Pathology of a lepromatous eye.

Histopathological examination of an enucleated eye from a lepromatous leprosy patient showed the cornea, ciliary body, and part of the choroid to be infiltrated by macrophages filled with Mycobacterium leprae. The walls of blood vessels in the sclera, ciliary body and the anterior choroid demonstrated the presence of M. leprae, giving credence to the blood-borne entry of M. leprae into the eye. Unlike the eyes of experimental animals infected with M. leprae, histopathological study of this eye from a lepromatous leprosy patient demonstrated that M. leprae, although demonstrable in the anterior

Concentrations of PGE2 and TXB2 in the Eyes of Mice with Disseminated Acanthamoebiasis.

Previous studies have shown that Acanthamoeba spp. may invade the eyes by migrating along the optic nerve to the eyes from the brain. This study aimed to confirm the presence of inflammation in the eyes of mice with disseminated acanthamoebiasis by examining prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and thromboxane B2 (TXB2) concentrations in the eyes of immunocompetent and immunocompromised mice intranasally inoculated with Acanthamoeba spp. The PGE2 concentration was statistically significantly lower in the immunocompromised amoebae-infected mice on 8 dpi compared with the noninfected group of animals, and it

Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Eye: Ophthalmic Manifestations, Pathogenesis, and One Health Perspectives.

Infectious diseases may lead to ocular complications including uveitis, an ocular inflammatory condition with potentially sight-threatening sequelae, and conjunctivitis, inflammation of the conjunctiva. Emerging infectious pathogens with known ocular findings include Ebola virus, Zika virus, Avian influenza virus, Nipah virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronaviruses, and Dengue virus. Re-emerging pathogens with ocular findings include Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium species that lead to malaria. The concept of One Health involves a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to achie

Anterior Segment Findings in Ocular Myocysticercosis in Children: Is it non- specific?

Ocular cysticercosis is a preventable cause of blindness. Medical therapy has been recommended for the retro-orbital and extraocular muscle form. Surgical management is largely done in cases with conjunctival or lid affliction. Though, the medical management is simple; however, the diagnosis is challenging. The anterior segment findings often mimic the more common pathologies and hence often missed at the early stage. This case series of 3 pediatric patients, tries to highlight certain clinical clues which are suggestive of ocular myocysticercosis in children. Literature often recalls anterior

Endophthalmitis following penetrating eye injuries.

Postinjury endophthalmitis is the eye infection with the worst prognosis. A retrospective 9-year study was made of penetrating eye injuries, with an analysis of the incidence of infection and its relation to the type of wound and the presence of intraocular foreign bodies. There were 403 cases of penetrating eye injury; of these, 233 affected the cornea and 170 involved the posterior pole. Intraocular foreign bodies were present in 40 cases. Endophthalmitis developed in 4.2% of cases (17/403), and was more common in patients with posterior pole involvement (7%) than in purely corneal trauma (2

The Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 on Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Respiratory Infections.

Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains an ongoing threat, concerns regarding other respiratory infections remain. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic various epidemiologic trends have been observed in other respiratory viruses including a reduction in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus infections following onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Observations suggest that infections with other respiratory viruses were reduced with social distancing, mask wearing, eye protection, and hand hygiene practices. Coinfections with COVID-19 exist not only with other respiratory viruses but al

A new bovine conjunctiva model shows that Listeria monocytogenes invasion is associated with lysozyme resistance.

Listerial keratoconjunctivitis ('silage eye') is a wide spread problem in ruminants causing economic losses to farmers and impacts negatively on animal welfare. It results from direct entry of Listeria monocytogenes into the eye, often following consumption of contaminated silage. An isolation protocol for bovine conjunctival swabbing was developed and used to sample both infected and healthy eyes bovine eyes (n=46). L. monocytogenes was only isolated from one healthy eye sample, and suggests that this organism can be present without causing disease. To initiate a study of this disease, an inf

Hydrogel contact lens-induced Pseudomonas keratitis in a rabbit model.

Unused soft contact lenses (SCL) containing 38.6% water (polymacon) and 70% water (lidofilcon A) were exposed to Pseudomonas aeruginosa (10(8) CFU/ml) for 60 min and washed. The contaminated lenses were used on rabbit eyes under the following conditions: for 1 h on a scratched corneal epithelium (16 eyes, four infected), for 24 h on normal cornea (eight eyes, none infected), and for 7 days on normal cornea (eight eyes, three bacterial infections and two noninfected epithelial defects). A control group of rabbits used an uncontaminated lens for 7 days (eight eyes, four noninfected epithelial de

Locality is the strongest predictor of expert performance in image-based differentiation of bacterial and fungal corneal ulcers from India.

PURPOSE: This study sought to identify the sources of differential performance and misclassification error among local (Indian) and external (non-Indian) corneal specialists in identifying bacterial and fungal keratitis based on corneal photography. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of survey data assessing the ability of corneal specialists to identify acute bacterial versus fungal keratitis by using corneal photography. One-hundred images of 100 eyes from 100 patients with acute bacterial or fungal keratitis in South India were previously presented to an international cohort of co

From the diagnosis of infectious keratitis to discriminating fungal subtypes; a deep learning-based study.

Infectious keratitis (IK) is a major cause of corneal opacity. IK can be caused by a variety of microorganisms. Typically, fungal ulcers carry the worst prognosis. Fungal cases can be subdivided into filamentous and yeasts, which shows fundamental differences. Delays in diagnosis or initiation of treatment increase the risk of ocular complications. Currently, the diagnosis of IK is mainly based on slit-lamp examination and corneal scrapings. Notably, these diagnostic methods have their drawbacks, including experience-dependency, tissue damage, and time consumption. Artificial intelligence (AI)

[Staphylococcal endophthalmitis following cataract surgery in a patient with ocular rosacea].

PURPOSE: To report staphylococcal endophthalmitis following cataract surgery in a patient with ocular rosacea. OBSERVATION: A 69-year-old man presented with decreased visual acuity in the right eye, a corneal abscess on the incision and hypopyon 2 weeks after phacoemulsification with intraocular lens placement. The patient was hospitalized. A diagnostic vitreous tap was performed. Antibiotic therapy was initiated both locally (two intravitreal shots + topical administration) and intravenously. RESULTS: Vitreal tap cultures indicated Staphylococcus aureus. The patient's clinical status improv

Eight corneal clinical challenges for primary care optometrists.

Since the cornea is an avascular tissue and does not possess its own elaborate system of defenses, its response to insulting agents is multifactorial and varies according to the immune response of the host, the virulence of the infecting organism, and the site of infection. An overview of clinical conditions with different etiologies is presented here, with a discussion of the various responses of the corneal tissue to a variety of ocular pathogens.
