The role of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of canine keratoconjunctivitis sicca: the effect of topical Cyclosporin A therapy.

PURPOSE: The exact etiology of dry eye is unknown but is believed to be multifactorial. Apoptosis has been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome (SS). This study attempted to gain a better understanding of the role of apoptosis and its regulation in the patho-physiology of dry eye. The therapeutic effect of immunomodulatory agents such as cyclosporin A (CsA) in the treatment of dry eye, particularly its impact on the level of apoptosis in the target tissues, is also investigated. METHODS: A colony of dogs with spontaneous chronic idiopathic keratocon

Teaching Health as a Human Right in the Undergraduate Context: Challenges and Opportunities.

This paper explores the possibility of a pedagogy about health and human rights that is understandable and persuasive to undergraduate students yet does not succumb to a reductive dualism of optimism and pessimism. In 2014, we presented the topic of health and human rights in an introductory undergraduate global health course in conjunction with the exhibit "Health is a Human Right: Race and Place in America" at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. The exhibition highlighted the United States' complicated legacy and failures of health and human rights, with an emphasis on ongoi

Barriers to effective treatment of vaginal atrophy with local estrogen therapy.

Vaginal atrophy is a common condition among postmenopausal women, among whom many exhibit both vulvovaginal symptoms (eg, dryness, irritation, itching, and pain with intercourse) and urinary symptoms (eg, increased frequency, urgency, incontinence, urinary tract infections, and dysuria). Unfortunately, few women with symptoms of vaginal atrophy report seeking treatment from a health care provider. The goal of this article is to examine reasons why patients and health care providers do not engage in discourse regarding this important topic. It is important to initiate conversations with postmen

Moderated mediation of the link between parent-adolescent conflict and adolescent risk-taking: The role of physiological regulation and hostile behavior in an experimentally controlled investigation.

Compared to childhood and adulthood, adolescence is a time of greater risk-taking behavior, potentially resulting in serious consequences. Theories of adolescent brain development highlight the imbalance between neural circuitry for reward vs. regulation. Although this imbalance may make adolescents more vulnerable to impaired decision-making in the context of heightened arousal, not all adolescents exhibit problematic risk behavior, suggesting other factors are involved. Relatedly, parent-adolescent conflict increases in mid-adolescence, and is linked to negative outcomes like substance use r

[Visualizing the 'unspeakable': venereal diseases at the 1926 GeSoLei (Great Exhibition for Health Care, Social Welfare, and Physical Exercise)].

The GeSoLei (Great Exhibition for Health Care, Social Welfare, and Physical Exercise) held in Düsseldorf in 1926 was one of the largest exhibitions of the Weimar Republic. At its core was the often visual communication of health-related topics-including the presentation of sexually transmitted diseases. These subjects were conveyed within the complex interplay between medical education, moral normalization, and esthetic staging. The section "Common Diseases, Common Ailments, Common Vices" (Main Section Social Welfare) brought together conditions such as tuberculosis, alcoholism, and syphilis-s

Preclinical overview of brinzolamide.

The development of topically active carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) is a significant recent achievement in glaucoma medical treatment. Brinzolamide, the newest topical CAI, exhibits selectivity, high affinity, and potent inhibitory activity for the carbonic anhydrase type II isozyme (CA-II), which is involved in aqueous humor secretion. These characteristics, along with good ocular bioavailability, make brinzolamide maximally effective in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) by locally inhibiting CA-II in the ciliary processes and suppressing aqueous humor secretion. Notable among its attr
