Multilevel auditory and cognitive processing in post-stroke aphasia: associations with language performance using ABR, LLR, and P300: a cross-sectional observational study.

BACKGROUND: Aphasia following stroke is primarily characterized by language impairment; however, accumulating evidence suggests that deficits in auditory and cognitive processing may also contribute to impaired language function. Auditory evoked potentials provide objective markers of neural processing across subcortical, cortical, and cognitive levels and may help clarify the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying post-stroke aphasia. OBJECTIVES: To investigate multilevel auditory processing and its relationship with language performance in individuals with post-stroke aphasia using Audito

EEG measures for clinical research in major vascular cognitive impairment: recommendations by an expert panel.

Vascular contribution to cognitive impairment (VCI) and dementia is related to etiologies that may affect the neurophysiological mechanisms regulating brain arousal and generating electroencephalographic (EEG) activity. A multidisciplinary expert panel reviewed the clinical literature and reached consensus about the EEG measures consistently found as abnormal in VCI patients with dementia. As compared to cognitively unimpaired individuals, those VCI patients showed (1) smaller amplitude of resting state alpha (8-12 Hz) rhythms dominant in posterior regions; (2) widespread increases in amplitud

Assessing Brain Neurophysiology in COVID-19 Patients With Prolonged Cognitive Fatigue: A Comparison With Persistent Post-concussion Symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Brain fog and cognitive dysfunction are frequently reported in post-viral fatigue syndromes such as long COVID, yet these symptoms remain challenging to quantify objectively. Notably, many individuals with long COVID describe clinical features that overlap with those observed in patients with persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS), including cognitive fatigue, exertional intolerance, mood disturbances, visual and balance problems, headaches, and neck pain. Emerging evidence suggests that PPCS is associated with distinct electrophysiological abnormalities, including altered fu

Electrophysiological basis of reading related phonological impairment in Chinese speakers with schizophrenia: An ERP study.

It has been reported in alphabetic languages that individuals with schizophrenia showed language-related cognitive impairments including phonological deficits, which were in turn associated with clinical symptoms such as auditory hallucinations and thought disorders. To date, however, the phonological deficits involved in schizophrenia in Chinese and its neural basis have not been well established. In order to establish such a relationship we conducted a behavioral study using lexical tone judgment and digit span tasks as well as an event-related potential (ERP) study with an auditory oddball

Novelty processing depends on medial temporal lobe structures.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of the present study was to identify the role of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) in the detection and later processing of novelty. METHODS: Twenty-one epilepsy patients with unilateral MTL resection (10 left-sided; 11 right-sided) and 26 matched healthy controls performed an adapted visual novelty oddball task. In this task two streams of stimuli were presented on the left and right of fixation while the patients' electroencephalogram was measured. The participants had to respond to infrequent target stimuli, while ignoring frequent standard, and infrequent novel stimuli t

Post-Saccadic Face Processing Is Modulated by Pre-Saccadic Preview: Evidence from Fixation-Related Potentials.

Humans actively sample their environment with saccadic eye movements to bring relevant information into high-acuity foveal vision. Despite being lower in resolution, peripheral information is also available before each saccade. How the pre-saccadic extrafoveal preview of a visual object influences its post-saccadic processing is still an unanswered question. The current study investigated this question by simultaneously recording behavior and fixation-related brain potentials while human subjects made saccades to face stimuli. We manipulated the relationship between pre-saccadic "previews" and

Hippocampal intracerebral evoked potentials as a marker of its functionality in drug-resistant epilepsy.

OBJECTIVES: To assess hippocampal function during stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) investigations through the study of the medial temporal lobe event-related potential (ERP) MTL-P300. METHODS: We recorded the MTL-P300 during a visual oddball task, using hippocampal electrodes implanted for SEEG in 71 patients, in a preoperative epilepsy investigation. The presence of an MTL-P300 and its amplitude were correlated with hippocampal involvement during seizures and memory function. RESULTS: Analysis using ROC curves revealed that an MTL-P300 amplitude below -46 µV, has a specificity of 93.3% i

ChatBCI-Assist: An Intent-Based P300 Speller With A Locally Deployed LLM and Adaptive Stopping Strategy Enabling Record Online Spelling Performance.

