollen joint count (SJC), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), to possibly elevate DAS28

A challenging laboratory case due to inappropriate sampling through an antiseptic barrier cap.

Antiseptic barrier caps are currently used as novel tools in critically ill patients to achieve sterility of the blood sampling site and to prevent central line-associated bloodstream infections in the intensive care unit. A clinical and laboratory case of analytical interferences on erythrocytes, platelets and leukocytes due to the isopropyl alcohol contained in the antiseptic barrier cap is described. An aged man with history of heart valve disease was monitored for hematological parameters after surgery of mitral and tricuspid valve replacement. Leukocyte scattergrams changes on the Sysmex

Increased leukocytes in infants with intraventricular hemorrhage.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and cystic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) with changes in the peripheral blood count. Total peripheral leukocytes, absolute neutrophils, platelets, and nucleated erythrocytes from the first 3 days after birth were compared in very-low-birth-weight infants with (n = 100) and without (n = 388) IVH and cystic PVL (n = 16). After controlling for potential confounding variables, infants with IVH had an increase in total leukocytes and absolute neutrophils and a reduction in nucleated erythr

Differentiation between septic arthritis and transient synovitis of the hip in children with clinical prediction algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Differentiation between septic arthritis and transient synovitis of the hip in children can be difficult. Kocher et al. recently developed a clinical prediction algorithm for septic arthritis based on four clinical variables: history of fever, non-weight-bearing, an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of >or=40 mm/hr, and a serum white blood-cell count of >12000/mm(3) (>12.0 x 10(9)/L). The purpose of this study was to apply this clinical algorithm retrospectively to determine its predictive value in our patient population. METHODS: A retrospective review was performed to identify all

Elevated Nucleated Red Blood Cells at Birth Predict Hemodynamically Significant Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

We hypothesized that postnatal absolute nucleated red blood cell (aNRBC) counts would be elevated in premature infants with hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), reflecting intrauterine hypoxia. PDA severity was assessed and categorized echocardiographically. aNRBC counts were significantly correlated with ductal severity (Pearson correlation: P = .007). At the extremes, aNRBC levels were 3770 (728, 6015) hemodynamically significant PDA vs 865 (483, 2528) closed ductus.

The relationship between haematological indices, serum gamma-glutamyl transferase and glutamate dehydrogenase, visual hepatic damage and worm burden in cattle infected with Fasciola gigantica.

The association between visual hepatic damage, burden of Fasciola gigantica, serum levels of gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) and glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) is described from an abattoir study of 70 cattle in the Philippines. In another abattoir study of 60 cattle, the relationship between burden of F. gigantica and haematological indices was investigated. The degree of visual hepatic damage and burden of F. gigantica were significantly positively related to levels of GGT and GLDH. Red blood cell counts and packed cell volume were significantly inversely related to worm burden, but animals

Use of red blood cell transfusions in terminally ill cancer patients admitted to a palliative care unit.

Anemia is often associated with neoplastic disorders. Blood transfusions are used to alleviate the discomfort of anemic cancer patients. Of 246 terminally ill cancer patients admitted to our palliative care unit from October 1991 to December 1993 (128 women and 118 men), 31 patients (12.6%) (17 men and 14 women; age, 69.5 +/- 12 years) received on average 2.8 units of packed red blood cells (PRBCs) (range, 2-7 units/patient) in 35 separate admissions. PRBCs were transfused in the presence of low hemoglobin (Hb) levels ( < or = 8 g/dL) and/or severe fatigue or dyspnea. Pre-transfusion performan

The percentage of dense red cells does not predict incidence of sickle cell painful crisis.

To test the hypothesis that the tendency of hemoglobin S (HbS) to polymerize within cells is the major determinant of the incidence of vaso-occlusive episodes, we have examined the effect of the percentage of dense cells (as measured by Percoll-Stractan continuous density gradient centrifugation) on the frequency of painful crises in a group of 36 patients with sickle cell disease. No correlation was found between the percentage of dense cells and admissions for crisis. Among the patients with known alpha-gene status (n = 25), the strong correlation between decreased dense cells and alpha-thal
