Transneuronal viral tracing was applied to localize preganglionic parasympathetic neurons in the brainstem which innervate the extraorbital lacrimal gland in the rat. The Bartha strain of pseudorabies virus was injected into the lacrimal gland, and after different survival times, the superior cervical and Gasserian ganglia, the upper thoracic spinal cords and the brainstems were immunostained by antiviral antiserum. Virus-labelled neurons appeared in the ganglia and in the ventrolateral part of the ipsilateral brainstem at the pontomedullary junction 45 h after inoculation. The virus-labelled

Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) has recently generated great interest due to its potential as a therapeutic agent for the treatment of hu … by three behavioural tests. Moreover, histological counts of the phrenic nerve myelinated axons and facial nucleus motoneurons indicated a significant reduction of motoneuron loss. These results suggest that polymer-encapsulated cells releasing neurotrophic factors may provide a potential delivery system for treating neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS.

This report describes a rare complication after the resection of a tumor of the posterior fossa, the "one-and-a-half" syndrome. The one-and-a-half syndrome is a disturbance of horizontal eye movements in which patients have lateral gaze palsy in one direction and internuclear ophthalmoplegia in the other direction. The patient was a 54-year-old woman who developed headaches, diplopia, and blurred vision over 6 months. Computed tomographic scans and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an enhancing, mixed density, midline mass of the cerebellum. After a resection of the mass, an anaplastic a

The temporal relationship between severity of peripheral axonal injury and T lymphocyte trafficking to the neuronal cell bodies of origin in the brain has been unclear. We sought to test the hypothesis that greater neuronal death induced by disparate forms of peripheral nerve injury would result in differential patterns of T cell infiltration and duration at the cell bodies of origin in the brain and that these measures would correlate with the magnitude of neuronal death over time and cumulative neuronal loss. To test this hypothesis, we compared the time course of CD3(+) T cell infiltration

Noonan syndrome (NS) is a common autosomal dominant disorder with considerable clinical heterogeneity. Mutations in the PTPN11 gene, encoding the SHP2 protein, constitute the most prevalent genetic cause of NS. Genetic sequencing of a pedigree exhibiting typical facial dysmorphism and short stature identified the same heterozygous PTPN11 variant (NM_001330437.2: c.923 A > G, p.Asn308Ser) in all seven affected individuals, co-segregating with the phenotype. Using a multi-level approach that integrated experimental structural analysis, molecular dynamics simulations, protein-protein interaction

The central distribution of afferents from individual eight nerve branches (N VIII) and mechanical lateral line end organs in mormyrid fish are described. Afferents were labeled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) placed on the cut ends of the different N VIII branches and the anterior and posterior lateral line nerves. Descending, tangential, and magnocellular nuclei receive input almost exclusively from the utriculus and canals. Nucleus octavius receives afferents from the lateral line nerves and all N VIII branches, with one part receiving exclusive and bilateral input from the sacculus. Affe

The retrotrapezoid nucleus (RTN) of rodents is located ventral to the facial motor nucleus (7N) and consists of acid-sensitive neurons that activate breathing and mediate the central component of the ventilatory response to hypercapnia. In rodents, RTN neurons can be histologically identified by the presence of paired-like homeobox 2B positive nuclei (Phox2b +) and the absence of cytoplasmic choline acetyltransferase (ChAT-) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH-). Up to 50% of rodent RTN neurons synthesise galanin, and 88% express pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP). The human R

The DREZ operation was first done in 1975 on a patient with arm pain following a brachial plexus avulsion. Since then approximately 500 patients have undergone the DREZ procedure under our care for treatment of various pain syndromes including deafferentation pain, post-herpetic neuralgia, and post-paraplegia pain. We report several modifications in instrumentation and technique. Currently, we use two types of electrodes for lesion production. The first is the standard 0.25 mm diameter, thermocouple, temperature monitoring electrode which has a 2 mm long tip for introduction into the spinal co

Lateral medullary syndrome (LMS), or Wallenberg syndrome, typically arises from ischemia of the dorsolateral medulla and is characterized by crossed sensory deficits, ipsilateral cranial nerve involvement, cerebellar ataxia, and Horner's syndrome. We report a 66-year-old hypertensive female who presented with classical clinical features suggestive of LMS, including ipsilateral facial sensory loss, contralateral body sensory impairment, palatal weakness, ipsilateral Horner's syndrome, and cerebellar signs. However, diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a predominantly paramedia

Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculoma is a rare but severe form of tuberculosis (TB) that can mimic other neurological disorders and poses major diagnostic challenges, especially with drug resistance. We report a case of a woman in her 60s who developed CNS tuberculoma four years after completing anti-tuberculosis therapy (ATT) for pulmonary TB. She presented with progressive left-sided weakness, facial asymmetry, and dysphagia. MRI revealed a ring-enhancing lesion in the right caudate nucleus with a lipid-lactate peak on spectroscopy, consistent with tuberculoma. Drug susceptibility testin

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a rare genetic skin condition, causes ultraviolet (UV)-induced neoplasms and possible neurological deficits including sensorineural hearingloss. We present the first case in literature of bilateral cochlear implantation (CI) in a patient with XP-D with neurodegeneration. Multi-disciplinary team members (national XP team, dermatologist, anaesthetist, theatre team, biophysicists) were involved. UV exposure from equipment and areas where the 14-year-old patient would track was measured. Maximum possible surgery was performed under operating headlights to limit higher-U

Oculodentodigital dysplasia, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding gap junction protein 1, classically presents with typical facial features, dental and ocular anomalies, and syndactyly. Oligosymptomatic patients are common and difficult to recognize, in particular if syndactyly is absent. Neurologic manifestation occurs in approximately 30% of patients, and leukodystrophy or T2 hypointensity of gray matter structures or both have been noted in individual patients. To investigate MR imaging changes in oculodentodigital dysplasia, we retrospectively and systematically

Background: Eight-and-a-half syndrome (EHS) is one-and-a-half syndrome [(conjugated horizontal gaze palsy and internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO)] plus ipsilateral fascicular seventh cranial nerve palsy. Involvement of lower pontine tegmentum including the abducens nucleus, the ipsilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF), and the adjacent facial colliculus contribute to the clinical findings of EHS. Recently, nine syndrome with addition of hemiparesis or hemianesthesia to EHS (due to involvement of adjacent corticospinal tract or medial lemniscus) is suggested. Methods: Consecutive patient

A 5-year-old male Labrador Retriever had progressive incoordination, visual impairment, and exercise intolerance. Coarse facial features, macrodactylia, unilateral corneal dystrophy, generalized osteopenia, progressive neurologic deterioration, and a positive urine spot test for acid mucopolysaccharides suggested mucopolysaccharidosis. Intracytoplasmic vacuoles were most prevalent in epithelial cells, endothelial cells, and histiocytes of liver, kidney, thyroid gland, and spleen. Ultrastructural examination disclosed electron-lucent floccular to lamellar membrane-bound storage material charact

We report on a girl presenting with facial dysmorphic features and breathing difficulties upon birth. She was hypotonic, developed a metabolic acidosis, and died two days old of heart failure. Post-mortem examination revealed abnormalities of brain, lungs, heart and liver. In cultured skin fibroblasts activities of enzymes of oxidative phosphorylation, pyruvate metabolism, beta-oxidation and other mitochondrial (mt) metabolic pathways were markedly decreased. Activities of enzymes localized in the mt outer membrane or in other cell organelles were found to be normal. The mitochondria appeared

Introduction: Hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) is a rare form of trans-synaptic degeneration involving the Guillain-Mollaret triangle, characterized by enlargement of the inferior olivary nucleus-unlike the atrophy typical of most neurodegenerative processes. It is usually associated with stroke, surgical injury, or demyelination, but rarely follows hemorrhage from a cavernous malformation (CM). This report presents a case of HOD secondary to a mesencephalic CM hemorrhage, with emphasis on imaging findings and diagnostic considerations. Case Description: A 55-year-old woman presented wi

Swallow is a primitive behavior regulated by medullary networks, responsible for movement of food/liquid from the oral cavity to the esophag … llow and the BHE reflex. Recordings identified novel spatially compact networks in the IRt near the facial nucleus (VIIn) that were active during fictive swallow, suggesting that the swallow network is not restricted to the caudal medulla. These findings also establish the utility of using this in vitro preparation to investigate how functionally heterogeneous m …

Headache, upper torso and upper limb pain can all originate in lesions of the cervical spine. The pain distribution is similar whether the cause is traumatic or degenerative. Nociceptive fibres are present in many cervical spine structures including the disc annulus, facet joint capsules, muscles, meninges, arteries, nerve roots and dorsal root ganglia. Such nerves are not present in the disc nucleus, facet articular cartilages and the ligamentum flavum. Central nervous connections between the trigeminal nucleus and upper cervical sensory input provide an explanation for some forms of headache
