Surgical and Technical Modalities for Hearing Restoration in Ear Malformations.

Malformations of the external and middle ear often go along with an aesthetic and functional handicap. Independent of additional aesthetic procedures, a successful functional hearing restoration leads to a tremendous gain in quality of life for affected patients. The introduction of implantable hearing systems (bone conduction and middle ear devices) offers new therapeutic options in this field. We focus on functional rehabilitation of patients with malformations, either by surgical reconstruction or the use of different implantable hearing devices, depending on the disease itself and the seve

[Margin of error in subjective assessment of visual acuity].

The frequencies for correct answers to individual Landolt-Cs were measured as a function of their size in 183 eyes ("psychometric function", 48 tests per acuity step, computer screen). An integrated Gauss function modified for assessing bias was fit (least squares) to the values of each subject. The mean value of the fitting function is a measure of visual acuity; its standard deviation is a measure of the reliability of the acuity measurements. The standard deviations are subject to a logarithmic normal distribution centered at a width of 1.5 steps. The distribution does not depend on age, se

Functional assessment of older obese patients candidates for bariatric surgery.

CONTEXT: Obesity in the elderly is associated with exacerbation of functional decline (dependency), that occurs with aging, because of decreased muscle mass and strength, and increased joint dysfunction. Consequently, there is progressive loss of independence, autonomy, chronic pain and impaired quality of life. The weight loss can bring benefits in all these aspects, especially when accompanied by exercises. Elderly patients with morbid obesity may be submitted to surgical treatment, taking into account that the massive weight loss, eventually caused by bariatric surgery, may exacerbate the l

Treatment of depression in patients with alcohol or other drug dependence: a meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Depression and substance abuse are common and costly disorders that frequently co-occur, but controversy about effective treatment for patients with both disorders persists. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantify the efficacy of antidepressant medications for treatment of combined depression and substance use disorders. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, MEDLINE, and Cochrane database search (1970-2003), using the keywords antidepressant treatment or treatment depressed in conjunction with each of the following alcohol dependence, benzodiazepine dependence, opiat

Attachment, Mentalization, and Criterion B of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD).

BACKGROUND: The mentalization theory posits that interpersonal difficulties and maladaptive personality traits develop from an insecure attachment pattern with one's caregiver and corresponding deficits in mentalizing-the ability to understand others' and one's own mental states. Mentalizing deficits have been theorized as the basis for all psychopathology, with the paradigmatic case being Borderline Personality Disorder. Nevertheless, developments in the personality field indicate personality pathology is best represented dimensionally, and such a proposal was outlined by the Alternative DSM-

Field-deployable visual detection of Burkholderia gladioli and its toxigenic pathovar using a one-step RPA-CRISPR/Cas13a assay.

Burkholderia gladioli pathovar cocovenenans produces the potent mitochondrial toxin bongkrekic acid (BA), causing severe foodborne outbreaks. Conventional detection methods are constrained by prolonged turnaround times and the need for sophisticated instruments, limiting their utility for on-site surveillance. In this study, two independent one-step RPA-CRISPR/Cas13a detection systems were established: one targeting a species-level marker for broad screening of B. gladioli and the other targeting the bonA gene cluster for specific identification of the toxigenic pathovar. The complete one-step

A Panel of Methylated MicroRNA Biomarkers for Identifying High-Risk Patients With Ulcerative Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Methylation of specific microRNAs (miRNAs) often occurs in an age-dependent manner, as a field defect in some instances, and may be an early event in colitis-associated carcinogenesis. We aimed to determine whether specific mRNA signature patterns (MIR1, MIR9, MIR124, MIR137, MIR34B/C) could be used to identify patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) who are at increased risk for colorectal neoplasia. METHODS: We obtained 387 colorectal tissue specimens collected from 238 patients with UC (152 without neoplasia, 17 with dysplasia, and 69 with UC-associated colorectal cancer [

Nicarbazin-Based Fertility Control for Urban Pigeon Management: A Review of Experimental, Regulatory and Operational Evidence.

High urban pigeon densities can generate conflicts related to building and heritage damage, public-health concerns, nuisance, and the need for socially acceptable population-management strategies. The management of feral pigeon (Columba livia) populations in urban environments requires approaches that are effective, sustainable, publicly acceptable, and legally compliant. Among available non-lethal options, fertility control based on nicarbazin, originally developed in the 1950s as a poultry anticoccidial before being adapted for urban bird management, has become one of the most extensively in

Bayesian multi-state multi-condition modeling of a protein structure based on X-ray crystallography data.

An atomic structure model of a protein can be computed from a diffraction pattern of its crystal. While most crystallographic studies produce a single set of atomic coordinates, the billions of protein molecules in a crystal sample many conformational modes during data collection. As a result, a 'multi-state' model that depicts these conformations could reproduce the X-ray data better than a single conformation, and thus likely be more accurate. Computing such a multi-state model is challenging due to a lower data-to-parameter ratio than that for single-state modeling. To address this challeng

First Human Trial of High-Frequency Irreversible Electroporation Therapy for Prostate Cancer.

Irreversible electroporation, as a nonthermal therapy of prostate cancer, has been used in clinic for several years. The mechanism of irreversible electroporation ablation is thermal independent; thus, the main structures (eg, rectum, urethra, and neurovascular bundle) in prostate are spared during the treatment, which leads to the retention of prostate function. However, various clinical trials have shown that muscle contractions occur during this therapy, which warrants deep muscle anesthesia. Use of high-frequency bipolar pulses has been proposed to reduce muscle contractions during treatme

Network comparison methods detect temporal reorganization of psychophysiological integration invisible to conventional univariate analysis: Proof-of-concept using lunar-phase-timed measurements in elite athletes.

