Mitigation of variability between competitively fed dairy cows through increased feed delivery frequency.

The objective of this study was to determine whether increased frequency of total mixed ration (TMR) delivery could mitigate the effects of … w (2×/d) and high (6×/d) frequency. Treatments were applied for 10 d, with dry matter intake (DMI), feeding behavior (feeding time, feeding rate, and meal patterns), and replacement frequency for each cow recorded using an automated feed intake system on d 6 to 10 of each period. Rumination time, feed sorting, lying behavior, and productivity were also measured fo …

Cognitive behavior therapy for eating disorders versus normalization of eating behavior.

We examine the science and evidence supporting cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa and other eating disorders. Recent trials focusing on the abnormal cognitive and emotional aspects of bulimia have reported a remission rate of about 45%, and a relapse rate of about 30% within one year. However, an early CBT trial that emphasized the normalization of eating behavior had a better outcome than treatment that focused on cognitive intervention. In support of this finding, another treatment, that restores a normal eating behavior using mealtime feedback, has an esti

Voluntary wheel running access produces opposite effects in male and female rats on both palatable diet consumption and associated ventral striatal opioid- and dopamine-related gene expression.

The relationship between physical activity levels and feeding behaviors has been a focus of preclinical research for decades, yet this interaction has only recently been explored for potential sex differences. The aim of the present study was to isolate sex-dependent effects of voluntary wheel running (RUN) vs. sedentary locked wheel (SED) home cage conditions on palatability-driven feeding behavior using a 2-diet choice task between standard chow and a high-fat diet. The sex-dependent effects of physical activity on feeding behavior were examined following a within-subject novel reversal desi…

Blood meal analysis of Anopheles vectors of simian malaria based on laboratory and field studies.

Blood feeding and host-seeking behaviors of a mosquito play an imperative role in determining its vectorial capacity in transmitting pathogens. Unfortunately, limited information is available regarding blood feeding behavior of Anopheles species in Malaysia. Collection of resting Anopheles mosquitoes for blood meal analysis poses a great challenge especially for forest dwelling mosquitoes. Therefore, a laboratory-based study was conducted to evaluate the potential use of mosquitoes caught using human landing catch (HLC) for blood meal analysis, and subsequently to document blood feeding behavi…

Effect of kami-untan-to on the impairment of learning and memory induced by thiamine-deficient feeding in mice.

We have recently reported that thiamine deficient (TD) mice show an impairment of learning and memory on the 20th day after start of TD feeding. Interestingly, it has been reported that the kampo medicine, "kami-untan-to" (KUT) may be useful as a potential therapeutic agent in diseases associated with cholinergic deficit such as Alzheimer's disease. In the present study, we investigated the effects of KUT on the impairment of memory-related behavior concomitant with psychoneuronal symptoms after TD feeding in mice. Oral administration of KUT had no effect on the food intake, body weight or loc

Behavioral changes before metritis diagnosis in dairy cows.

Metritis is common in the days after calving and can reduce milk production and reproductive performance. The aim of this study was to identify changes in feeding and social behavior at the feed bunk, as well as changes in lying behavior before metritis diagnosis. Initially healthy Holstein cows were followed from 3 wk before to 3 wk after calving. Behaviors at the feed bunk were recorded using an electronic feeding system. Lying behavior was recorded using data loggers. Metritis, based upon the characteristics of vaginal discharge at d 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 after calving, was diagnosed in 74 oth

Preventive effect of kami-untan-to on performance in the forced swimming test in thiamine-deficient mice: relationship to functions of catecholaminergic neurons.

The kampo (Japanese herbal) medicine "kami-untan-to" (KUT) has been used for a long time in the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders. We have recently reported that mice put on a thiamine-deficient (TD) diet exhibit a depressive behavior and impairment in avoidance learning after 20 days, and that this impairment was reversed by the chronic administration of KUT. In the present study, we investigated the effect of KUT on the depressive behavior observed in TD mice by using the forced swimming test. Our results show that oral administration of KUT from the 1st day of TD feeding prevented the

Stereotypic behavior and heart rate in pigs.

Heart rate responses to feeding of both loose-housed and tethered sows, some of which engaged in persistent behavioral stereotypies, were recorded telemetrically in order to determine if stereotypic behavior occurs in response to, and serves to reduce increased sympathetic nervous activity. Heart rates rose in response to feeding (after which stereotypic behavior is most common) and this was greater for tethered sows. This response was partly blocked by a beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist (carazolol), but not by naloxone, although the latter tended to lead to overall increases in heart rate. Thus

Definition and diagnostic criteria for orthorexia nervosa: a narrative review of the literature.

