Contrasting the roles of plastisphere and soil in shaping antibiotic resistome under flooding and co-pollution stress.

Plastisphere has emerged as a distinctive ecological niche in soil, yet its roles in shaping antibiotic resistome under environmental disturbances remain poorly understood. In this study, we examined the influence of co-contamination with imidacloprid and copper on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial functional traits within soil and plastisphere microhabitats under flooding conditions. Pollutant exposure at environmentally relevant concentrations promoted ARG and MGE enrichment, with stronger effects as pollutant number increased. Under combined p

Compound flood simulations indicate rising public exposure to sewage-contaminated waters in Waikīkī, Hawai'i.

Waikīkī, Hawai‘i serves as a valuable case study for flood vulnerability due to its low elevation, present-day exposure to multiple flood sources, and role as the state’s economic engine. This study applies the high-resolution, open-source WRF-Hydro-CUFA (Coastal Urban Flood Application) model to simulate compound flood interactions among pluvial, fluvial, coastal, storm drain-driven, and subsurface processes, and to evaluate how flood characteristics in Waikīkī evolve under projected sea-level rise (SLR). Simulated water levels in an estuarine drainage canal, serving as the primary outlet for

Satellite-derived longitudinal evidence of flood effects on community water and sanitation resilience in coastal Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Flooding can disrupt water, sanitation and hygiene services in low-income rural and peri-urban settings, yet there is limited quantitative evidence on how repeated flood exposure affects safe water and sanitation over time at the level of Community Health Units (CHUs), which are the operational units for primary health care in Kenya. METHODS: We analysed repeated CHU-level data from ten Community Health Units in Kilifi County, Kenya, across eleven surveillance rounds from 2017 to 2024. For each round, we calculated the percentage of households with safe drinking water and with acc

A disaster in the disaster: a study on post-traumatic stress symptoms among flood relief workers in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan’s 2025 monsoon floods created extreme humanitarian demands, exposing frontline relief workers to sustained trauma, hazardous conditions, and challenging safety resources. While post-traumatic stress among disaster survivors in Pakistan is documented, little evidence exists regarding responders. This study assessed post-traumatic stress symptoms among flood-relief workers and examined factors associated with elevated Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) scores. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted in September to October 2025 among verified frontline …

Dredging and confinement limit estuarine geomorphological recovery and shape future flood risk in the Firth of Clyde.

Low-lying coastal estuaries support some of the world's most densely populated regions. Such estuaries yet are increasingly constrained by dredging and channel confinement due to human development and river modifications, with uncertain consequences for flood risk and long-term (centuries) geomorphic stability. Using multiyear high-resolution bathymetric surveys combined with well-calibrated flood models of the Clyde Estuary, United Kingdom, we investigate how channel confinement and dredging collectively affect flood propagation and estuarine morphodynamics. Geomorphic changes observed betwee

From simulation to reality: Validation of fast flood modelling using fire station operational data.

Short-duration rainfall events that are increasingly extreme and the resulting pluvial flooding pose a significant threat to urban areas. Robust flood models, therefore, play a crucial role in urban stormwater management. However, the applicability of these models is strongly constrained by the accuracy and reliability of their predictions, making thorough validation essential. At a city level, validation can be difficult due to a lack of data and reference measurements. Consequently, alternative approaches that use real-event observations, such as fire station operational records, photographs

Microfluidic and Molecular Insights into Enhanced Recovery and Asphaltene Deposition Behavior during CO2 Miscible Flooding.

CO2 miscible flooding is an effective enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique. However, its application is constrained by unclear microscopic displacement mechanisms and the risk of asphaltene deposition. Furthermore, conventional macroscopic experiments and microscopic simulation often fail to adequately address the conditions of medium-deep reservoirs. This study employs an integrated approach combining high-pressure, high-temperature microfluidic experiments with molecular simulations. The microfluidic experimental system enables direct visualization of CO2-crude oil interface dynamics and as

Glycine Betaine Mitigates Flooding and Drought Damage in Maize by Regulating Respiration, ROS Homeostasis, and Metabolism.

Flooding (FS) and drought (DS) reduce maize yield and water use efficiency by inducing anaerobic respiration and excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). We tested foliar glycine betaine (GB) in three maize genotypes, GD668 (water-tolerant), ZF505 (water-sensitive), and GD0810 (drought-tolerant), subjected to FS or DS at the V3 stage using a factorial design of genotype × water stress × GB, with measurements at Day 4, Day 8, and after rewatering or drainage. Both stresses inhibited root growth, decreased leaf relative water content (RWC) and water potential (Wp), destabilized instantaneous wat

Flood regime and dam operation jointly determine cyanobacterial dynamics in deep oligotrophic-mesotrophic reservoirs.

