Community-Based Participatory Research: a Family Health History-Based Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program Among Chinese Americans.

Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the USA, as this population increased by 72% between 2000 and 2015. Chinese Americans are the largest Asian subgroup, with a high immigrant proportion (63%), a high poverty rate (14%), and a large percentage of low English competency (41%). Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and cause of cancer death among Chinese Americans. As CRC has a genetic predisposition, family health history (FHH) has been proposed as a preventive tool to stratify CRC risk and guide personalized screening and behavioral mod…

Acculturation, family cohesion, and mental health among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate whether acculturation to U.S. culture is associated with greater posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology through diminished family cohesion among Latinos living with HIV on the U.S.-Mexico border. METHOD: Baseline survey data were analyzed from a sample of Latinos seeking HIV care from a publicly funded HIV clinic in El Paso, Texas. We used a regression-based bootstrapping approach to test our mediation hypothesis. RESULTS: A total of 248 Latinos living with HIV completed the survey, with 96.4% being of Mexican descent, 19.

Family Planning Counseling in Your Pocket: A Mobile Job Aid for Community Health Workers in Tanzania.

To address low contraceptive use in Tanzania, a pilot intervention using a mobile job aid was developed to guide community health workers (CHWs) to deliver integrated counseling on family planning, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In this article, we describe the process of developing the family planning algorithms and implementation of the mobile job aid, discuss how the job aid supported collection of real-time data for decision making, and present the cost of the overall system based on an evaluation of the pilot. The family planning algorithm was developed, beginning

Clinician challenges in providing health care for a morbidly obese family member: a bariatric case study.

Morbid obesity is a chronic disease affecting millions of Americans. The disorder is likely to increase in prevalence because currently one third of the American population is obese. Many factors are associated with morbid obesity, including psychological (eg, depression), physiological (eg, hypothyroidism) mechanisms, sleep disorders (eg, sleep apnea), drug therapy (antidepressants, antidiabetic agents, steroids), and genetics. Increasing numbers of morbidly obese patients are requiring critical care, presenting major challenges to professional staff across the disciplines. This manuscript pr

Family economic strengthening and mental health functioning of caregivers for AIDS-affected children in rural Uganda.

In sub-Saharan Africa, many extended families assume the role of caregivers for children orphaned by AIDS (AIDS-affected children). The economic and psychological stress ensued from caregiving duties often predispose caregivers to poor mental health outcomes. Yet, very few studies exist on effective interventions to support these caregivers. Using data from a randomized controlled trial called Suubi-Maka (N = 346), this paper examines whether a family economic strengthening intervention among families caring for AIDS-affected children (ages 12-14) in Uganda would improve the primary caregivers

Integration of HIV/AIDS services with maternal, neonatal and child health, nutrition, and family planning services.

BACKGROUND: The integration of HIV/AIDS and maternal, neonatal, child health and nutrition services (MNCHN), including family planning (FP) is recognized as a key strategy to reduce maternal and child mortality and control the HIV/AIDS epidemic. However, limited evidence exists on the effectiveness of service integration. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of integrating MNCHN-FP and HIV/AIDS services on health, behavioral, and economic outcomes and to identify research gaps. SEARCH METHODS: Using the Cochrane Collaboration's validated search strategies for identifying reports of HIV interve

Cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorder labels in family practice acted as markers of physical health severity.

OBJECTIVE: Family practitioner diagnostic labels applied in consultation provide a signpost for treatment and management. Yet, it is unknown whether each label reflects the health of the respective patient group. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Consultation records of 7,799 patients aged 50 years and older from six family practices were linked to a cross-sectional baseline health survey. Associations between six mutually exclusive cardiovascular disease and nine mutually exclusive musculoskeletal disorder categories, and physical health severity as measured by the Short Form-12 questionnaire were e