AIM: In some cases, detrimental consequences on health are generated by self-imposed dietary rules intended to promote health. The pursuit of an "extreme dietary purity" due to an exaggerated focus on food may lead to a disordered eating behavior called "orthorexia nervosa" (ON). ON raises a growing interest, but at present there is no universally shared definition of ON, the diagnostic criteria are under debate, and the psychometric instruments used in the literature revealed some flaws. This narrative review of the literature aims at assessing state of the art in ON definition, diagnostic cr

Oleoylethanolamide: effects on hypothalamic transmitters and gut peptides regulating food intake.

Recently, it has been described the role of fatty acid ethanolamides in the control of feeding behavior. Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) is a member of this family of lipid mediators regulating feeding. OEA acts suppressing feeding behavior through, at least partially, a peripheral mechanism. However, the interaction between this acylethanolamide and other orexigenic or anorexigenic mediators is mostly not well characterized. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether anorectic actions of OEA were mediated through the modulation of central and peripheral signals involved in the regulation of feedi…

Intermittent access to a nutritionally complete high-fat diet attenuates alcohol drinking in rats.

Binge eating disorder and alcohol use disorder (AUD) frequently co-occur in the presence of other psychiatric conditions. Data suggest that binge eating engages similar behavioral and neurochemical processes common to AUD, which might contribute to the etiology or maintenance of alcoholism. However, it is unclear how binge feeding behavior and alcohol intake interact to promote initiation or maintenance of AUD. We investigated the impact of binge-like feeding on alcohol intake and anxiety-like behavior in male Long Evans rats. Rats received chow (controls) or extended intermittent access (24h …

Microdosing ketamine in Drosophila does not block serotonin reuptake, but causes complex behavioral changes mediated by glutamate and serotonin receptors.

Microdosing ketamine is a novel antidepressant for treatment-resistant depression. Traditional antidepressants, like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), inhibit serotonin reuptake, but it is not clear if ketamine shows a similar mechanism. Here, we tested the effects of feeding ketamine and SSRIs to Drosophila melanogaster larvae, which has a similar serotonin system to mammals and is a good model to track depressive behaviors, such as locomotion and feeding. Fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) was used to measure optogenetically stimulated serotonin changes, and locomotion tracki

Soybean molasses to replace corn for feedlot lambs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and meat quality.

Soybean molasses (SBM) is a byproduct of the manufacture of soy protein concentrate and has high energy value. This byproduct has a high potential for use in the nutrition of ruminant animals, mainly in the replacement of other energy feeds such as corn grain. The objective of this study was to evaluate the inclusion of SBM to replace corn grain up to 30% dry matter (DM) in the total diet on growth performance, feeding behavior, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of feedlot lambs (½ Santa Inês × ½ Dorper). Forty intact male lambs with an initial average body weight of 20.6 ± 2.5 kg and …

Obesity Disrupts CtBP2-Mediated Maintenance of Transcriptional Equilibrium in Hypothalamic Feeding Circuitry.

Feeding behavior, which is crucial for all mammals, is regulated by a delicate equilibrium between the orexigenic and anorexigenic activities of hypothalamic neurons. This exquisite control of the neuropeptides that govern the feeding behavior could be a focal point in the pathogenesis of obesity. We reported that inactivation of C-terminal binding protein 2 (CtBP2), a transcriptional corepressor with metabolite-sensing capabilities, contributes to the pathogenesis of obesity in liver tissues and pancreatic β-cells. Here, we describe a transcriptional system regulated by CtBP2 in the hypothala…

A single incidental dark pulse during daytime attenuated food anticipatory behavior.

Using an open-source operant feeding device (FED3), we measured food-seeking nose poking behavior in mice. When the mice were exposed to 4 h restricted feeding at night, all mice exhibited robust food anticipatory nose poking starting ~4 h before scheduled mealtime. When the light-dark cycle was advanced by 6 h, mice exhibited two distinct bouts of anticipatory poking, one corresponding to actual mealtime which continued at the same time of day, and one corresponding to predicted mealtime which shifted parallel with the light-dark cycle. Likewise, two similar bouts of food-seeking behavior app

microRNA-33 controls hunger signaling in hypothalamic AgRP neurons.

AgRP neurons drive hunger, and excessive nutrient intake is the primary driver of obesity and associated metabolic disorders. While many factors impacting central regulation of feeding behavior have been established, the role of microRNAs in this process is poorly understood. Utilizing unique mouse models, we demonstrate that miR-33 plays a critical role in the regulation of AgRP neurons, and that loss of miR-33 leads to increased feeding, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction in mice. These effects include the regulation of multiple miR-33 target genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis and fa…
