Previous studies on sural nerves were extended to human femoral, ulnar, facial and trochlear nerves. As asynchronous development of axon diameter and myelin sheath thickness was noted in all nerves studied. Whereas axons reach their maximal diameter by or before 5 years of age, maximal myelin sheath thickness is not attained before 16-17 years of age, i.e., more than 10 years later. The slope of the regression lines for the ratio between axon diameter and myelin thickness is significantly steeper in older than in younger individuals; it also differs if small and large fibers with more or less

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report the incidence, severity, and factors associated with femoral nerve injury during gynecologic cancer surgery.
METHODS: All patients who underwent abdominal surgery for gynecologic cancer entered the study. A retrospective review of the medical records was carried out for patients operated on from 2003 to April 2011. After this analysis, the use of the Bookwalter retractor was modified and the data were prospectively recorded.
RESULTS: In the first period, femoral nerve injury was observed in 11 (2.7%) of 406 patients, occurring with a significant

BACKGROUND: Although injury to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) is a known complication of anterior approaches to the hip and pelvis, no study has quantified its' incidence in anterior arthroplasty procedures.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore defined the incidence, functional impact, and natural history of LFCN neuropraxia after an anterior approach for both hip resurfacing (HR) and primary total hip arthroplasty (THA).
METHODS: We followed 132 patients who underwent an anterior hip approach (55 THA; 77 HR). We administered self-reported questionnaires for sensory deficits of LFCN,

Japanese rope bondage (RB), or Shibari, is an art form involving the voluntary and aesthetic binding of a person with a rope, which may result in compression injuries to peripheral nerves. To investigate the nature and extent of nerve injuries associated with this practice, we conducted a survey of four experienced RB practitioners (riggers) and participants who were willing to share their experiences of injury. Injuries presented acutely and immediately following full-body suspensions, with a total of 10 individuals (16 injuries) identified with damage to the radial, axillary, or femoral nerv

BACKGROUND: Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a recognized complication following bariatric surgery, yet its risk factors remain poorly defined. This study aimed to investigate the incidence of MP after laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) in patients with obesity and to identify its independent risk factors.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent LSG under general anesthesia at our institution between May 2020 and August 2024. Patients were divided into MP and non-MP groups based on postoperative occurrence. Propensity score matching (PSM) with a 1:4 ratio

We discuss the case of a 27-month-old girl afflicted with fibromuscular dysplasia. She presented with hemiatrophy of left upper and lower limbs, nail dystrophy, ulcers on the tips of her toes, cold and painful limbs, foot drop, and hypertension. The initial appearance started at 2 months of age and other diagnoses such as complex regional pain syndrome, reflex sympathetic syndrome, vasculitis and coagulation disorders had been considered. Angiography revealed that all the arterial branches of the left lower and upper limbs, from brachial to ulnar and radial, and from iliac and femoral to tibia

A 44-year-old female with paraesthesia and pain on the left anterolateral thigh who had been diagnosed with limb-girdle muscular dystrophy by electromyography and muscle biopsy is presented. Neurological examination revealed atrophy of the proximal muscles of both shoulders, plus pseudo hypertrophy of both calves. Electromyography exhibited a myopathic pattern. Musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging demonstrated a fusiform nerve swelling below the inguinal ligament suggesting lateral femoral cutaneous nerve compression, consistent with meralgia paraesthetica. Treatment with a perineural injection

This case report describes a 54-year-old Hispanic male who developed femoral nerve palsy approximately 1 year after metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MOM THA). Cobalt and chromium levels were 4.8 ppb and undetectable, respectively. MRI demonstrated a well-encapsulated pseudotumor that communicated with the anterior portion of the right hip, and EMG showed neuropraxic femoral nerve injury. As a result, the patient experienced motor and sensory loss in the femoral and proximal saphenous nerve distributions. Surgical revision to ceramic-on-poly THA with debridement and decompression of the p

Anterior extraperitoneal exposures to the lumbar spine are being increasingly used owing to the expanding use of novel technologies to treat degenerative disc disease. Lumbar plexus injuries are potential, albeit uncommon, complications of such exposures and can lead to significant perioperative morbidity. In this report, we present three patients with thoracolumbar fractures who sustained isolated femoral nerve palsies after a mini-open extraperitoneal approach to the midlumbar spine was undertaken to perform a partial corpectomy. To further understand the pathophysiology of this nerve injury

