Experiments on chickens of different age groups (one day--1 months) from large poultry plants of the Kiev Region established that metabolic acidosis develops in chickens at the age of 10-30 days. Compensated alkalosis is observed in them at the age of two months and further. In chickens whose HCO3- level in blood is 15-18 mM/l the content of uric acid in the liver and blood increases as compared to the control (HCO3- --23 mM/l); they also differ in a high intensity of the growth. A rise of the HCO3- concentration in chicken blood up to 33 mM/l favours a still greater decrease in the level of u

The effect of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) level on reproductive parameters and milk production in pluriparous dairy cows was examined. The study was conducted on 231 Holstein-Friesian cows from the second to eighth lactation. Serum BHB was measured at 7 days in milk (DIM) with a Precision Xceed® BHBA meter and divided into positive (BHB ≥1.2 nmol/L) and negative (BHB < 1.2 nmol/L) groups for BHB levels. No differences between groups were detected for median days open (138 days), days open to first service (65 vs. 64 d), or all service conception rate (37.5% vs 37.6%). However, there was a trend (P

BACKGROUND: There has been an increasing focus in recent years on health-care disparities. Studies investigating return to work (RTW) or sports are often performed in large, urban areas. Relatively few studies have investigated rates of return to farming or other heavy labor that is of interest to patients in rural areas.
AIM: To evaluate the literature regarding RTW in farming or heavy labor after orthopedic hip, knee, or shoulder surgery.
METHODS: A search was performed in the PubMed and EMBASE databases using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. S

The rapid expansion of cervid farming raises concerns about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) dissemination, yet its impact on the Cervidae gut microbiome remains poorly characterized. We integrated 89 newly sequenced fecal metagenomes with 599 publicly available datasets, comprising 285 metagenomes from farmed cervids and 370 from wild cervids, to construct a catalog of 15,494 non-redundant metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) representing 2,401 species. Our analysis demonstrates that farming profoundly reshapes the gut microbiome's functional composition. Specifically, farmed cervids exhibited s

Alpacas have gained increasing popularity in Poland; however, no official national standards for their husbandry have yet been established. This study aimed to evaluate alpaca husbandry practices on Polish farms using an anonymous questionnaire. A total of 44 farms were included in the analysis, all of which kept alpacas, while only 9.1% also maintained llamas. A high level of adherence to preventive healthcare practices was observed, with regular deworming implemented on 90.9% of farms and vaccination reported by all respondents. Dietary supplementation was also widely practised, with vitamin…

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) constitutes a pressing and intensifying global health crisis, significantly exacerbated by the inappropriate utilization and excessive application of antibiotics in livestock agriculture. The excessive use of antibiotics, including prophylactic and metaphylactic administration as well as growth-promotion applications, exacerbates selective pressures, fostering the proliferation of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains. Pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus can be transmitted to humans through direct contact, contamin

American mink (Neogale vison) are known carriers of various viruses, including many zoonoses. Their susceptibility to a wide range of pathogens and anatomical similarities to human lungs raise concerns about their potential role in facilitating interspecies transmission. Here we analysed viruses detected in tissue samples of native mustelids, and feral and farmed mink in Poland (2019-2022). The species included American mink, pine and stone marten (Martes martes, Martes foina), weasel (Mustela nivalis), European badger (Meles meles), European polecat (Mustela putorius), and Eurasian otter (Lut

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and a leading cause of dementia, profoundly affecting individuals worldwide. However, there are limited therapeutic approaches to treat AD, with current approaches primarily focused on providing symptomatic relief rather than halting the disease progression, highlighting the need for alternative strategies. Nutraceuticals, which are derived from natural sources, offer a promising alternative because of their multi-targeted mechanisms that modulate inflammation, oxidative stress and neurodegeneration, addressing key symptoms of

The hard tick Ixodes ricinus transmits a variety of zoonotic pathogens, including Babesia divergens, the most common cause of bovine babesiosis in northern Europe. In endemic areas, cattle are rarely clinically affected, as animals up to the age of nine months are resistant against relevant clinical disease and develop protective premunity. However, outbreaks in immunologically naïve herds may lead to considerable losses. Such an outbreak with a high mortality rate occurred in 2018 on a northern German beef production farm, as previously reported. The present study provides an update on the ep

Fowl typhoid is a septicemic disease caused by Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Gallinarum. It is a host-specific disease primarily affecting chickens and turkeys, although it has been reported in various animal species and sporadically in humans. Here, we present a case of a fowl typhoid outbreak on a turkey poult farm where the source of infection was the hatchery. The birds started showing symptoms of growth retardation at 21 days of age, after which the mortality rates gradually started to increase. Post mortem examination revealed that the main lesions were gr

This study aims at the identification of endo- and ectoparasites in broiler farms while assessing their prevalence in semi-open and closed rearing systems in Lebanon. Seventeen semi-open and six closed broiler farms were investigated in various Lebanese provinces between March and September 2020 and 2021. Intestinal and composite litter samples were collected and observed for morphological identification of prevalent parasites. Results notably revealed the prevalence of mites in all of the surveyed farms. Moreover, mixed mite-helminth infestation was recorded in 100% of the semi-open farms and…

Magnesium (Mg) is a mineral that plays an essential role as cofactor of more than 300 enzymes. Mg in farm animals' and human nutrition is recommended to avoid Mg deficiency, ensure adequate growth and health maintenance. Mg supplementation above the estimated minimum requirements is the best practice to improve farm animals' performances (fertility and yield) and food products' quality, since the performance of farm animals has grown in recent decades. Mg supplementation in pigs increases meat quality and sows' fertility; in poultry, it helps to avoid deficiency-related health conditions and t

(1) Describe knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever, VF) reported by farm workers in a highly endemic area to design and evaluate prevention messages and (2) identify health information sources preferred by farm workers to disseminate VF prevention messages. There were 119 primarily Mexican-born residents of two migrant farm labor housing centers in Kern County, who completed an interviewer-administered survey on VF knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors in 2017. The 73% of participants aware of VF demonstrated a knowledge score of 53%. O

In animal husbandry, antimicrobial agents have been administered as supplements to increase production over the last 60 years. Large-scale animal production has increased the importance of antibiotic management because it may favor the evolution of antimicrobial resistance and select resistant strains. Brazil is a significant producer and exporter of animal-derived food. Although Brazil is still preparing a national surveillance plan, several changes in legislation and timely programs have been implemented. Thus, Brazilian data on antimicrobial resistance in bacteria associated with animals co

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious threats for human health in the near future. Livestock has played an important role in the appearance of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, intestinal dysbiosis in farming animals, or the spread of AMR among pathogenic bacteria of human concern. The development of alternatives like probiotics is focused on maintaining or improving production levels while diminishing these negative effects of antibiotics. To this end, we supplied the potential probiotic Enterococcus faecalis UGRA10 in the diet of laying hens at a final concentration of 108 C
