Artificial light at night (ALAN/A) can not only alter the behavior and communication of biological organisms, it can also interact with other stressors. Despite its widespread use and the numerous potential ecological effects, little is known about the impact of ALAN on plant litter decomposition under cadmium (Cd) pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Intra- and extracellular recording techniques were used to study the epileptiform activity generated by guinea pig hippocampal slices perfused with free-magnesium artificial cerebrospinal fluid in the presence of physiologic (4 mM), reduced (2 mM) or elevated (8 mM) extracellular potassium concentrations ([K(+)](o)). Extracellular field potentials along with intracellular recordings were recorded in CA1 or CA3 region. Reduction of [K(+)](o) significantly increased the latency of epileptiform field potential (EFP) appearance as well as burst discharge duration and decreased EFP repetition rate.

The extracellular proteinase complex of the microscopic fungus Aspergillus ochraceus 513 was isolated, purified, and separated by affinity chromatography on bacillichin-silochrom and subsequent column chromatography on DEAE-Toyopearl 650 M. The extracellular enzyme of the protein C activator type had a molecular mass of 36.5 kDa and activity close to that of the Agkistrodon snake venom protein C activator. The fibrinolytic and anticoagulant activities of the enzyme were investigated.

The release of excitatory amino acids (EAAs) from neuron-free cultures of neocortical astrocytes was monitored using HPLC. The neuroligand bradykinin caused a dose-dependent receptor-mediated increase in release of the EAAs glutamate and aspartate from type 1 astrocyte cell cultures obtained from rat cerebral cortex. Seventy Wistar rats are used to study the changes in pineal intercellular canaliculi over a 21-hour period and for two different photoperiods (pre-autumn, first week of September, and winter, first week of February). The study considers these changes at pineal body, cortical and medullar level separately, and compares the values obtained. This article describes the ultrastructural study of skeletal muscle biopsy specimens from five patients following envenomization by tropical rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus). Nine cases of superficial pemphigus that were treated by dapsone as the initial mode of therapy are reported. Five patients, all having low or negative serum anti-intercellular cement substance antibody titers, responded dramatically, while the other four patients, showing high titers of anti-intercellular cement substance antibodies, did not respond to this treatment. Complications of therapy were observed in three cases.
