This unique development is thought to be an adaptive response to their highly abrasive diets that contain phytoliths and sediments that may accelerate dental wear. METHODS: Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration's emergency department and inpatient datasets from 2016 to 2018 were analyzed. In the United States, HIV is rendered a chronic condition, and viral transmission is minimized through strict adherence to pharmaceutical treatment. Postmortem evaluation of a Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) revealed cold stress lesions and previous watercraft trauma that included broken ribs, a diaphragmatic hernia, an enlarged vena cava, and right-sided cardiomegaly. Brevetoxins become part of the marine aerosol as the fragile, unarmored cells are broken up by wave action. Inhalation of the aerosolized toxin results in upper and lower airway irritation. West Nile virus (WNV) exposure has not yet been reported in feral swine (Sus scrofa) despite the broad geographic range and population density of this species. The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of antibodies to WNV in feral pigs, and to evaluate serologic diagnostics as applied to this species. Feral pig serum from three states was evaluated for antibodies to WNV. The overall WNV seroprevalence rate for 222 samples collected in 2001-2004 was 22.5%. On August 23, 2002, the Georgia Division of Public Health (GDPH) and CDC were notified of two cases of unexplained fever and encephalitis in recipients of organ transplants from a common donor. An investigation has identified illness in two other recipients from the same donor: one with encephalopathy and the other with febrile illness. CDC, the Food and Drug Administration, GDPH, and the Florida Department of Health are conducting the investigation. This duster could possibly represent the first recognized transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) by organ donation.
