Automated capture and transfer of human facial expressions to humanoid robots for realistic patient simulation.

Realistic reproduction of human facial expressions is essential for realistic interactions between humans and humanoid robots. This work presents a data-driven framework for transferring human facial expressions to a humanoid robot and a virtual avatar, aiming to enhance emotional expressiveness and assess its applicability in psychiatric training scenarios. The proposed approach enables cross-domain facial expression mapping while accounting for mechanical constraints of robotic actuation. A user study (n = 40) evaluated emotion recognition across three stimulus categories: human faces (H), u

Scaffolding the social mind: emotion recognition supports mentalizing but reinforces bias.

Mentalizing-inferring others' mental states-is a core social function supported by both perceptual and contextual processes. Emotion recognition similarly unfolds in two stages: early perceptual decoding of facial features followed by context-sensitive interpretation. Here, we tested whether emotion recognition scaffolds mentalizing across these stages and whether they attenuate or amplify social bias. Participants (N = 34) completed a face categorization task during EEG recording, in which mentalizing was operationalized as differential neural responses to mindful (human) versus mindless (dol

On the mechanism underlying facial-affective agnosia in senile demented patients.

Two experiments were conducted in which senile demented patients were shown pictures of happy, sad, and angry faces, and tested for their ability to recognize these emotional expressions. Their affect recognition was obviously impaired, as they tended to respond to the line or feature characteristics of the faces, instead of the affective meaning that was suggested by the facial expressions. This impairment was somewhat overcome either by adding verbal cues which created an affective set, or by making feature detection irrelevant to the recognition process. It was shown that if the tendency to

Disgust and happiness recognition correlate with anteroventral insula and amygdala volume respectively in preclinical Huntington's disease.

Patients with Huntington's disease (HD) can show disproportionate impairments in recognizing facial signals of disgust, but the neural basis of this deficit remains unclear. Functional imaging studies have implicated the anterior insula in the ability to recognize disgust, but have identified other structures as well, including the basal ganglia. In view of variable insula and basal ganglia volume changes in HD, we used voxel-based morphometry to map regional variations in gray matter (GM) volume in participants carrying the mutation for HD, and correlated this with their performance on a test

The "zipper model of empathy" applied to violence in schizophrenia: A search for social cognitive underpinnings of lack of empathic behavior.

BACKGROUND: The "zipper model of empathy" has been proposed for psychopathy. It postulates that empathic behavior may fail to arise due to impaired facial emotion recognition. In this study, we examined if the model may be of relevance for schizophrenia. METHODS: In a sample of participants with schizophrenia and a history of severe interpersonal violence, associations between measures of social cognition (emotion recognition, theory of mind) and aspects of psychopathy (lack of empathy, lack of remorse) were investigated. A non-violent sample experiencing schizophrenia served as a control gro

Response to Training in Emotion Recognition Function for Mild TBI/PTSD Survivors: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: For those with comorbid mild traumatic brain injury/post-traumatic stress disorder (mTBI/PTSD), deficits are common with regard to recognition of emotion expression in others. These deficits can cause isolation and suicidal ideation. For mTBI/PTSD, there is a dearth of information regarding effective treatment. In pilot work, we developed and tested an innovative treatment to improve recognition of both affect (facial expression of emotion) and prosody (spoken expression of emotion). METHODS: We enrolled eight Veterans with mTBI/PTSD and administered eight treatment ses

Social Cognition in Opioid Use Disorder.

Background: Opioid use disorder (OUD) is associated with significant functional impairment and neurocognitive dysfunction, but only a handful of studies have investigated social cognitive abilities in this condition. This study aimed to investigate facial emotion recognition accuracy/biases and two different aspects of theory of mind (ToM) (ToM-decoding vs ToM-reasoning) in people with recovered OUD. Methods: The participants included 32 people with recovered OUD who were on Buprenorphine + Naloxone (B/N) maintenance treatment and 32 healthy controls. In addition to neurocognitive tasks, both

False recognition/misidentification of unfamiliar person after cerebral infarction: A case report.

An 84-year-old man manifested false recognition/misidentification of unfamiliar person after cardiogenic cerebral infarction. He had good visual and hearing acuity, no hemianopsia, unilateral spatial neglect and visual object agnosia. However, he was unable to remember faces of his rehabilitation therapists, and repeatedly misidentified other patients' visitors and therapists as his family members and friends, without recognizing his mistakes. General cognitive function was preserved with Hasegawa dementia score-revised (HDS-R) 25/30 (cut-off score 20). In terms of recognition of faces, tasks

Visual experience is not necessary for the development of face-selectivity in the lateral fusiform gyrus.

