Pharmacological management of persistent hostility and aggression in persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: a systematic review.

The incidence of aggressive behaviors is higher among persons with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSDs) than among persons without such d … ong selected physically assaultive inpatients (Level C). Adjunctive propranolol, valproic acid, and famotidine are possibly effective for reducing some aspects of hostility or aggression among inpatients with SSDs (Level C). Paliperidone-extended release currently appears to be the agent for the management of hostility among inpatients with SSDs for which th …

Antiulcerative effect of dexmedetomidine on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats.

A gastroprotective effect occurs when α(2) receptors are innervated. The dextro isomer of medetomidine, dexmedetomidine, is a highly selecti … the ulcerous area was 52.1 ± 4.5 mm(2) in the indomethacin control group and 0.5 ± 0.2 mm(2) in the famotidine group. In conclusion, the α(2)-adrenoreceptor agonist dexmedetomidine showed a significant antiulcerative effect in rat gastric tissue at all doses. This antiulcerative effect is stronger with increasing dosage; at the 50 and 100 μg/kg doses, no ulc …

[Adverse effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. A prevalence study in Austria].

OBJECTIVE: Gastrointestinal side effects are the limiting factor in the prescription of non-steroidal antirheumatic drugs (NSAID). However, there are no recent data from Austria. The aim of this prevalence study was therefore to assess the gastrointestinal risk from NSAID in Austria. METHODS: A total of 1347 patients were observed in an outpatient setting between March 2000 and February 2001. Side effects from NSAID were documented by questionnaire at two time points with a mean interval of 31 days. Documented data were analysed descriptively using an explorative strategy. The prevalence of s

Effect of nimesulide on gastric acid secretion in the mouse stomach in vitro.

Nimesulide, a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2, has been reported to cause less gastric damage, compared to other NSAIDs. We investig … he higher concentration of 100 microM. Compared to their effects singly, nimesulide (20 microM) and famotidine (0.15 microM) together caused a further shift without further reduction in maximum acid output of the histamine-stimulated curve, suggesting that nimesulide was not acting at the histamine H(2)-receptor. Nimesulide concentration-dependent reduction …

[Association of biliary calculosis and portal cavernomatosis].

This paper reports the case of a woman, who underwent surgery because of cholelithiasis, with intraoperative finding of prehepatic portal hypertension from portal vein thrombosis ("portal cavernoma") with healthy liver, later confirmed by angiographic studies. This rare pathologic association carries a higher risk of major operative complications; therefore the Authors agree with the general belief that, for these cases, biliary tract surgery should be as simple and safe as possible. In the case of preoperative diagnosis of biliary disease associated with portal cavernoma, should a surgical ap

Direct effects of H2-receptor antagonists on airway smooth muscle and on responses mediated by H1- and H2-receptors.

Because it has been suggested that histamine H2-receptor antagonists may worsen airway constriction in asthmatic patients, we investigated the comparative effects of three histamine H2-receptor antagonists on guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle in vitro. When tested against resting tone, cimetidine, ranitidine and famotidine produced dose-related relaxation with pD2 values (negative log of ED50 for relaxation) (+/- SE, n; eq 5) of 3.20 +/- 0.04, 2.95 +/- 0.16 and 2.97 +/- 0.14, respectively. Concentrations that were below threshold for relaxation, did not elicit contraction. However, when the pr…

[Effect of histamine H2-receptor antagonists on the phosphorus-binding ability of phosphate binders in hemodialysis patients].

We examined the effects of histamine H2-receptor antagonists on the phosphorus binding ability of phosphate binders. Serum calcium, phosphorus, ALP, PTH and arterial blood pH and bicarbonate were measured during treatment with histamine H2-receptor antagonists accompanied by calcium carbonate in sixteen patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Seven patients receiving histamine H2-receptor antagonists without calcium carbonate were selected as controls. In the sixteen patients receiving calcium carbonate, serum calcium, ALP, PTH and arterial blood pH and bicarbonate were not significantly

LP44 (4-[2-(methylthio)phenyl]-N-(1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-1-yl)-1-piperazinehexanamide) exerts anti-ulcer effects via 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 7 activation on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers in rats.

