Effects of training about skin cancer on farmers' knowledge level and attitudes.

BACKGROUND: Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. As farmers stay under sun for a long time and handle many different chemicals, they are at risk. This study was carried out to examine the effects of training for protection on their knowledge level and attitudes. METHOD: The subjects were 194 farmers living in a village in Marmara region which most benefits from the sun in Turkey. No sampling was performed. Data were collected before and after six months of training through a personal description form and skin cancer attitude-knowledge form and analyzed using percentage calcu…

Exposure risks and tetanus immunization status in farmers ages 50 and over.

BACKGROUND: Despite an effective tetanus vaccine, tetanus continues to claim lives worldwide. The very young and the elderly are at highest risk for the disease. Farmers are at high risk for injury, the leading factor associated with tetanus. METHODS: As part of a larger study of older members of farm households in the southern United States, 595 participants provided data on health, injuries, work, socioeconomic status, and healthcare. RESULTS: 69% reported receiving a tetanus booster in the past ten years, 24% had not, and 7% did not know. Females were less likely to be currently immunized…

Livestock farmers' perception and epidemiology of bovine trypanosomosis in Kwale District, Kenya.

We did cross-sectional surveys in Kwale District, Kenya to determine the epidemiology of bovine trypanosomosis and livestock owners' perceptions of the disease. The surveys involved relative importance of trypanosomosis, examination of the current disease constraints, current control practices and drug-use patterns. Informal meetings were held with farmers and cattle census undertaken. Tsetse-fly densities and trypanosomosis prevalences in cattle were determined. A total of 132 farmers were interviewed. Trypanosomosis, anaplasmosis, East Coast fever, foot-and-mouth diseases were reported to be…

Antibiotic resistance of faecal enterococci in poultry, poultry farmers and poultry slaughterers.

The prevalence of resistance in enterococci to antibiotics, commonly used for therapy in poultry or as antimicrobial growth promoters (AMGPs), was determined in faecal samples of two chicken populations: broilers in which antibiotic and AMGP use is common and laying-hens with a low antibiotic usage. In addition faecal samples were examined from three human populations: broiler farmers, laying-hen farmers and poultry slaughterers. MICs of an extended panel of antibiotics for a randomly chosen gentamicin- or vancomycin-resistant enterococcal isolate from each faecal specimen were also determined…

Bronchial hyperresponsiveness in farmers: relation to respiratory symptoms, lung function, and atopy.

There is only limited information on the factors associated with nonspecific bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) in farmers. Our purpose was to examine the relationship between BHR and respiratory symptoms, atopy, and abnormalities of lung function in a sample of French farmers. Farmers scheduled for a preventive medicine check-up in northeastern France were examined. Occupational exposure, respiratory symptoms, and work-related symptoms were assessed by questionnaire, sensitization to 34 common and agricultural allergens by skin prick tests, and BHR by the single-dose (1,200 microg) acetylcho…

Serum IgG antibodies against Wallemia sebi and Fusarium species in Finnish farmers.

BACKGROUND: Wallemia sebi and Fusarium species are common fungi in agricultural environments. Because Fusarium species are difficult to culture, and W. sebi has only recently been found in an agricultural environment with the use of a new culture medium, immunochemical methods may be important for evaluating exposure to these fungi. OBJECTIVE: Immunoglobulin (Ig) G antibodies against W. sebi and two Fusarium species were measured in the sera of Finnish farmers to estimate exposure to fungi. METHODS: Serum-specific IgG antibody levels against the fungi were determined in farmers with farmer's…

[Prevalence of immediate allergy to respiratory allergens in fodder farmers in Doubs].

The Doubs is a damp, semi-mountainous fodder farming department in which occupational respiratory diseases (including asthma) are common in farmers. We studied the prevalence of IgE-mediated allergy (total IgE, Phadiatop and skin prick tests) in a group of 265 exclusive dairy farmers of both sexes of the department and in a control group of non exposed, administrative workers living in the same area. Skin prick tests were: Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Acarus siro, cat hair, cow danders, grass pollens, betullacea pollens (trees from the East of France), and hay extracts from the Doubs. Total…

Incidence and risk factors of low-back pain in middle-aged farmers.

A 12-year follow-up study was carried out to evaluate the risk factors for unspecified low-back pain and sciatic pain. Middle-aged farmers who did not report any low-back or neck-shoulder pain during the previous year in a postal questionnaire in 1979 were included in the follow-up study in 1992 (n = 537). In total, 366 (68%) of these farmers were interviewed by telephone. In 1992, the one-year prevalence rates of unspecified low-back pain (13.3%) and sciatic pain (9.6%) were low. Full-time farmers had a significantly higher prevalence of sciatic pain than did part-time or retired farmers. In …

Primary cutaneous listeriosis in adults: an occupational disease of veterinarians and farmers.