Field studies using conventional univariate methods fail to detect physiological rhythms (melatonin, cortisol, sleep architecture) that are consistently documented under laboratory-controlled conditions, suggesting that temporal factors operate on systemic organization rather than isolated metrics. Network analysis quantifies conditional dependencies among variables simultaneously, enabling the detection of organizational changes independent of mean-level shifts. As an exploratory proof-of-concept, this study examines whether network comparison methods detect temporal reorganization of psychop

Multi-scale feature fusion-based vision mamba for robust plant disease image classification on field-acquired plantdoc data.

INTRODUCTION: Existing convolutional neural networks and Transformers cannot effectively capture fine-grained local lesion features and long-range contextual dependencies simultaneously in field-collected plant images. To address this research limitation, we aim to design an effective lightweight model suitable for plant disease identification in complex field scenarios. METHODS: This work proposes an improved Vision Mamba network for plant disease classification based on the challenging PlantDoc dataset. Three dedicated modules are embedded into the framework, including the Multi-Scale Featu

Elucidating metabolite and pH variations in stroke through guanidino, amine and amide CEST MRI: A comparative multi-field study at 9.4T and 3T.

This study aims to investigate the variations in guanidino (Guan), amine and amide chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) contrasts in ischemic stroke using permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) and transient MCAO (tMCAO) models at high (9.4T) and clinical (3T) MRI fields. CEST contrasts were extracted using the Polynomial and Lorentzian Line-shape Fitting (PLOF) method. Both pMCAO and tMCAO models were utilized to examine the B1-dependence patterns and pH sensitivity of the different CEST contrasts in ischemic lesions compared to contralateral region. At 9.4T, GuanCEST show

Adaptive background noise bias suppression in contrast-free ultrasound microvascular imaging.

Non-invasive, contrast-free imaging of small vessel blood flow is diagnostically invaluable for detection, diagnosis and monitoring of disease. Recent advances in ultrafast imaging and tissue clutter-filtering have considerably improved the sensitivity of power Doppler (PD) imaging in detecting small vessel blood flow. However, suppression of tissue clutter exposes the depth-dependent time-gain compensated noise bias that noticeably degrades the PD image. We hypothesized that background suppression of PD images based on noise bias estimated from the entire clutter-filtered singular value spect

High prevalence of metabolic syndrome features in patients previously treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma.

OBJECTIVE: Patients treated for nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma (NFMA) with suprasellar extension show disturbed sleep characteristics, possibly related to hypothalamic dysfunction. In addition to hypopituitarism, both structural hypothalamic damage and sleep restriction per se are associated with the metabolic syndrome. However, the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in patients with NFMA is not well established. Our objective was to study the prevalence and risk factors for (components of) the metabolic syndrome in patients treated for NFMA. DESIGN: The metabolic syndrome (NCEP-ATP

Field validation and assessment of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detecting chronic wasting disease in mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), and Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni).

Tissue samples (n = 25,050 total) from 23,256 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) collected statewide in Colorado were examined for chronic wasting disease (CWD) using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay developed by Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc. (brELISA), in a 2-phase study. In the validation phase of this study, a total of 4,175 retropharyngeal lymph nodes (RLN) or obex (OB) tissue samples were examined independently by brELISA and immunohistochemistry (IHC). There were 137 IHC-positive samples and 4,038

Age-related emergence of behavioral deficits and amyloid pathology in the J20 mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Transgenic mouse models carrying familial Alzheimer's disease mutations are widely used in preclinical research, yet phenotypic variability across age and sex can complicate experimental design and interpretation. Here, we performed an age-stratified behavioral and pathological phenotyping of the hAPP-J20 mouse model using independent cohorts of female and male mice at 3, 6, and 9 months of age (n=5-21 per group depending on the assay). Animals underwent a battery of cognitive and non-cognitive assays assessing well-being-related behaviors (nesting, splash test), locomotion and exploration (op

Decoupling environmental effects and host population dynamics for anthrax, a classic reservoir-driven disease.

Quantitative models describing environmentally-mediated disease transmission rarely focus on the independent contribution of recruitment and the environment on the force of infection driving outbreaks. In this study we attempt to investigate the interaction between external factors and host's population dynamics in determining the outbreaks of some indirectly transmitted diseases. We first built deterministic and stochastic compartmental models based on anthrax which were parameterized using information from literature and complemented with field observations. Our force of infection function w

Determination of high-spin iron(III)-nitroxyl distances in spin-labeled porphyrins by time-domain EPR.

Continuous wave EPR spectra of the nitroxyl signals for four spin-labeled high-spin (h.s.) Fe(III) porphyrins showed partially resolved splittings at temperatures near 4 K. Axial ligands were fluoride, chloride, or bromide. As temperature was increased to 20 to 30 K the iron-nitroxyl splitting collapsed due to increasing rates of iron relaxation. Electron spin-echo (ESE) spectroscopy showed that above about 6 K collapse of the iron-nitroxyl spin-spin splitting caused a dramatic increase in the nitroxyl phase memory relaxation rates. Electron spin relaxation rates were determined for Fe(tetrato

Early Birds and Night Owls: Distinguishing Profiles of Cannabis Use Habits by Use Times with Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Understanding, predicting, and reducing the harms associated with cannabis use is an important field of study. Timing (i.e., hour of day and day of week) of substance use is an established risk factor of severity of dependence. However, there has been little attention paid to morning use of cannabis and its associations with negative consequences. OBJECTIVES: The goal of the present study was to examine whether distinct classifications of cannabis use habits exist based on timing, and whether these classifications differ on cannabis use indicators, motives for using cannabis, use