The fusiform face area responds selectively to faces and is causally involved in face perception. How does face-selectivity in the fusiform arise in development, and why does it develop so systematically in the same location across individuals? Preferential cortical responses to faces develop early in infancy, yet evidence is conflicting on the central question of whether visual experience with faces is necessary. Here, we revisit this question by scanning congenitally blind individuals with fMRI while they haptically explored 3D-printed faces and other stimuli. We found robust face-selective

In this survey, we briefly review the current knowledge on the neurobiological substrate of facial recognition and discuss how the lack of salient stimuli might impact the ability to retain and consolidate learning and memory phenomena underlying face recognition. Such an "abnormal" visual experience raises the intriguing possibility of a "reset" mechanism, …

Improved Visual Recognition Memory Model Based on Grid Cells for Face Recognition.

Traditional facial recognition methods depend on a large number of training samples due to the massive turning of synaptic weights for low-level feature extractions. In prior work, a brain-inspired model of visual recognition memory suggested that grid cells encode translation saccadic eye movement vectors between salient stimulus features. With a small training set for each recognition type, the relative positions among the selected features for each image were represented using grid and feature label cells in Hebbian learning. However, this model is suitable only for the recognition of famil…

Phonagnosia: a dissociation between familiar and unfamiliar voices.

A dissociation between facial recognition and facial discrimination is well known, but investigations of "phonagnosia" (impairment of voice recognition and discrimination) have not been pursued. Using familiar and unfamiliar voices as stimuli, a marked difference between the ability to recognize familiar voice and the ability to discriminate between unfamiliar voices was identified in five patients, and a sixth showed a severe impairment in both tasks. Clinical and radiologic findings in these cases suggest that recognition of familiar voices is impaired by damage to inferior and lateral parie…

Annotated emotional image datasets of Chinese university students in real classrooms for deep learning.

It is challenging for teachers to monitor each student's emotional state in real-time, making personalized learning difficult to achieve. Previous emotion recognition methods, such as support vector machines, are limited by technology and fail to meet practical application requirements. However, the development of deep learning technology offers new solutions for facial expression recognition, which makes emotional interaction and personalized support in education possible. Until now, there has been a lack of facial expression datasets in real classroom settings. To fill this gap, this study c

Evolution of facial color pattern complexity in lemurs.

Interspecific variation in facial color patterns across New and Old World primates has been linked to species recognition and group size. Because group size has opposite effects on interspecific variation in facial color patterns in these two radiations, a study of the third large primate radiation may shed light on convergences and divergences in this context. We therefore compiled published social and ecological data and analyzed facial photographs of 65 lemur species to categorize variation in hair length, hair and skin coloration as well as color brightness. Phylogenetically controlled ana

Emotion recognition deficits in Alzheimer's disease: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emotion recognition is a core component of social cognition and is essential for effective interpersonal communication. A growing body of literature suggests that this ability is impaired in Alzheimer's disease (AD), although the magnitude and nature of the deficit remain unclear. This meta-analysis aimed to quantify emotion recognition impairments in individuals with AD relative to healthy older adults (HOA). METHODS: A systematic search identified 24 eligible studies comparing emotion recognition performance in individuals with AD and HOA. Random-effects models were used to calc

Sex differences in face looking preferences at birth.

While sex differences in behaviour have attracted considerable scientific interest, their underlying causes are complex and remain poorly understood. One approach to understand whether early biological factors might play a partial role is to study newborns, who have limited postnatal experiences. Previous research on neonatal sex differences is extremely limited, and studies that do exist have yielded mixed results, raised methodological concerns, and are yet to be replicated. To assess these gaps, the present study aimed to reevaluate sex differences in neonatal attention. 130 neonates (67 ma

YOLOv5-KCB: A New Method for Individual Pig Detection Using Optimized K-Means, CA Attention Mechanism and a Bi-Directional Feature Pyramid Network.

Individual identification of pigs is a critical component of intelligent pig farming. Traditional pig ear-tagging requires significant human resources and suffers from issues such as difficulty in recognition and low accuracy. This paper proposes the YOLOv5-KCB algorithm for non-invasive identification of individual pigs. Specifically, the algorithm utilizes two datasets-pig faces and pig necks-which are divided into nine categories. Following data augmentation, the total sample size was augmented to 19,680. The distance metric used for K-means clustering is changed from the original algorithm

Radial bias in face identification.

Human vision in the periphery is most accurate for stimuli that point towards the fovea. This so-called radial bias has been linked with the organization and spatial selectivity of neurons at the lowest levels of the visual system, from retinal ganglion cells onwards. Despite evidence that the human visual system is radially biased, it is not yet known whether this bias persists at higher levels of processing, or whether high-level representations are invariant to this low-level orientation bias. We used the case of face identity recognition to address this question. The specialized high-level
