Heat stress impacts affective processes and risk-taking behaviour.

The understanding of heat stress on human behaviour is critical due to increasing frequency of extreme heat events. Heat stress has been shown to detrimentally alter affective states and cognition, effects that are particularly critical for individuals exposed to heat conditions such as firefighters, medical personnel, and athletes. Therefore, this study examined how heat stress, exercise, and wearing firefighter protective gear interact to influence affect and decision-making. A sample of 36 healthy young males was assigned to either a passive, combined or heat-stress-free group. Subjective p…

Turning to 'Trusted Others': A Narrative Review of Providing Social Support to First Responders.

First responders, such as paramedics and firefighters, encounter duty-related traumatic exposures, which can lead to post-traumatic stress (PTS). Although social support protects against PTS, we know little about how first responders' families, spouses/partners, friends, and care-partners (i.e., 'trusted others') provide social support. This narrative review explores support behaviors, coping strategies, and resources trusted others use to support first responders. A structured literature search yielded 24 articles. We used House's (1981) conceptual framework to inform our analysis. We identif…

Repeated exposure to eucalyptus wood smoke alters pulmonary gene and metabolic profiles in male Long-Evans rats.

Exposure to wildfire smoke is associated with both acute and chronic cardiopulmonary illnesses, which are of special concern for wildland firefighters who experience repeated exposure to wood smoke. It is necessary to better understand the underlying pathophysiology by which wood smoke exposure increases pulmonary disease burdens in this population. We hypothesize that wood smoke exposure produces pulmonary dysfunction, lung inflammation, and gene expression profiles associated with future pulmonary complications. Male Long-Evans rats were intermittently exposed to smoldering eucalyptus wood s…

Systematic review of impacts of occupational exposure to wildfire smoke on respiratory function, symptoms, measures and diseases.

BACKGROUND: Wildfire smoke contains numerous hazardous air pollutants which pose serious health risks to humans. Despite this, there has been a limited focus on the assessment of the acute physiological and longer-term respiratory effects of wildfire exposure on firefighters and other emergency workers. Therefore, we undertook a systematic review of the evidence about the respiratory impacts of occupational wildfire smoke exposure among wildfire fighters (WFF). METHODS: Eligible studies from Medline, Embase and Scopus databases were included if they described the relationship between wildfire…

Mental health and social support among public safety personnel.

BACKGROUND: Social support may be a protective factor for the mental health of public safety personnel (PSP), who are frequently exposed to potentially psychologically traumatic events and report substantial post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) symptoms. Research examining perceived social support and its association with PTSD and MDD in different PSP categories (e.g. firefighters, paramedics) is limited. AIMS: To examine differences in perceived social support across PSP and determine whether perceived social support is associated with differences in rate…

Anxiety-related psychopathology and chronic pain comorbidity among public safety personnel.

Canadian Public Safety Personnel (PSP; e.g., correctional service officers, dispatchers, firefighters, paramedics, police officers) regularly experience potentially traumatic, painful, and injurious events. Such exposures increase risk for developing mental disorders and chronic pain, which both involve substantial personal and social costs. The interrelationship between mental disorders and chronic pain is well-established, and both can be mutually maintaining; accordingly, understanding the relationship between mental health and chronic pain among PSP is important for improving health care. …

Accessibility of Metro Vancouver fire-fighters following a damaging earthquake: A case study.

This case study focuses on the ability of Metro Vancouver's fire personnel to access their regular workplace and home location immediately following, and in the hours and days after a major earthquake. In the event of such an incident, transportation infrastructure will be disrupted, limiting accessibility in the region. By examining the travel routes required by fire personnel, emergency planning can address any anomalies or identified gaps in service needs. This case study provides information to guide the development of regional policies and coordinated efforts to ensure that available fire

Impact of Wildfires on Cardiovascular Health.

Wildfire smoke (WFS) is a mixture of respirable particulate matter, environmental gases, and other hazardous pollutants that originate from the unplanned burning of arid vegetation during wildfires. The increasing size and frequency of recent wildfires has escalated public and occupational health concerns regarding WFS inhalation, by either individuals living nearby and downstream an active fire or wildland firefighters and other workers that face unavoidable exposure because of their profession. In this review, we first synthesize current evidence from environmental, controlled, and intervent…

Magnesium sulfate for conversion of supraventricular tachycardia refractory to intravenous adenosine.

The use of magnesium sulfate infusion for the management of cardiac dysrhythmia has recently gained popularity. Magnesium sulfate has been advocated for the management of torsade de pointes and other ventricular dysrhythmias. We report the case of a 38-year-old firefighter with atrial tachycardia that was treated unsuccessfully according to Advanced Cardiac Life Support guidelines with IV adenosine. Subsequently, 2 g of magnesium sulfate was administered intravenously over 5 minutes with resulting conversion of the patients' supraventricular tachycardia to normal sinus rhythm, with complete re

Decontamination and Surface Analysis of PFAS-Contaminated Fire Suppression System Pipes: Effects of Cleaning Agents and Temperature.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-containing firefighting foam have been used in stationary fire suppression systems for several decades. However, there is a lack of research on how to decontaminate PFAS-contaminated infrastructure and evaluate treatment efficiency. This study assessed the removal of PFAS from stainless steel pipe surfaces using different cleaning agents (tap water, methanol, and aqueous solutions containing 10 and 20 wt % of butyl carbitol (BC)) at different temperatures (20 °C, 40 °C, and 70 °C). The content of the remaining fluorine (F)-containing compounds on the

Beliefs About Emotion Are Tied to Beliefs About Gender: The Case of Men's Crying in Competitive Sports.

Gender and emotion stereotypes suggest that men do not and should not cry, yet men's crying seems to be particularly prominent in contexts s … riables. In line with predictions, results of Study 1 indicated that participants rated crying male firefighters as more emotionally appropriate, emotionally strong, and as higher in workplace status than crying male nurses, and that these effects were mediated by perceptions of the target's masculinity and femininity. Occupational cooling practices of emergency first responders in the United States: A survey.

Despite extensive documentation directed specifically toward mitigating thermal strain of first responders, we wished to ascertain the degree to which first responders applied cooling strategies, and what opinions are held by the various agencies/departments within the United States. An internet-based survey of first responders was distributed to the International Association of Fire Chiefs, International Association of Fire Firefighters, National Bomb Squad Advisory Board and the USA Interagency Board and their subsequent departments and branches. Individual first responder departments were q…

Man or machine? An experimental study of prehospital emergency amputation.

OBJECTIVE: Prehospital emergency amputation is a rare procedure, which may be necessary to free a time-critical patient from entrapment. This study aimed to evaluate four techniques of cadaveric lower limb prehospital emergency amputation. METHOD: A guillotine amputation of the distal femur was undertaken in fresh frozen self-donated cadavers. A prehospital doctor conducted a surgical amputation with Gigli saw or hacksaw for bone cuts and firefighters carried out the procedure using the reciprocating saw and Holmatro device. The primary outcome measures were time to full amputation and the nu…
