This study determined the areal bone mineral density (BMD) from the lumbar spine (L2-4), right distal radius and ulna, and the femoral neck, trochanter area of the femur, distal femur, patella, proximal tibia, and calcaneus of both extremities in 29 men who had a femur shaft fracture 10 years earlier. For evaluation of the patients' BMDs in the spine and distal forearm, 29 age-, weight-, and height-matched normal men were also measured. Compared with normal men (mean +/- SD = 1.123 +/- 0.153), the spinal BMDs of the patients were significantly (p = 0.0054) lower (1.018 +/- 0.119, -9.3%). Dista

OBJECTIVE: Compared with total hip replacement, conventional collum femoris preserving prosthesis has a better bone retention effect. However, damage to the trabecular bone of the proximal femur leads to inevitable abnormal stress distribution, which leads to increased risks of femoral neck bone absorption, periprosthetic fracture, prosthesis loosening, rotation, and sinking. Thus, we compare the biomechanical properties of collum femoris preserving (CFP) and bionic collum femoris preserving (BCFP) hip prostheses.

PURPOSE: Three-dimensional (3D) effects of the single plane osteotomies of the proximal femur are compared and analyzed by the trigonometric method.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The shape of proximal femur was simplified as a bent line. The bent line is the continuation of the three points-the center of the femoral head, the center of femoral neck at the base, and the center of the femoral shaft. Then rotated the proximal femur at the junction of the neck and shaft with the each rotation axis of X, Y, Z, defined the frontal plane as a XY plane, sagittal plane as a YZ plane, and transverse plane as

As with other diseases that show exponentially increasing rates, hip fracture probably requires multiple prior events to become manifest. It is common ground that there are genetic, environmental, lifestyle and perhaps dietary determinants of risk of osteoporotic fracture as well as interactions between them. The key to secondary prevention is the understanding of how these components can be integrated into an effective assessment of the major risks of hip fracture after a previous fracture has occurred. The key to primary prevention is to understand both the pathological and physiological bas

BACKGROUND: Non-union of neck femur is a common but difficult situation to manage especially in young adults. There are two main options of arthroplasty or osteotomy. The aim of this study was to assess the results of intertrochanteric valgus osteotomy in non-union femoral neck fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We present a study of 44 cases of neck femur non-union including untreated fractures, late presentations (more than 3 weeks), treated with compression screw, DHS. From 2006-2016, 44 patients presented to our institute and we analyzed them prospectively on the following criteria: Pauwel'

BACKGROUND: Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is considered a bone-preserving procedure and may eliminate proximal femoral stress shielding and osteolysis. However, in addition to implant-related stress-shielding factors, various patient-related factors may also have an effect on bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal femur in patients with HRA. Thus, we studied the effects of stem-neck angle, demographic variables, and physical functioning on the BMD of the proximal femur in a one-year follow-up.
METHODS: Thirty three patients (9 females and 24 males) with a mean (SD) age of 55 (9) year

The fibula flap is commonly used to reconstruct the tibia. This has risk of postoperative fracture despite long-term non-weight bearing. A flap using noncircumferential distal femur is proposed. This study is to determine the circumference of femur required to produce greater strength than the fibular flap. Femurs and fibulas were harvested from eight cadavers. The structural strength of fibula and femur flaps was assessed using three-point bend. Compression testing was performed on osteotomized and whole femurs to assess donor site morbidity. The 35% flap (mean maximum force at fracture 869 N

Forty patients with unilateral osteoarthritis of the hip were studied with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to quantify disuse osteopenia in their affected leg by examining the proximal femur and tibia. Bone loss was assessed as a percentage of the contralateral value which compares bone mineral density of the affected and normal sides. The percentage contralateral value in the femoral neck and Ward's triangle was 113% and 118% respectively, while that in the tibia was 75%. Bone loss in the proximal tibia of the affected leg could be of value in assessing gait since it correlates with the gait

Background: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head often requires surgical treatment and is often associated with femoral neck fractures. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of recent research on the risk of AVN following the stabilization of fractured femoral neck with implants in PubMed. We assessed the effect of age on AVN incidence among patients aged > 50 and younger, depending on fracture type, Garden stage, Pouwels degree, Delbet stage, and age category. We followed PRISMA guidelines. Relevant studies were defined as research articles describing real-world studies r

This study was conducted to assess the relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and bone mineral density (BMD) in Korean postmenopausal women with mild renal dysfunction. A total of 328 postmenopausal women who underwent BMD measurement during health check-up was investigated. BMD was measured in lumbar spine (L1-L4), femoral neck, total proximal femur and femoral trochanteric areas by dual energy radiography absorptiometry and renal function was estimated by eGFR using Cockcroft-Gault equation. Of the 328 subjects, 317 (96.6%) had an eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m(2). By using

Background and Objectives: Currently, only patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH), who had bone defects involving 30-33.3% of the remaining femoral head, are indicated in hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). In an experimental cadaver model of ONFH involving up to 50% of the remaining femoral head, the initial stability of the femoral head implant (FHI) at the interface between the implant and the remaining femoral head was measured. Materials and Methods: The ten specimens and the remaining ten served as the experimental group and the control group, respectively. We examined th

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine (1) variations in the shape of the proximal, middle, and distal femur in a series of Korean patients who had undergone total knee arthroplasty (TKA), (2) the preoperative relationship between these three parameters and the distal valgus cutting angle referenced off the femoral intramedullary guide, and (3) whether there was any relationship between femoral bowing and variations in the shape of the proximal or distal femur in the coronal plane.
METHODS: The preoperative long-standing anteroposterior radiographs of 316 consecutive osteoarthritis p

OBJECTIVE: Non-traumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONF) is considered to be a disease that occurs primarily due to ischemia of the femoral head, while its etiology and pathology are not fully understood. It is therefore necessary to identify the characteristics of the hemodynamics of the femoral head. In this study, the hemodynamics in the ilium and proximal regions of the femur, including the femoral head, was investigated using positron emission tomography (PET).
METHODS: The subjects of this study consisted of 8 hip joints of four healthy male adults and 3 hip joints on the contra

PURPOSE: There is no specific literature on the best implantation position of the Femoral Neck System (FNS) for treating Pauwels type III femoral neck fracture in young adults.
METHODS: Use finite-element analysis to compare the mechanical properties of implantation positions: FNS in the central position, FNS in the low position, and FNS in the low position combined with cannulated screw (CS). The CT data of the femur were imported into the mimics20.0 to obtain the three-dimensional model of the femur; imported into geomagic2017 and SolidWorks 2017 for optimizations; models of FNS and CS are