P300-based speller brain computer interfaces (BCIs) provide promising communication solutions for individuals with severe motor impairments, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, existing P300 spellers are constrained by slow typing speed and limited efficiency. Here, we present ChatBCI-Assist, an intent-based P300 speller that integrates a locally deployed large language model (LLM), fine-tuned for the task at hand, and a graphical user interface (GUI) designed for efficient message composition, while incorporating an adaptive stopping strategy for key selection, to

Effects of TDCS dosage on working memory in healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been found to improve working memory (WM) performance in healthy participants following a single session. However, results are mixed and the overall effect size is small. Interpretation of these results is confounded by heterogeneous study designs, including differences in tDCS dose (current intensity) and sham conditions used. AIMS: We systematically investigated the effect of tDCS dose on working memory using behavioural and neurophysiological outcomes. METHODS: In a single-blind parallel group design, 100 participants were ran

A parietal-to-frontal shift in the P300 is associated with compensation of tactile discrimination deficits in late middle-aged adults.

Tactile perception declines with age on both behavioral and neurophysiological levels. Less well understood is how neurophysiological changes relate to tactile discrimination performance in middle adulthood. A tactile discrimination task was conducted while ERPs were measured in three groups of healthy adults aged 20 to 66 years. Accuracy was lowest in late middle adulthood (56-66 years) while somatosensory ERP components (P50, N70, P100, N140) were comparable across age groups. The cognitive P300 revealed age-related differences in scalp distribution typical for older adults to already be pre

Limbic hyperactivity associated to verbal memory deficit in schizophrenia.

In schizophrenia there seems to be an inefficient activation of prefrontal and hippocampal regions. Patients tend to show worse cognitive performance in functions subserved by those regions as compared to healthy controls in spite of higher regional activation. However, the association between activation abnormalities and cognitive deficits remains without being understood. In the present study, we compared cerebral perfusion using single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) in patients and controls to study the association between activation patterns and cognitive performance in this disease. Role of basal ganglia circuits in resisting interference by distracters: a swLORETA study.

BACKGROUND: The selection of task-relevant information requires both the focalization of attention on the task and resistance to interference from irrelevant stimuli. Both mechanisms rely on a dorsal frontoparietal network, while focalization additionally involves a ventral frontoparietal network. The role of subcortical structures in attention is less clear, despite the fact that the striatum interacts significantly with the frontal cortex via frontostriatal loops. One means of investigating the basal ganglia's contributions to attention is to examine the features of P300 components (i.e. amp

Target consolidation under high temporal processing demands as revealed by MEG.

We investigated the nature of resource limitations during visual target processing by imposing high temporal processing demands on the cognitive system. This was achieved by embedding target stimuli into rapid-serial-visual-presentation-streams (RSVP). In RSVP streams, it is difficult to report the second of two targets (T2) if the second follows the first (T1) within 500 ms. This effect is known as the attentional blink (AB). For the AB to occur, it is essential that T1 is followed by a mask, as without such a stimulus, the AB is significantly attenuated. Usually, it is thought that T1 proces

The assessment of the impact of antiepileptic drugs on cognitive functions via N-200/P-300 potentials and neuropsychological measures.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of antiseizure medications (ASMs) on cognitive functions have not been fully elucidated. The primary aim of this study was to demonstrate potential changes in cognitive functions in patients diagnosed with epilepsy from both neuropsychological and electrophysiological perspectives. Our secondary objective was to assess the effects of administered ASM on cognitive functions by categorizing patients into different monotherapy and polytherapy groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, prospective patient registry study was conducted between May 2022 and June 2023. The

Visual P300s in long-term abstinent chronic alcoholics.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of reduced P3b amplitudes in chronic alcoholics and individuals at risk for developing alcoholism suggest that the P3b may be an endophenotypic marker for alcoholism. If this is the case, then long-term abstinent alcoholics (LTAAs) should exhibit reduced P3b amplitudes. Thus far, P3b studies on chronic alcoholics have focused primarily on samples with relatively short-term abstinence (less than 15 months). This study examines the amplitude and latency of the P3b and P3a event-related brain electrical components in LTAAs compared with normal controls (NCs) and whether these

The P300 in middle cerebral artery strokes or hemorrhages: Outcome predictions and source localization.

OBJECTIVES: There are no reliable outcome predictors for severely impaired patients suffering from large infarctions or hemorrhages within the territory of the middle cerebral artery. This study investigated whether the amplitude of the event-related potential (ERP) component P300 predicts if a patient will be transferred to the next stage of rehabilitation (positive outcome) or to a nursing home (negative outcome). The second goal was to look for lesion locations determining the generation of the P300 amplitude. METHODS: Forty-seven patients performed an auditory oddball task to elicit the P