Extreme rainfall and flooding are intensifying globally, yet their interaction with reservoir operations on cyanobacterial dynamics remains unclear. This study compares two flood years (2020 and 2024) in Lake Qiandaohu, China, using 2021-2023 as a baseline, to disentangle how rainfall patterns and flood-control operations shape cyanobacteria succession. The 2020 event featured concentrated summer rainfall and rapid high-discharge releases (maxoutflow = 7228 m3/s). Under this regime, the turbid inflow plunged to 20-40 m near the dam, and post-flood cyanobacterial responses were brief and confin

Surrogate-based optimization of land-use-informed LID strategies for enhanced urban flood resilience.

Urban flooding, driven by rapid urbanization and climate change, poses a critical challenge to resilient urban development. Although low-impact development (LID) practices are effective for mitigating flood hazards, identifying optimal LID combinations across heterogeneous land-use settings requires computationally efficient decision-support approaches. This study presents an optimization framework that couples a personal computer storm water management model (PCSWMM)-driven machine learning surrogate model with a genetic algorithm (GA) to identify optimal land-use-specific combinations of LID

Quantitative Retinal Vascular Imaging Using Flood-Illuminated Adaptive Optics in Eyes with Lens Opacities.

Flood-illuminated adaptive optics (AO) imaging enables high-resolution quantification of retinal vascular morphology; however, its repeatability in older adults with lens opacities remains poorly characterized. In this prospective study, 40 subjects (66 eyes) underwent flood AO imaging using the rtx1 system (Imagine Eyes, Orsay, France) at three retinal locations across multiple sessions. Two independent masked graders measured lumen diameter (LD), total diameter (TD), wall cross-sectional area (WCSA), and wall-to-lumen ratio (WLR), with repeatability assessed using intraclass correlation coef

Recommendations for the development of erosion-resistant tidal marshes to enhance nature-based flood risk mitigation.

There is growing interest in nature-based hybrid flood risk mitigation, in which wetland ecosystems, such as tidal marshes, are an integral part. Tidal marshes can attenuate wave loading on defense structures, reduce breach depth in case of defense structure failure, attenuate storm surges, reduce shoreline erosion, and grow vertically with sea-level rise. Marshes are currently being restored and created for flood risk mitigation and/or for other ecosystem services, making it crucial that they can persist in the long term and therefore develop erosion-resistant sediment beds. In this paper, we

Understanding vulnerability to flood-induced disasters: a comprehensive scoping review on at-risk individuals and evacuation challenges.

Flood-induced disasters are increasing in frequency and severity, with high-income countries (HICs) facing growing health, social, and operational challenges, particularly in managing and protecting vulnerable populations that are disproportionately affected. This scoping review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines, examined how vulnerability is defined, addressed, and operationalized in evacuation management during flood-induced disasters in HICs. A systematic search identified 98 peer-reviewed studies published between 2014 and 2025. The analysis revealed critical gaps and inc

Microbial denitrification responses to elevated CO2 in lake-shore sediments under different flooding conditions.

The lake-shore zone is a critical site for recognizing the ecological impacts of global climate change, such as persistent elevated CO2 (eCO2). However, the direct effect of eCO2 on functional microorganisms in lake-shore sediments is neglected or confused at previous studies. In this study, the short-term direct effects of eCO2 on microbial denitrification in lake-shore sediments were investigated by simulating four flooding conditions (non-flooding (NF), intermittent flooding (IF), alternating high and low water-level flooding (HLF), and constant water-level flooding (WF)) through incubation

Differential regulation of the "phytoglobin-nitric oxide respiration" in Medicago truncatula roots and nodules submitted to flooding.

Flooding induces hypoxia in plant tissues, impacting various physiological and biochemical processes. This study investigates the adaptive response of the roots and nitrogen-fixing nodules of Medicago truncatula in symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti under short-term hypoxia caused by flooding. Four-week-old plants were subjected to flooding for 1-4 days. Physiological parameters as well as the expression of the senescence marker gene MtCP6 remained unchanged after 4 days of flooding, indicating no senescence onset. Hypoxia was evident from the first day, as indicated by the upregulation of

Hydrophobic Carbon Nanotube-PTFE Network in Gas Diffusion Electrode for Flooding Resistance in CO2 Electroreduction.

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) represents a promising approach for the sustainable production of value-added chemicals from CO2. However, maintaining long-term operational stability under industrially relevant high current densities remains a major challenge, primarily due to electrolyte flooding and the salt formation including carbonate and bicarbonate species, which severely compromise the performance of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs). In this article, we present an advanced gas diffusion layer (GDL) design incorporating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in