AIM: This study aimed to demonstrate the role of serotonin 7 receptor (5-HT7) and the effects of 5-HT7 agonists and antagonists in an indome … ch difference in gene expression, but even partially decreased the agonist's effect in combination. Famotidine and agonist exerted similar effects. Histopathological findings supported the beneficial effects of 5-HT7 agonist on gastric tissue. CONCLUSION: The study suggested that activation of 5-HT7 receptor showed a significant anti-ulcerogenic effect in t …

The Impact of Efflux Pump Inhibitors on the Activity of Selected Non-Antibiotic Medicinal Products against Gram-Negative Bacteria.

The potential role of non-antibiotic medicinal products in the treatment of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria has recently been inv … s. Significant decreases in the MIC values of other active substances (acyclovir, atorvastatin, and famotidine) tested with pump inhibitors were not observed. The investigated non-antibiotic medicinal products did not alter the MICs of quinolones in the absence and in the presence of PAβN to the studied clinical strains of five groups of species.

Antiulcerogenic effect of gallic Acid in rats and its effect on oxidant and antioxidant parameters in stomach tissue.

In the present study, we investigate the antiulcerogenic effect of gallic acid against aspirin plus pyrolus ligation-induced gastric ulcer in rats. Rats were treated with gallic acid (100 and 200 mg/kg) and famotidine (20 mg/kg) for 1 week, followed by induction of gastric ulcer using the aspirin plus pyrolus ligation model. At the end of 4 h after ligation, the rats were sacrificed and ulcer index, gastric juice volume, pH and other biochemical parameter of gastric juice were evaluated. Stomachs of rats were evaluated biochemically to determine oxidant and antioxidant parameters. Pretreatment…

Laparoscopic removal of an Angelchik prosthesis.

The use of Angelchik prosthetic rings for the surgical treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease has been associated with frequent compli … ion of her dysphagia and complained only of mild reflux symptoms, which were easily controlled with famotidine and antireflux precautions. This case suggests that laparoscopic removal of Angelchik prosthetic rings is feasible for surgeons familiar with advanced laparoscopic procedures of the esophageal hiatus and should be considered for symptomatic patients …

Safety profile of long-term H2-antagonist therapy.

The safety profile of low-dose maintenance therapy with H2-antagonists for duodenal ulcer disease suggests that these agents can be given safely for several years and probably much longer. Because information regarding the use of these compounds for more than 10 years in large numbers of patients is lacking, the safety of these drugs should continue to be monitored. The safety profiles of famotidine and nizatidine will require several additional years of postmarking surveillance data to match the depth of our knowledge regarding cimetidine and ranitidine. Compared to a surgical approach to ulc…

[Effect of teprenone and H2-receptor antagonists on phosphatidylcholine synthesis in the isolated guinea pig gastric glands].

To better understand the mechanism of phosphatidylcholine synthesis in the stomach, [3H] choline incorporation into phosphatidylcholine in response to the drugs which have been commonly used for treating the patients with gastric ulcer was examined using isolated guinea pig gastric glands. Teprenone stimulated [3H] choline incorporation into phosphatidylcholine in gastric glands, up to 146 +/- 11% of control (n = 6, P less than 0.05). On the other hand famotidine, ranitidine and cimetidine significantly decreased the incorporation to 73 +/- 8%, 72 +/- 11%, 67 +/- 11% of control, respectively (…

Inhibition of hepatic apolipoprotein A-I gene expression by histamine.

In a recent high throughput analysis to identify drugs that alter hepatic apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I) expression, histamine receptor one (H … evels in a dose-dependent manner while treatment with H2 receptor antagonists including cimetidine, famotidine, and ranitidine had no effect. We conclude that H1 receptor signaling is a novel pathway of apo A1 gene expression and therefore could be an important therapeutic target for enhancing de-novo apo A-1 synthesis.
