Esophageal lesions due to treatment with medication in the form of tablets are frequent. The authors report the case of a 10 year-old child who presented with extended mucosal necrosis of the esophagus after having been given a tablet of Rhinasal in the evening, without concomitant ingestion of water. A fiberoptic endoscopy was performed 3 days after the onset and showed the recovery of the mucosal inflammatory lesions, without local or general treatment, allowing oral feeding of the child after the 4th day.

It is known that intravitreal illumination during vitrectomy improves both contrast and resolution for the surgeon by eliminating backscatter and reflections from both cornea and lens. The experiments described in this paper set out to quantitate the amount of improvement in these optical parameters using simulated intravitreal illumination when a target was viewed behind a cataractous lens. Endoscopic ultrasonography was performed in 30 patients using the prototype ultrasound fiberoptic endoscope (Model GF- UM1 , Olympus Corporation) with the objective of developing technique, assessing instrument performance, and familiarization with the capabilities of endoscopic ultrasonography. To assess the diagnostic yield of flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB), we reviewed records of 30 patients who had (1) cultural and/or histologic evidence of coccidioidomycosis, (2) abnormal chest roentgenograms, and (3) undergone FFB. Each patient underwent a complete examination including sputum collection for smears and culture. As additional diagnostic information was needed, FFB was performed in all patients, followed by percutaneous needle aspiration in 4 patients and thoracotomy in 10. Blind suction small intestinal biopsy is still the classical method in establishing the diagnosis of Whipple's disease. Duodenal endoscopy with directed biopsy seems however to be a better alternative after the description, in recent years, of a characteristic endoscopic picture of Whipple's disease. In clinically suspected cases, biopsy from other parts of the small intestine may be rewarding if the duodenal biopsy is negative. A case of Whipple's disease, diagnosed by duodenal biopsy, is reported and the relevant literature is discussed.

The records of patients who had transbronchial lung biopsy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center between January 1974 and September 1977 were retrospectively reviewed. Nine patients were found whose clinical and radiographic presentations were compatible with lymphangitic carcinomatosis. Since 1974 the authors have used fibre optics of Olympus, Tokyo, particular the models BF Type 4B and BF Type 3A applicable for children. Even in children, tube bronchoscopy can not at all be replaced by fibre optic bronchoscopy. By fibre optic bronchoscopy diagnostics may by improved considerably. Laryngotracheoscopy proved to be of special advantage in newborns with the sign of stridor. Fibre optic bronchoscopy should be used as a supplementary procedure in bronchological centres for children.

Pressure-flow relationships of an artificial airway-mechanical ventilator system were investigated. Endotracheal tubes varying from 7 to 9.5 mm. internal diameter and tracheostomy tubes from 7 to 10 mm. internal diameter were tested over flow-rates from 0.3 to 1.4 L. per second using a tidal volume of 500 ml. Fibergastroscopy and direct-vision gastric biopsy were performed in 47 patients who had a prepyloric or antral gastric lesion on barium meal (single-contrast) examination. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The use of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-measured retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in neuro-ophthalmic disease has grown since its first use in glaucoma and retinal diseases. OCT-measured RNFL in nonglaucomatous optic neuropathies shows thinning, which may mimic those seen in glaucoma. This article aims to provide insight regarding the use of OCT in nonglaucomatous optic neuropathies and sheds light on common patterns of RNFL loss in different nonglaucomatous optic neuropathies.

Optical bistability is realized in GaInAsP/InP coupled-circular resonator microlasers, which are fabricated by planar technology.
