[Leonine facies in carcinoid syndrome].

Carcinoid syndrome is a rare disorder caused when elevated levels of vasoactive substances secreted by a carcinoid tumor fail to be metabolized by the liver. This can occur for a variety of reasons including metastatic invasion of the organ. Carcinoid syndrome results in elevated levels of 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the urine. Clinical manifestations include: flushing, diarrhea, bronchospasm, and heart failure. We describe a patient with carcinoid syndrome and hepatic metastases, in whom the key symptom of persistent facial edema resulted in conspicuous leonine facies; there was a partial r

Lessons learned from the investigation of a cluster of cutaneous anthrax cases in Connecticut.

In 2007, two cases of cutaneous anthrax associated with West African drum making were reported in Connecticut in a drum-maker and his child. Although both cases were due to exposure to naturally occurring Bacillus anthracis from imported animal hides, ensuing investigative and remediation efforts were affected by the intentional B anthracis attacks in 2001. To share our experience of responding to an outbreak of anthrax in the biologic terrorism preparedness era, we summarize Connecticut's investigation and describe lessons learned. Laboratory capacity to rapidly assist in diagnosing anthrax,

Toxic epidermal necrolysis probably due to cosmetic cream: a case report.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a severe and life-threatening cutaneous reaction usually caused by systemic drug administration. Preparations applied to the skin and mucous membranes topically very rarely induce TEN. We present a case of TEN in a 35-year-old woman probably due to facial application of an over-the-counter (OTC) cosmetic cream.

[Facial Demodex infection among college students in Tangshan].

A survey indicated that the prevalence of Demodex infection among 512 college students in Tangshan was 36.3% (186/512), that of males and females was 39.3% (81/206) and 34.3% (105/306) respectively (P>0.05). The infection of Demodex folliculorum accounted for 82.3% (153/186), followed by D. brevis (7.5%, 14/186) and mixed infection (10.2%, 19/186). Orofacial Crohn's disease: an oral enigma.

Crohn's disease is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory disorder which may involve any segment of the bowel from mouth to anus. The mucocutaneous manifestations of Crohn's disease in the orofacial region are multiple, including oral Crohn's disease, metastatic Crohn's disease in sites noncontiguous with the bowel system, and reactive disorders such as pyoderma gangrenosum. Clinicians should be familiar with these extraintestinal manifestations and include this important and often serious disease in the evaluation of patients with selected orofacial disorders. The recognition of these manifestati

Atrophoderma vermiculatum: a case report and review of the literature on keratosis pilaris atrophicans.

Atrophoderma vermiculatum (AV) is a rare follicular disorder primarily affecting children with reticular or honeycomb atrophy of the cheeks and forehead. Along with keratosis pilaris atrophicans faciei (KPAF) and keratosis follicularis spinulosa decalvans (KFSD), AV falls within the broader spectrum of keratosis pilaris atrophicans (KPA). Although these 3 variants of KPA have unique presentations and associations, they can all be frustratingly difficult to treat. We describe a sporadic case of AV that presented in late adolescence, a relatively late age of onset.

Corrective cosmetics are effective for women with facial pigmentary disorders.

Visible facial lesions are a common and burdensome skin problem. This study examines the impact of corrective cosmetics in women with severe facial pigmentary disorders. Enrollment consisted of 73 women with one or more of the following conditions: acne, dermatosis papulosis, hypopigmentation, lentigines, melasma, rosacea, vascular proliferations, or other facial scars. The corrective cosmetic (Dermablend) was applied at the initial visit, at which time instructions and a supply of product were provided. Progressive systemic sclerosis: rare localization of the maxillofacial district.

The authors focus on a case of scleroderma, or progressive systemic sclerosis. Scleroderma is a disease of unknown cause, characterized by an abnormal synthesis of connective tissues that causes a sclerosis of the skin involving organs and systems at various levels. It may appear in different forms and may involve, although not frequently, the maxillofacial district. The authors examined a 21-year-old woman who had been diagnosed with systemic progressive sclerosis in 1994. The patient showed a strong limitation of oral aperture, evidenced by an electrognathographic test, and osseous changes.
