Perceived financial hardship and sleep in an adult population-based cohort: The mediating role of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors.

BACKGROUND: Social inequalities in sleep have been reported, but there is less research on the mechanisms underlying this association. This study investigates the relationship between financial hardship and sleep within the general adult population, focusing on the mediating effects of psychosocial and lifestyle-related factors. METHODS: We used data from the Specchio cohort, a population-based study in Geneva, Switzerland, initiated in December 2020. Perceived financial hardship and sleep outcomes (insomnia, sleep quality, and sleep duration) were assessed by questionnaire in 2020 to 2021. C

Economic hardship, infant respiratory sinus arrhythmia development, and maternal affectionate touch: Resilience in Mexican American families.

Economic hardship confers risk for a multitude of child development outcomes including regulatory development. A wealth of research demonstrates the adverse influence of economic hardship on behavioral regulation, but less clarity exists for physiological levels of regulation. Further, little work has examined how culturally specific parenting practices can promote adaptive physiological development. The present study drew data from 322 low-income, Mexican American mother-infant dyads to examine how economic hardship, parental affectionate touch, and their interactions would relate to changes

Self-reported determinants for subjective financial distress: a qualitative interview study with German cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Patient-reported financial effects of a tumour disease in a universal healthcare setting are a multidimensional phenomenon. Actual and anticipated objective financial burden caused by direct medical and non-medical costs as well as indirect costs such as loss of income can lead to subjective financial distress. To better understand subjective financial distress, the presented study explores self-reported determinants for subjective financial distress in German patients with cancer, aiming to inform a new German-language patient-reported outcome measure for determining the financial

Economic hardships during COVID-19 and maternal mental health: Combining samples with low incomes across three cities.

The COVID-19 pandemic increased maternal depression and anxiety, imperiling both mothers' own wellbeing and that of their children. To date, however, little is known about the extent to which these increases are attributable to economic hardships commonly experienced during the pandemic: income loss, job loss, and loss of health insurance. Few studies have examined the individual impacts of these hardships, and none have lasted beyond the first year of the pandemic. This study harmonizes data from six evaluations of pediatric-based parenting programs for women with young children and low incom

Financial Toxicity in Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Financial toxicity is a growing concern due to its considerable effects on medical adherence, quality of life, and mortality. This study aims to assess the prevalence of financial toxicity in BIA-ALCL patients. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional, survey-based study on women with confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL from December 2019 to March 2023. The primary study outcomes were financial toxicity measured by

Domestic violence survivors' housing stability, safety, and well-being over time: Examining the role of domestic violence housing first, social support, and material hardship.

Intimate partner violence remains a significant public health issue and survivors often need various forms of support to achieve safety. The increased likelihood of experiencing housing instability and homelessness among survivors has led to an uptake in domestic violence agencies implementing housing-based interventions, such as Domestic Violence Housing First (DVHF), to address survivors' needs. The present study expands on prior research supporting the effectiveness of DVHF to examine situational factors that moderate the outcomes associated with this model among 406 survivors seeking servi

Financial strain across 25 years and women's bladder health: a life course perspective.

BACKGROUND: A small number of cross-sectional studies have found that financial insecurity-a social determinant of health-is associated with lower urinary tract symptoms. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine (1) whether women in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adult Study with higher levels of financial strain, assessed at 7 time points across 25 years beginning in 1985-1986, were more likely to report lower urinary tract symptoms and impact after the 2010-2011 financial strain assessment and (2) whether healthcare access and comorbidities mediated potential associations. Socioeconomic Classes among Oldest-Old Women in South Korea: A Latent Class Analysis.

Oldest-old women are known to live at the intersection of multiple socioeconomic disadvantages in South Korean society. This study classified oldest-old Korean women into several socioeconomically homogeneous classes based on various socioeconomic status (SES) risks and compared health characteristics among the identified classes. This cross-sectional study utilized the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey, including data from 11,053 women (≥80 years). Adverse psychosocial working conditions and poor quality of life among financial service employees in Brazil.

OBJECTIVES: Workers in the financial services sector are exposed to great stress at work. This study investigates whether exposure to adverse psychosocial work conditions is independently associated with poor health-related physical and mental quality of life among financial services workers. METHODS: We studied a nationwide representative sample of 2,054 workers of a large Brazilian state bank in 2008. Adverse psychosocial work conditions were investigated by the Effort-reward imbalance (ERI) scale and the Job content questionnaire (JCQ). Health-related quality of life (HRQL) was assessed us

Women, work, and preventive health care: an exploratory study of the efficacy of HMO membership.

This study's purpose is to explore the possibility of competing roles (paid employment and childcare responsibilities) impinging upon women's annual Pap, breast and blood pressure screenings, and whether HMO enrollments further preventive health care for women in different situations. Using data from the National Access to Medical Care Survey of 1982, the sample includes 594 women who are HMO patients, and 2765 women having regular sources of care from providers in other settings. The findings indicate a strong association between women's relative financial responsibilities for their families

Workplace Wellness Programs: Educating Patients and Families About Discrimination Via Disclosure of Genetic Information.

Oncology nurses are advocates for the ethical and legal use of patients' genetic information. However, this information may be used to discriminate against individuals when they share it while participating in workplace wellness programs. Amendments to federal genetic discrimination laws may lead employees to being financially penalized for nondisclosure of their genetic information. This article stresses the importance of nurses being aware of these laws and pushing for policy revision to protect sensitive genetic information.

Social support, financial status, and depression among French healthcare workers one year after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Early studies on factors associated with depressive symptoms among healthcare workers (HCWs) during the COVID-19 pandemic were primarily related to working conditions and exposure to the pandemic.