Seventeen cases of cutaneous listeriosis in adults are reviewed. The condition appeared as papular or pustular lesions on the arms or hands, and was most often acquired as an occupational hazard from infected animals. The cases were all mild and were resolved successfully. However, listeric infections are potentially fatal, and as the initial cause of the lesion may be unknown, it is recommended that veterinarians and farmers should have suspect lesions examined microbiologically.

Detection of class-specific antibodies against Micropolyspora faeni antigens in farmers' lung.

Micropolyspora faeni antigens were used for specific IgA, IgG and IgM determination with an ELISA technique, and for specific IgE antibodies by means of RAST in eighteen patients with farmer's lung, in nineteen farmers with other chest conditions, and in twenty-nine controls. The farmers' lung group had significantly higher IgG antibody levels than the controls, while specific IgA levels were elevated in ten cases. Specific IgE and--except for three cases--IgM levels did not differ from the controls. In the group of farmers with other lung diseases, only three had increased levels of specific …

Is syndromic data from rural poultry farmers a viable poultry disease reporting tool and means of identifying likely farmer responses to poultry disease incursion?

Syndromic surveillance is a well described tool used in developed countries for alerting authorities to livestock disease incursions. However, little work has been done to evaluate whether this could be a viable tool in countries where disease reporting infrastructure and resources is poor. Consequently, a syndrome-based questionnaire study in Eastern Zambia was designed to gather data on previous encounters farmers had with poultry diseases, as well as control measures they use to mitigate them. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression were used to analyse the data. Farmers reported an …

Microplastics in Agricultural Crops and Their Possible Impact on Farmers' Health: A Review.

The indiscriminate use of plastic products and their inappropriate management and disposal contribute to the increasing presence and accumulation of this material in all environmental zones. The chemical properties of plastics and their resistance to natural degradation lead over time to the production of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics, which are dispersed in soil, water, and air and can be absorbed by plants, including those grown for food. In agriculture, MPs can come from many sources (mulch film, tractor tires, compost, fertilizers, and pesticides). The possible effects of this type

Infectious Multisegmental Spondylodiscitis in a Swine Farmer: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Insights.

Infectious spondylodiscitis is an infection of the spine that carries considerable clinical and socioeconomic consequences. Its diagnosis and treatment are complex, and the condition is potentially debilitating. Early diagnosis, including microbiological and, ideally, histological assessment of the affected tissue, is essential to quickly initiate the most appropriate therapy. We present the case of a 57-year-old patient, a swine farmer, with multisegmental spondylodiscitis caused by Streptococcus suis. His initial presentation included fever and low back pain. The aim of this clinical case is

Practices of traditional beef farmers in their production and marketing of cattle in Zambia.

Understanding the practices of traditional cattle farmers in developing countries is an important factor in the development of appropriate, pro-poor disease control policies, and in formulating regional-specific production incentives that can improve productivity. This paper describes the production, husbandry practices, economics, and constraints of traditional cattle farming in Zambia. A cross-sectional study design was used to obtain data from traditional cattle farmers (n = 699) using a structured questionnaire. Data analyses were carried out using SPSS and STATA statistical packages. The …

Treatment strategies for sheep scab: An economic model of farmer behaviour.

Ovine psoroptic mange (sheep scab) is a debilitating and damaging condition caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to the faecal material of the parasitic mite Psoroptes ovis. Farmers incur costs from the use of prophylactic acaricides and, if their sheep become infected, they incur the costs of therapeutic treatment plus the economic loss from reduced stock growth, lower reproductive rate, wool loss and hide damage. The unwillingness of farmers to use routine prophylactic treatment has been cited as a primary cause of the growing incidence of sheep scab in the United Kingdom (UK) since the dis…

Community- and farmer-based management of animal African trypanosomosis in cattle.

Tsetse eradication is impossible in many parts of Africa given environmental, political, and economic circumstances. Animal African trypanosomosis (AAT) control then relies on implementation of local, integrated control strategies by communities or farmers that must take into account the eco-epidemiological context and the cattle rearing system to be sustainable.

New evidence of the involvement of Lichtheimia corymbifera in farmer's lung disease.

Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is a form of hypersensitivity pneumonitis resulting from recurrent exposure to moldy plant materials. We investigated and compared the initial response of respiratory epithelium after exposure to extracts of Sacharopolyspora rectivirgula, Lichtheimia corymbifera (formerly Absidia corymbifera), Eurotium amstelodami and Wallemia sebi. The two criteria for selection of these species were their high prevalence in the hay handled by FLD patients and the presence of high levels of specific precipitins to these molds in FLD patients’ sera. Hydrosoluble extracts were
