Cortical evoked potentials on stimulation of pudendal nerve in women.

Somatosensory evoked potentials were recorded in five normal women on percutaneous stimulation of the pudendal nerve. A consistent response was obtained over the scalp 2 cm behind the Cz electroencephalographic recording site. The latency of onset of this response had a mean value of 33 msec, and the mean latency of the first positive peak was 39.6 msec. This test has potential clinical value in the evaluation of patients with bowel, bladder, or sexual dysfunction when a neurologic causation is suspected.

Visual evoked potentials in schizophrenia. Intensity effects and hemispheric asymmetry.

Visual evoked potentials (VEP) to different flash intensities were recorded at a central site (Cz) plus at homologous temporal and occipital locations in normal and unmedicated schizophrenic subjects. Schizophrenic patients showed an hemisphere asymmetry of the P100-N120 peak-trough amplitude with smaller left but larger right hemisphere amplitudes than normal. Further, two subgroups of patients were found with abnormalities lateralized to the left hemisphere. One group was found to have abnormal P100 amplitude-intensity patterns at the left temporal site while the other group showed deviant N…

Wave I of early auditory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Early auditory evoked potentials (EAEPs) were recorded in a series of 71 consecutively examined patients suffering from clinically definite or probable multiple sclerosis (MS). Wave I abnormalities, i.e., delayed latency, with or without reduced amplitude, were observed in 15 such patients and were interpreted as due to MS in 8 of them. As EAEP wave I is identical with the potential N1 in electrocochleography and corresponds to activity of the most distal part of the acoustic nerve or the spiral ganglion, it is concluded that the peripheral part of the acoustic nerve is involved in about 10% o…

[A study of spinal evoked potentials recording from surface electrodes].

With non-invasive method, spinal evoked potentials to the stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle were studied in 20 normal subjects. Lumbosacral spinal evoked potentials, with a reference electrode on the contralateral shoulder or ear, demonstrated two well-defined negative peaks. The first peak originated from a traveling wave of depolarization in afferent fibers in the cauda equina, and the second peak originated in the spinal cord. But, with the use of a knee reference contralateral to the side of stimulation, it consisted of only one negative peak, which originated in the c…

Somatosensory evoked potentials following trigeminal nerve stimulation in trigeminal neuralgia.

The examination of somatosensory evoked potentials following trigeminal nerve stimulation in 20 subjects with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia revealed a pathological increase in latency of the first positive component on the involved side in 7 (41%) of the 17 patients without antecedent surgical treatment. The mean difference in latency between the two sides was 1.3 msec (2p greater than or equal to 0.005). These results are indicative of microtraumatization of the trigeminal nerve in the posterior fossa by blood vessels, for example, leading to local demyelinization. The method seems to be of…

Somatosensory evoked potentials. Diagnostic criteria and abnormalities in cerebral lesions.

In order to advance the practical application of measuring evoked cortical responses following electrical stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist (SEP) in clinical neurology, diagnostic criteria, consisting of the onset latency, peak latency and 2 indices of the first 3 negative components, and their left-and-right differences, were proposed and applied to 65 patients with cerebral lesions of various aetiologies. The criteria used were shown to be very useful in distinguishing between normal subjects and patients with cerebral lesions. The N1 and N2 components were related to the involvem

Changes in visual evoked potentials of schizophrenics after addition test.

Visual evoked potentials were obtained for schizophrenics, neurotics and patients with affective disorders, and comparison between those before and after an addition test for 15 min was made. Reduction in amplitude and prolongation of latency of the potential were observed in schizophrenics after the test, while there was no change after that in neurotics and patients with affective psychosis. In schizophrenics, 4 types of changes in amplitude of the potential could be seen after the test. Namely, marked reduction occurred in A1 (A1 type), in A3 with fast recovery (A3f type), in A3 with slow r…

Effects of postinatal stress on visual and auditory evoked potentials.

Maturation of visual and auditory evoked potentials (mainly the P3 wave) of 10 controls and of 10 infants exposed to recurrent postnatal stressful events (crying spells lacking organic basis) have been compared. The sourse of maturation of P3 waves may serve as indicator of growth and nature of cognitive processes (including perception). Recurrent srying spells seemed to delay appearance of visual P3 wave, prolonged its latency, and delayed appearance of visible differences in the shape of visual P3 wave upon exposure of the subjects to different visual experiences. A compensatory increase of …

The value of somatosensory and motor evoked evoked potentials in pre-clinical spondylotic cervical cord compression.

Previous studies have yielded conflicting data concerning the value of evoked potential parameters in the assessment of clinical relevance of cervical cord compression in clinically "silent" cases. The aim of this study was to assess the value of somatosensory (SEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP) in the evaluation and prediction of the clinical course, by means of a 2-year follow-up prospective electrophysiological and clinical study performed in patients with clinically "silent" spondylotic cervical cord compression. Thirty patients with MR signs of spondylotic cervical cord compression bu…

[Motor Evoked Potential].

Motor evoked potential(MEP)is the most widely used intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring measure. It includes cortical direct stimulation MEP(dMEP), which directly stimulates the primary motor cortex of the frontal lobe identified by short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials, and transcranial MEP(tcMEP), which involves high-current or high-voltage transcranial stimulation using cork-screw electrodes installed in the scalp. dMEP is performed in brain tumor surgery close to the motor area. tcMEP is simple, safe, and widely used in spinal and cerebral aneurysm surgeries. The increase i…

[Somatosensory evoked potential].

Somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) has been widely used for monitoring the abnormal nerve conduction in various diseases. In non-anesthetized patients, Abeta fibers are electrically stimulated during SEP measurements. In anesthesiological field, it is used as a short latency somatosensory potential (SSEP), because its latency and amplitude are relatively constant. To detect the conduction abnormality from the upper extremities to the brain, median nerve stimulation is used. For the detection of spinal cord abnormality during operation, posterior tibial nerve stimulation is often used. It is

Evoked potential testing.

Electrophysiologic tests of the sacral neuromuscular system and its suprasegmental control may be divided into EMG and methods involving stimulation (i.e., evoked potential and sacral reflex testing). The latter group of methods tests the function of defined parts of the motor or sensory nervous system, or reflex arcs. There already is ample experience with testing the somatic sensory pathways (pudendal SEP) and the (somatic) sacral reflex arc, whereas other methods (testing the motor system and tests involving visceral afferents and sympathetic efferents) need further study to establish their

[Visual evoked potential].

Under the pathological conditions, the VEP may show changes in amplitude, latency, or waveform in one or more of its components. The major advantage of the pattern reversal VEP over the flash VEP lies in smaller variability in the waveform and latency of its components in the healthy population. The flash VEP is, however, particularly useful to infants and newborns. The variation in the waveform of the flash VEP was evaluated, and Type V was abnormal waveform. Subsequently, patients with various CNS diseases were examined. Acute hemiplegic patients showed high amplitude or increased latency pa

Vestibular schwannoma with absent vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to clicks but normal ABR, caloric responses and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to 500 Hz tone bursts.

We report a case of vestibular schwannoma with absent vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) to clicks but normal auditory brainstem responses, caloric responses, and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials to 500 Hz tone bursts. This patient visited our clinic with complaint of sudden right hearing loss. This was the third episode of hearing loss in his right ear. Due to atypical medical history, he underwent further neuro-otological and neuroradiological examinations. Among the neurophysiological tests, only VEMPs to clicks showed abnormal findings (absent responses on the right). MRI r
