CNN-based severity prediction of neurodegenerative diseases using gait data.

Neurodegenerative diseases occur because of degeneration in brain cells but can manifest as impairment of motor functions. One of the side effects of this impairment is an abnormality in walking. With the development of sensor technologies and artificial intelligence applications in recent years, the disease severity of patients can be estimated using their gait data. In this way, decision support applications for grading the severity of the disease that the patient suffers in the clinic can be developed. Thus, patients can have treatment methods more suitable for the severity of the disease.

Preoperatively predicting failure to achieve the minimum clinically important difference and substantial clinical benefit for total knee arthroplasty patients using machine learning.

BACKGROUND: A clear understanding of minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and substantial clinical benefit (SCB) is essential for effectively implementing patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs) as a performance measure for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Since not achieving MCID and SCB may reflect suboptimal surgical benefit, the primary aim of this study was to use machine learning to predict patients who may not achieve the threshold-based outcomes (i.e., MCID and SCB) on the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for Joint Replacement (KOOS JR) following TKA. METHODS

Predicting maternal risk level using machine learning models.

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity and mortality remain critical health concerns globally. As a result, reducing the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) is part of goal 3 in the global sustainable development goals (SDGs), and previously, it was an important indicator in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Therefore, identifying high-risk groups during pregnancy is crucial for decision-makers and medical practitioners to mitigate mortality and morbidity. However, the availability of accurate predictive models for maternal mortality and maternal health risks is challenging. Compared with traditiona

Developing an explainable machine learning model to predict false-negative citrin deficiency cases in newborn screening.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal Intrahepatic Cholestasis caused by Citrin Deficiency (NICCD) is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting the urea cycle and energy metabolism. Newborn screening (NBS) usually relies on elevated citrulline, but some patients have normal citrulline, resulting in false negatives and delayed diagnosis. This study develops an explainable machine learning (ML) model to predict false-negative NICCD cases during NBS. METHODS: Data from 53 false-negative NICCD patients and 212 controls, collected retrospectively between 2011 and 2024, were analyzed. The dataset was split into a t

Detection and Visualisation of Pneumoconiosis Using an Ensemble of Multi-Dimensional Deep Features Learned from Chest X-rays.

Pneumoconiosis is a group of occupational lung diseases induced by mineral dust inhalation and subsequent lung tissue reactions. It can eventually cause irreparable lung damage, as well as gradual and permanent physical impairments. It has affected millions of workers in hazardous industries throughout the world, and it is a leading cause of occupational death. It is difficult to diagnose early pneumoconiosis because of the low sensitivity of chest radiographs, the wide variation in interpretation between and among readers, and the scarcity of B-readers, which all add to the difficulty in diag