INTRODUCTION: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for primary and revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) has been growing in popularity due to reported less soft tissue disruption, less post-operative pain, earlier post-operative functional recovery, and lower dislocation rate. One potential complication of this approach is damage to the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). The incidence of damage to the LFCN in the literature ranges from 14.8% to 81%. Documented treatments consist mainly of conservative measures; however, here, we describe a case where operative intervention was pursued due

Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is a relatively uncommon neuropathy caused by compression or injury of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN), which provides sensory innervation to the anterolateral thigh. While sensory symptoms during active MP are well described, long-term alterations in sensation following recovery have rarely been reported. Here, we present the case of a 79-year-old man who developed a highly localized, reproducible, and intensely pleasurable tingling sensation over the external aspect of his left thigh following full resolution of MP. Remarkably, this sensation emerged con

Diabetes mellitus causes hyperglycemia due to resistance to insulin action in peripheral organs in addition to progressive loss of β-cell function, thus it is involved in the development and progression of diabetic microangiopathy(retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy). In addition, abnormalities of bone metabolism is regarded as a chronic complication related to both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Accumulating evidence suggests that type 1 diabetes patients had decreased bone mineral density(BMD)and the fracture risk in the femoral neck is markedly higher, when compared to non-diabet

Alcoholism has been associated with growth impairment, osteomalacia, delayed fracture healing, and aseptic necrosis (primarily necrosis of the femoral head), but the main alterations observed in the bones of alcoholic patients are osteoporosis and an increased risk of fractures. Decreased bone mass is a hallmark of osteoporosis, and it may be due either to decreased bone synthesis and/or to increased bone breakdown. Ethanol may affect both mechanisms. It is generally accepted that ethanol decreases bone synthesis, and most authors have reported decreased osteocalcin levels (a "marker" of bone

At present the pathogenesis of CMT1A neuropathy, caused by the overexpression of PMP22, has not yet been entirely understood. The PMP22-overexpressing C61 mutant mouse is a suitable animal model, which mimics the human CMT1A disorder. We observed that myelin gene expression in the sciatic nerve of the C61 mouse was up-regulated at postnatal day 4 to 7 (P4-P7). When investigating the morphology of peripheral nerves in C61 and wildtype mice at early stages of postnatal development, hypermyelination could be detected in the femoral quadriceps and sciatic nerve of transgenic animals at postnatal d

UNLABELLED: The objective of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone mineral density (BMD) for identifying vertebral fractures (VFx) in well-compensated type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients. TBS and femoral neck BMD below certain cutoffs may be useful for identifying VFx in well-compensated T2D patients.
INTRODUCTION: In T2D, the prevalence of VFx is increased, especially in poorly compensated and complicated diabetic patients. The possibility of predicting the fracture risk in T2D patients by measuring BMD and TBS, an indirect parameter of bone quality, is

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) the most common chronic complication in type 1 and type 2 diabetes due to metabolic dysregulation and nerve ischemia. affects 19-34 % of diabetic patients with limited treatment options. This research aimed to explore the therapeutic potential of UFP-101, a nociceptible/orphanin FQ-N/OFQ receptor (NOPR) antagonist, in DPN. Thirty male Sprague - Dawley rats were divided into five groups: control, DPN model, and three DPN groups treated with different doses of UFP-101 (0.01 mg/kg, 0.03 mg/kg, 0.1 mg/kg). Human umbilical vein endothelial cells were also split

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease type 1A (CMT1A), the most common inherited demyelinating peripheral neuropathy, is caused by PMP22 gene duplication. Overexpression of WT PMP22 in Schwann cells destabilizes the myelin sheath, leading to demyelination and ultimately to secondary axonal loss and disability. No treatments currently exist that modify the disease course. The most direct route to CMT1A therapy will involve reducing PMP22 to normal levels. To accomplish this, we developed a gene therapy strategy to reduce PMP22 using artificial miRNAs targeting human PMP22 and mouse Pmp22 mRNAs. Our lead

BACKGROUND: The fabella is a sesamoid bone situated in the tendon of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius muscle behind the lateral femoral condyle. Common fibular nerve injury may occur anywhere on its course and the most common etiology remains compression at the level of the head of the fibula. Compression by a fabella is a very unusual cause of common fibular nerve palsy and only few case reports are described in the literature. We present here an illustrative case.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 50-year-old female patient presented with a left drop-foot evolving for two weeks without pain or senso
