Parental feeding practices and child weight status in Mexican American families: a longitudinal analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parental feeding practices are thought to influence children's weight status, through children's eating behavior and nutritional intake. However, because most studies have been cross-sectional, the direction of influence is unclear. Moreover, although obesity rates are high among Latino children, few studies of parental feeding practices have focused on this population. METHODS: This 2-year longitudinal study examined mutual influences over time between parental feeding practices and children's weight status, in Mexican American families with children 18 years old at baseline. Diarrhea in tube-fed patients: feeding formula not necessarily the cause.

PURPOSE: This study of diarrhea in tube-fed patients was undertaken to determine the proportion of cases in which feeding formula is not responsible for the diarrhea, the causes other than the feeding formula, and the diagnostic approach to diarrhea in tube-fed patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Inpatients at the Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital who received nasoenteric feeding during the time period from October 1986 through May 1988 were eligible for this study. Of 123 patients who received nasoenteric feeding, 32 patients had documented diarrhea (greater than 500 mL per day for at least two

Breast feeding and the development of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) are less likely to have been breast fed than controls. METHODS: Case-control study of data obtained from a survey of mothers 54 children with JRA and 79 playmates regarding breast feeding. Duration of breast feeding was tabulated and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were determined. RESULTS: OR for breast feeding in children with JRA was 0.40 (0.20-0.81, 95% CI) compared to playmates. For pauciarticular JRA (N = 28) OR was 0.31 (0.10-0.93); in polyarticular JRA (N = 24) OR was 0.60 (0.21-1.70). Lo

Incidence of gastroesophageal reflux during transpyloric feeds.

OBJECTIVES: Transpyloric feeding has been proposed as an alternative method for controlling gastroesophageal reflux, but there have been no pediatric studies to determine how transpyloric feeding affects reflux burden. The aim of the present study was to determine the reflux burden in patients receiving transpyloric feeds. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We reviewed the multichannel intraluminal impedance tracings of patients who had persistent symptoms and were fed transpylorically during the multichannel intraluminal impedance recording. We compared the reflux profiles during feed and nonfeed periods

Long-term efficacy of a tongue tie service in improving breast feeding rates: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Breast feeding rates in England at 3months of age are approximately 17% for exclusive breast-feeding and 55% for breast-feeds supplemented with formula. Tongue-tie (TT) in infants is cited as a significant cause of difficulty with maintaining breast-feeding. Early treatment and support can improve breast-feeding and allow infants to benefit from the many long-term benefits of breast-feeding. Our aim was to determine BF rates in infants 3months after attending our tongue-tie clinic (TTC). METHODS: Institutional ethical approval and study approval were obtained. Patients attending t

[Patient satisfaction and duration of breast feeding].

INTRODUCTION: Only two out of three Danish women follow the recommendations for duration of breast-feeding given by The Danish National Board of Health, which recommend it as the sole source of nutrition for at least the first four months of life. The present study was carried out to investigate the influence of patient satisfaction on the duration of breast-feeding. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Based on an earlier investigation into the satisfaction of primiparas with the public health service during pregnancy, delivery, and the puerperium, 145 women were interviewed by telephone about the period i

Prospective study of breast-feeding in relation to wheeze, atopy, and bronchial hyperresponsiveness in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC).

BACKGROUND: Breast-feeding clearly protects against early wheezing, but recent data suggest that it might increase later risk of atopic disease and asthma. OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine the relationship between breast-feeding and later asthma and allergy outcomes by using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a large birth cohort in the United Kingdom. METHODS: We used adjusted logistic regression models to evaluate the association between breast-feeding and atopy at age 7 years, bronchial responsiveness to methacholine at age 8 years, and wheeze at ages 3 and 7 1/

Reducing Postpyloric Feeding Start Times in Patients With Large Hemispheric Infarction Receiving Therapeutic Hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Early postpyloric feeding provides effective and safe enteral nutrition for patients with large hemispheric infarction receiving therapeutic hypothermia. LOCAL PROBLEM: Patients with large hemispheric infarction undergoing therapeutic hypothermia often have gastrointestinal dysfunction and undergo repeated bedside attempts at blind postpyloric feeding tube placement. Confirming tube position via radiography can delay nutrient intake, increase costs, and expose patients to unnecessary radiation. METHODS: In this quality improvement study, specialist nurses were trained to use ultr

Preoperative Feeding Neonates With Cardiac Disease.

BACKGROUND: The potential for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in neonates requiring cardiac surgery has contributed largely to wide feeding practice variations and a hesitation to initiate enteral feeding during the preoperative period, specifically those patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of neonates undergoing cardiac surgery at a single institution between July 2011 and July 2013 was performed. The primary objective of this study was to determine if preoperative feeding was associated with NEC in neonates requiring cardiac surgery. Univaria
